Jawbone calorie deficit changing

Hi. I recently bought a jawbone up24 which I think is great. I have it synced with MFP which is also great but the calorie deficit the jawbone sets is confusing me. I can't understand how it chooses how much deficit you should be in. It doesn't appear to have any connection to a weight loss goal. For instance yesterday in the morning it wanted a 400 calorie deficit and by the afternoon it had a 280 calorie deficit set.

Can anyone help me out and explain it to me!?

Hi. I am a little uncertain about your question. When you say "it wanted a 400 calorie deficit..." are you looking at the Up app or MFP?
Did you set up your MFP and Up apps per the instructions given in other posts in this forum?
The Up app establishes a calorie deficit based on your current weight vs goal weight. Mine is consistent at -472 calories a day.
MFP gives me 1560 calories per day, but the Up deducts a further -147 calories until I get active in the day. If you're seeing changes in your calorie goal for the day in MFP, they are based on earning back the negative calorie adjustment through movement (steps or exercise).

Sorry I wasn't clear. I have been using MFP For a while and work on a 500 calorie deficit based on my Tdee (sedentary) and adding 'earned' exercise calories. As you record food you've eaten or add exercise it gives you a calories remaining number to meet your target.

Jawbone technically works in the same way in that it gives you an estimated burn based on how many calories it expects you'll expend and then records your calories consumed and gives you a calories left amount. However the deficit it used to reach your calories remaining amount appears to change on a daily basis but also throughout the day.....

There doesn't appear to be any way to set a manual/ consistent deficit. Unless it's just me?
  • I am curious about this also. For instance, I logged an exercise in the UP app which showed I burned 478 calories (consistent with the HRM I'm testing), but then I go over to MFP and it shows I've only earned 220 calories of exercise. I think part of the reason it changes throughout the day is due to overall # steps taken. I find that when I workout later in the day I don't have the changing problem with the earned exercise calories. Its almost as if there is some algorithm that projects calories burned based on how active you've been so far that day.

I'm not sure how the transfer of calories from UP to MFP works. I have been logging my food in MFP and that transfers over really well to UP then I log all my exercise in UP and the data in the above page to work out how many calories I have left etc. however the number I have highlighted varies I.e the deficit UP is setting for me. I can find no reason for why it would change and can find no manual override. Of course I can do some maths to work out a different deficit if I wanted to eat 500 less than my burn for instance. But it's a little frustrating!

I know this is a really old post, but I just got the Up3, and I'm having the same issue. It's telling me to eat 194 calories less than I burn to meet my goal. So for instance, I'm set at 1250 per day in MFP. Before I move in the morning, Up will say I have 1250 left to eat. But like right now, I've eaten all my food in MFP, and all that xferred over, Up says I have 554 cals more to go. How come it won't let me set my own deficit? Who is taking 52 weeks to lose 9 pounds?
