Mini Goals?

Do you guys do this? I find if I concentrate on the small goals the big ones seem to happen
So my next few are:
16-6 for a 40lb loss (currently 16-8)
16-4 for a 3stone loss
16-1 to make my BMI under 40 and technically no longer a member here though you wont get rid of me!
15-13.5 to be under 16
I find there is a goal to hit every 2-5lb or so

I think setting mini goals is one of the reasons I have stuck with this so long this time.
My last goal was to hit 90lbs gone (hit this morning) my next is to be under 200 lbs and after that 100 lbs lost. Most of my goals are between 5 and 10 lbs. As the weight is coming off slower I am going to reevaluate my minigoals since it can take an awful long time to lose 10 lbs.0 -
Firstly, congratulations Wennim on being 90lbs down.
I tend to set big obvious goals. First was 10% -20% body weight loss. Then is was my birthday goal.
Next is 100lbs lost which might be the end of this month (11/24/14)
and then when I hit 200lbs (2/2/15).
After that I will have to set some new ones. So far so good though things seem to be slowing down.0 -
Hit a new one today. I am finely Obese Class I (Moderately obese). Finely, I am moderately something.0

I hit my 40lb target today. That makes me 2lb away from my 3 stone and 5lb away from moving out of being morbidly obese0

I struggle so much with actual goals. Mini or macro, it does matter. So I fool myself by sticking to "getting healthier" and things like that. My sister set me up with a workout plan, but I keep it loose by saying I can do one of that exercise, or as many as I want.... And so I do... But some I struggle with and some I do easily... I don't get it.
But I know if I set hard goals, even sensible ones, I'm still toast. And I cannot set weight goals anymore. Those undermine me. I still haven't made myself sit and do measurements. I can't sit and take another hit right now. Avoidance never helped, but at least if I am not looking at gains, I didn't fail, right?
Some pants are still way loose so I know I'm not gaining back a lot, even though the scale says otherwise...0 -
Hi. I just joined the group last week. :-) My whole eating healthier/dieting started Oct 15th.
My take on goals is a little different this go around on the diet train. Over the summer, June 18th, I quit using smokeless tobacco. It was a rough few months during which time I learned a lot about dealing with cravings and not looking too far ahead. When you are in the middle of a serious craving the goal to be quit for life doesn't help much... but the goal of staying quit for the next three minutes does. I would wake up and promise the guys on the website I used that I would not use nicotine for the next 24 hours. The next morning I would wake up and promise again. I still make that promise every morning.
For this diet/eating healthier I have my plan laid out: non-processed foods, 1600 calories per day, exercise 45 minutes a day. I wake up every morning and promise myself I will follow the plan. That's it. I know if I stick to my promise I will lose weight. Period. If I hadn't joined a group Holiday fitness challenge I probably wouldn't even be weighing myself more than once a month.
I'm taking it one day at a time and one craving at a time (as I stare out my office window at the Hardees 100 ft away lol)... Anyone can diet/eat healthy for 24 hours, the key is to wake up and do it again! :-)
Now that I read over my novel... I guess I do like mini goals, just not that have a hard time line to accomplish them in.

I don't know if I could do a renewed commitment like that every day, Nate, is it? I do renew a commitment daily, but it isn't always conscious. I make the decision every day to love my fiance, no matter our problems, no matter our issues, etc. But that is a different type of thing. I might try this method. Thanks for the idea.0

Goals are a phycological thing so everyone is going to be different. If goals just don't work for you then that fine. As long as you are still continuing to move forward and have some success. I see my goals as number games. I originally set them up to test if the numbers in my spreadsheet were right and then added some more that were at logical points... -100lbs, 200lb weight and so on. that way I don't feel to disappointed if I miss one.0

I do like the idea of setting mini goals. For me it helps keep me motivated and it also helps me see it all in a way that isn't so overwhelming. When I think of the total amount to lose it boggles my mind a bit and makes me think that it might not be possible, but the mini goal of a few pounds is something I can wrap my head around. I also like the idea of daily commitment. I hadn't really thought about that before, but it seems like something that might work for me. Thank you for the idea!0

I think that for me, personally, I will see it as a true sign of personal growth when I can actually set a goal, a real goal, and be able to achieve it. I've progressed in so many other ways I never dreamed possible - so LMBO - my new mini goal is to actually set a goal and not let myself be intimidated by it and to actually achieve it without self-sabotage on the way... Heeheehee...0

Zac, I'm with you. When I look(ed) at the total amount of weight I need(ed) to lose it is very overwhelming. Once upon a time I weighed in at over 500 pounds. The thought of losing 300 pounds......wow, boggles the mind and instantly sets me up for failure. Now grant it I had a huge help in my journey with my gastric bypass. At one point, about 2 years post-op I was down to 250 and thought reaching my goal of 199 was within my reach. But, since I hadn't dealt with my sexual abuse I quickly went back up to 370. This second time has been much harder making small goals very necessary.
Nate, first off welcome to the group. We're glad to have you. This is a great group of people who are here to help you in any way we can. The great thing about this group is that no matter what you're going through, I can pretty much guarantee at least one person, if not more, has been there. Never be afraid to reach out for help. Now, I absolutely love your idea of a daily commitment. You are so right, anyone can do something for 24 hours. It's just stringing those 24 hours together. And a huge congratulations on quitting smokeless tobacco.0 -
As they say “A goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot.”0
