I got out and did 2 miles, this morning. It was a balmy (as Kim and Jen pointed out) 33* with a "Feels Like" of 29*. It's a big stepping stone, for me, as I'm not a morning person, and I was out and back in before the sun came up!
That makes 7 miles for January.
Carol, let me know how you like the dressing! In 30 days, you shouldn't WANT that grape crap. Hopefully that's your outcome. I'm really digging this, so far.
For the Whole 30 folks, how hard is that "No Weighing/measuring" working out? I've been tempted a few times, but have fought back those temptations. I did notice that my belt slipped comfortably into it's "Good Day" notch!0 -
Awesome job TJ. You won't be living that statement down, you do realize. Hehehe....0
-
Haha, you just wait until February when the real cold kicks in, in the (high) 20s.
I just did another mile at lunch. That makes 8 miles for me! Depending on how the evening goes, I might get another in, when I get home. I'm really liking this. Thanks, Jen!!0 -
Oh, and by the way, I'm still a "twenty-something".0
-
TJ, you're quite welcome (you young whipper-snapper you - hehehe). I'm so happy that the challenge is motivating you to get out as well. I'm so waiting for February! Trust me, not much difference in the two months here, just south of the frozen tundra.
I posted this on the FB challlenge page and thought I would post it here.
I'm having a not-so-good day eating. I have stayed away from sweets (really want some today for some reason) and am slamming down water. So there are some positives.
Just needed to air that out.
Have a great rest of your Monday everybody.
I'm still thinking positive about the day. Posting this helps.0 -
Keep your head up and push through! I forgot, are you doing the Whole 30 with us? If not, are you starting something new?0

Still more snow that street out there with more on it's way for Wednesday. I think the treadmill cleaning kit will be here soon so I can try to move that sucker indoors and get some miles in.
Day 5 no sugar no grains, and I feel fine. Had one craving which I ate some raisins to get over. That was the evening of day 3. It's getting easier. A friend of mine is doing plant-based diet with only 200-300 calories from animal protein. He read a book called The China Study which said (among other things) that some animal proteins, mainly casein, has been show to cause cancer in humans. I'll be adding it to my reading list shortly. Anyway, he said, "You know that questionable feeling you get when you're eating something and you don't know if it's contributing to your health or not? But you make a justification/rationalization that it is contributing in some way? Most things I'm putting in my body right now doesn't give me that feeling. I feel pretty solid." I'm hoping I'll feel that way soon. On the right track.0 -
Mark: again, I am so sorry about the loss of your wife. I only mention it because you said that you don't mind talking about it and I think it really puts into perspective what you mean when you say you had a difficult last few months. I know Pam made A lot of your food for you and was a real supporter of your healthy lifestyle way of eating.
No one can replace that but I hope you'll come back here often and look for some support. Between TJ posting recipes, Jen coaxing you out to Jaunt, and just everyone listening and congratulating you on any steps you're taking...I certainly hope that might help.
I think it's fantastic that you've come back here to let everybody know that (like many of us) you're ready to get back to some healthy habits in January. We are here for you and ready to do it with you.
Congratulations on making up your mind before the weight changed. (Wish I could say that.)
Big Hugs!0 -

No TJ, I'm not doing the Whole 30. Not sure what happened today. I think I'm going to start taking nuts to work so I can have a snack. I'm proud of myself though for not going to the vending machine and getting a candy bar.

A frigid Monday with lots of wind - don't want to walk outside. But, I'm on day 5 of my 100-day pushup gong and so far, so good. Heading home, and the pup and I will brave the cold.0
-
Well....it's Monday. ..0

Thanks all.0

Mark, sorry for your loss.
Jen, good job on not hitting the vending machine! I really like macadamia nuts for a quick hunger-beater. You have to be careful, though. They're super fatty and caloric, so you don't want to "just eat a handful" and end up finishing the bag.
Cynthia, what is this "pushup gong" I've seen you mention it twice.0 -

I've been having cashews and almonds (raw and unsalted). You're right, just a few at a time. At least they are good fat.
Food diary closed in a few minutes and my day will be complete. I made it!

The Whole 30 is going great for me. Only four days in and my clothes are already fitting better. I really needed this to get back on track. Love all the support here!0

Had a blast on the podcast! Thanks all!0

Dittos ^^^^ !
Kevin looking forward to hearing about your run and gun. Thinking I might do that in
2016.
Kim - Did the BCAA yesterday and Doms much reduced today. Taking another dose tonight 7g see how I feel tomorrow. (Tuesday is usually when they hit me hard). Ordered some Taurine saw some research on Suppversity that indicates it may help even more and help with Body Comp as well. Will Keep you advised.
Heron and Arturo U still B Jammin'!
Carol as always a great time much thanks for all you do for us. In it to win it!0 -
Good morning everybody. Yes it's 2:00am and I'm awake. I slept about 3 hours and have been trying to get more for the past 2 hours. I give up. Found the podcast from last night and started listening to it. What an awesome group!!!
Looks like it snowed last night. Maybe a couple inches total.
That's it for now. Happy Tuesday!0 -
Happy Tuesday Folks!
Hope you're back to sleep Jen. Hate it when that happens.
Chris: I'd be interested to hear your take on the China Study, it's often cited in the paleo shpere as flawed science. The criticism stems from the study drawing risk factor conclusions from epidemiological studies that don't have controls that say clinical trials would have.
I've got two books I'm reading at the moment, The Perfect Health Diet, and the Lean Muscle Diet. haven't read enough to draw any conclusions or sum either up yet.
Well Cold is moving in, low 30's this morning and in to the teens in the coming days. Still will be closer to normal probably by this time next week. So feel for ya all up North or out West that have to deal with it longer. So for me it may change how I do, or how long I do, but it will not change what I do. Time to Jaunt...0 -

That is great news! Looking forward to progress with my clothes. I feel pretty good...that's progress.
Thanks John, Kim, Kevin, Heron & Arturo for doing the show. It will post as a podcast next week. It was a blast to talk to you guys! Congrats on December & thanks to everyone contributing here!!

Susan - great news in the Whole30 and clothes fitting better!
John- I still haven't gotten any BCAAs. DOMS has mostly gone away post workout, but still thinking about adding them. I'm taking Kiefers T3 fuel which I think has taurine. (Need to double check that).
Chris - I suggest you also read Denise Mingers work about the China Study , essentially showing why it is very flawed. Her book"Death by Food Pyramid" is quite eye opening also.
Podcast was fun last night, even if you guys did keep me up well past my bedtime!! Great chatting with all of you!
Off to Denver this afternoon. A couple days of work, and a couple days of snow fun.0 -
TJ a "gong" is a 100-day commitment to do something. In my case, I've committed to a minimum of 10 pushups per day every day for 100 days. If I miss a day, I start back at day 1. The idea is that it is a process commitment rather than an outcome goal (I will be able to do 60 pushups in a row by Sept 1 kind of thing). I set the small number so I never am "too busy" to do it - takes less than a minute since I can do 10 in a row. If I set 30 per day I need to split it up so now it is a bigger commitment and I am more likely to find a reason to skip it. I usually do more than 10, but don't have to. My goal is to improve my pushups - get my arms closer to my sides, get my chest lower to the floor, etc. I'm also hoping I can do more than 20 in a row by the time I'm done. They talk about gongs on The Health Bridge podcast if you want a better explanation.
Today is day 6, and I'm still on track! I leave soon for a 10-day cruise, and this is something I know I can do while on vacation.0 -
Dang! It's cold here. 10 degrees and snowing. The walk to work will be less than wonderful today.0

Welcome Jennifer! Yes, this is a great group and Carol and JT are fantastic podcast hosts. We all keep it real! Glad you're here.0 -
Good morning #2
John, I did get some more sleep in which I'm glad I did. Took the day off, so I'm going to do some stuff around the house.
Cynthia, thank you for the welcome. I am loving this group. So much motivation. The there are some troublemakers though that I have to keep my eyes on (Kim, Kris, DebSue). Hehehe...0 -
Oh, I see... No one wants to call John out for calling low 30s "cold"!
Cynthia, that sounds like a good goal. I'm going to start the same goal! Thanks for giving me the idea.
I'm going to start my on chart for Jen's Jaunt, so I can keep up with it a little better.
Jan 1 - 1mi (outside)
Jan 2 - 2mi (outside)
Jan 3 - 2mi (ouside)
Jan 4 -
Jan 5 - 3mi (2 outside, 1 inside)
Total: 8 miles0 -
Morning all, whipped up a goulash last night. Ground beef various vegetables in a big pot. Tasty, at least healthier than most things and will last for several meals ( the best part ).

Today lifting weights and back to work today.0

Totally missed John cold reference, TJ...tho I do agree that teens is getting very cold. Temps in the 20/30s don't really bother me, teens and single digits start making it difficult. Below zero Fahrenheit, I really can't dress warm enough.
That said, today's jaunt may just be of the airport pacing variety. Not due to cold, but my schedule...just no time for an outside walk. Usually I get a good 30-45 minutes of dedicated walking in the airport before my plane...my no sitting rule. Hmmm, wonder if phone or fitbit gps can track in airport, would love to know how far I walk.0
