"crossfit like" workouts

I had a conversation tonight while out for dinner and another girl at the table has done crossfit in the past and loved it. We were talking about lifting weights and a third girl said, "Oh I do weights, I go to pump class. I started at 1 kilo". I very calmly said I lift a bit more than one kilo. Now I do not judge anyone, want to crossfit go for it, want to do pump class, do it, want to sit on your *kitten* all day, do it. But WHY WHY WHY do people all seem to think they practically do crossfit.

I have people say all the time to me, "Oh I don't do crossfit but I do crossfit exercises". I truly do not understand this. Since when have squats, pull ups, handstands, deadllifts, etc been "crossfit exercises"?????

I don't like to argue with people and I don't but is my thinking really out when I think these people have no idea and that crossfit is not the exercises we do but the way it is structured and the focus on all the different areas? Maybe I don't understand crossfit and it is me that is wrong.

I suppose until you have done crossfit you cant really understand it, so people just make assumptions from what they see in photos or whatever.

Does any one else ever have these conversations? Am I wrong or being mean thinking these things?

Sorry, just having a whinge.

Here is the thing... I’ve lifted weights my whole life, I’ve done pushups and pull-ups, I’ve done step aerobics and this skating thing (actually, crossfit should do that to get more lateral movements, but I digress). Crossfit is the merging of multiple disciplines, so in effect, everyone has done something that is in crossfit (even if it is an air squat to pick up the newspaper).

I get your frustration, but rather than hold that stance, I prefer to turn it around and say something like, “That’s awesome. You should come down to my box and train with us.” Then watch their face and see the conversation trail off to something else.

But really, you do crossfit for yourself. Don’t let other people’s opinion of what you know is good for you bother you. Cortisol is not your friend when it is induced by what people say.

I know exactly what you're talking about! I have several friends who do the TRX type of classes and love to tell me they do CF. I ask what kind of weights are involved and they smartly tell me that they use kettlebells and do body weight squats. I want to scream at them! Mind you, I've seen some of the videos they post on FB of them "working hard" and what they're doing, I could do an 8 hour AMRAP of! I commented one time that their squat was not a squat and their trainer took my head off. Whatever.

Agree with AllanMisner. Getting worked up about this doesn't feel worth it to me.

CrossFit is just branding. Any clued up coach can copy the programming and with the right facilities do something almost identical. The difference is only in the affiliation to a corporate brand & obsession with Reebok.

My daughter is a L1 Crossfit coach. While she coaches at a box close to her school, she’s also the lead trainer and programs for the university fitness center. They run a class called Amped, which uses the crossfit approach and equipment. So, it is actually crossfit-like, only because the university isn’t going to pay for a license to offer a class to students and faculty.

But like I said, invite them to your box. They should fit right in.

This guy puts up billboards near me. It is Crossfit in all but name, I can tell from the equipment I can see through the windows.

Thanks all. I don't get worked up about it, I just get amazed. I hadn't thought about the not paying the affiliate costs angle - good thought!

Thanks for the thoughts : )

I don't know if you watch The Biggest Loser or Chris Powell's weight loss show, but Chris and Bob Harper are Crossfit fanatics and if you observe how they work out their clients it is CF 100% of the time....but CF is NEVER mentioned so they don't have to pay a licensing fee. You see plenty of free advertising for the gear (Rogue wall balls, boxes, etc) but never the official CF logo.
