Levels of exercise post-op.

My surgery was 17 days ago. I know it's probably too soon to work out much past just walking, but this is driving me insane. I have a simple home routine of mountain climbers, burpees, different types of planks, crunches, and push-ups... but I just can't handle it yet. It sucks. I'm too weak, and I really, really hate feeling weak. I used to be able to hold a plank for, like.. EVER. Now I don't have the energy for over 12 seconds.
When did you guys start lifting weights again? Or just basic calisthenics?

My team told me to take it easy and not lift anything over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. I could use the treadmill but nothing else. Not even housework and vacuuming. Remember you had a lot of internal work and if you stress it you may not feel it but damage may be done. Take it easy for 6 weeks and then start back to exercise.
Going to fast at the start may be counter productive.0 -
I was told to walk at first and then after six weeks, I was told I could add in swimming, biking, elliptical, etc. as long as I felt good. I used small free weights after the first couple of weeks as long as they were under 20 pounds total too.0

My instructions were nothing strenuous until 4 weeks, but at my 3 week surgeon visit he allowed me anything that didn't hurt. That put me back on the elliptical (but at a lower level than pre-surgery) and weights (about 45% lower weight than pre-surgery), but he told me No Ab work until 8 weeks or so. Even with the lighter weights, I could feel it in my abdomen when I was getting near the hard last few, so i quit as soon as I felt anything in the abdomen area.
Now almost 8 weeks out I am back to my old level for cardio (but fewer minutes as I am not trying to burn calories as much) and weights are almost back to pre-surgery levels.
Get *your* instructions from your doctor, though. Follow his/her plan for you and all will work out in the end. Eventually, you'll be back in the swing of things and these weeks will feel like the blink of an eye.

My surgeon told me nothung over 8 lbs until I was pain free. That doesn't sound right to me considering I had absolutely zero pain on the 3rd day and on so I started lifting things over 8 lbs on the 3rd day. I however was told walking for the first 4 weeks u til they cleared me to do other activities after the 1 month post op check up.0

I was told not to lift anything over 10 pounds but the 4lb walking weight gave a good burn for the the shoulders and arms. Yes, high rep sets, but at least it was useful. Aside from that, walking, walking, walking. At about 4 weeks I attempted a slow jog that my large incision quickly told me it didn't like so I just walked faster lol. At my 6 week post op, the doc told me I could continue with my normal routine as I did before, but remember it could take up to 3 months for the abdominal muscle to completely heal. I know, not everyone was had their abdominal muscle cut, but I did just above and to the right of my navel as I look down at it. That is where the big incision is located. Seriously, if you have ankle weights and such, use them. Go for the burn.0

thanks for the advice, guys. I'll find different, extremely low impact ways to get in some non-cardio, and I guess just try to enjoy walking more. I meet with the doc on monday for the first post-op visit, we'll see what he has to say.0

aside from swimming and walking I didn't do any classes until 6 months. I focused exclusively on my eating addiction and changing my relationship with food. I had a bad history of pigging out after workouts and I didn't want that to recur. My reality is that exercise waxes and wanes with me so I stick to calorie restriction (1350 per day) with more allowed if I managed to exercise now that I am in maintenance.0
