Friday. Cold front here...froze walking in the unexpected cold wind today. Kind of in a slow mindset today.
So, today, I thought I'd talk snacks. So many of us are on limited budgets. So my snacks have to be cheap. And I have to have my snacks for a number of reasons (no gallbladder related, metformin related, etc.). So, this week I've been really bad on a carb overload. And that is horrible for me, personally, for my health. But cheap carbs either sweet or salt based are so easy...
So I thought I would ask...what are your cheap, easy, quick, healthy go-to snacks? I need some ideas. When I'm in a better situation, I like hummus with pepper strips, beef jerky (but struggling so bad already this week with water/sodium), strawberries, etc. I find myself hopping back and forth over the line I need to be behind for improving my health...
So what are your favorite snacks - and how do you fight the continuing cravings??

I woke up to snow this morning....not my idea of fun. Can't seem to get warm and trying to convince myself that there won't be snow on the mountain-bike trail because of all the trees so I can still go for a ride.
My snacks are always changing. There is the usual fruit and veggies, yogurt, pretzels. I always have sugar free jello made up in individual containers for easy snacking when I want something sweet. The kids have been on a popcorn kick so I have been eating quite a bit of air popped popcorn varying the seasonings I put on it to keep it different. I love hummus as well with fresh vegetables. If I am really hungry and have the calories for it I will munch on a handful of shredded wheat cereal. I also like a piece of light string cheese for a quick protein boost.
Do you guys have Aldi's in Oklahoma? They have a lot of healthier snacks for really good prices.
I don't fight the cravings. If I have a craving for say something sweet I will have something a little sweet before it gets to the maddening level where I am tempted to eat multiple full sized candy bars. I try to make it something a little bit healthy but still tastes good so I feed the craving but don't go overboard. If I try to deny the craving it will only get worse and make me binge.0 -
Snacks, snacks, snacks. I love snacks. Salty, savory snacks. I loooove popcorn so I usually have a bowl of popcorn with 2 tablespoons of butter popped in this baby http://smile.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00005IBXK/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used It uses no oil, but the popcorn turns out crispy like stove popped. I have a variety of seasonings I put on it too. They sell popcorn flavors now, and the calories are negligible, so I can have a nice big bowl with a variety of flavors.
Apples, carrots, celery are my go to afternoon snacks. I also buy Luna and Clif bars on Amazon, if I can get them for less than a dollar a piece. And, I've taken to keeping a box of individually wrapped Cheez-it bags in the house, which has worked really well for portion control for my whole family.
Aldi's is awesome. Most of the food they sell is just alternately labelled big brand foods for a fraction of the cost.
Amazon subscribe and save is also a great source for cheap snacks. There are digital coupons and you save a good percentage on many things. Have you ever checked around? You normally get a set date for delivery, but you can adjust the date to fit your pay schedule, which I frequently have to do.
Oh, and my latest sweet craving has been satisfied by Werther's butterscotch candies. One candy is about 25 calories. As long as I can resist biting them, I can make it last a long time. Just got two enormous bags for $13. They should last a couple of months, even with my kids indulging in them.

I am not supposed to ever have snacks now I have the band. Three meals and that's it. However, I am sure occasionally I will. I love Jack Links Teriyaki Steak, the bites, they are yummy and full of protein.0
