Kim - Very interesting, would guess my High Endurance Aerobic Base built during my Army Time is still paying off even though my training is reduced significantly. BTW I use the Polar H7 Strap, it was recommended for sweet beat but never worked on that one (very disappointed) so tried it with Elite and it worked.

Hey all! Boy have I missed this group. Sorry for the absence. I have been working long hours at work. Haven't been feeling well because of it. Over the last two weeks some things that I had struggled with over the last five years all seem to have surfaced at the same time. The doc says they may all be linked. A part of me just thinks, or wants to think, that it is simply fatigue, but I am going to have a CT scan and a strange tilt test. Joy! More money to docs. For now I am concentrating on eating a clean diet. Holding steady with the weight. I will catch up with y'all later. Off to work!

I did manage to make my 30 miles for the month and am still Diet Coke free thanks to you guys:)

Thank you everybody for your feedback on Fitbit. :D

Jen, you should totally try cross country skiing. Its not like downhill skiing at all. Its fun and easy on the knees. Age should never be a reason not to try new things ;) At my skiing class was a woman about my age and her dad learning how to ski. Sure there were times when they are wobbly but in the end they both had fun.

If I get a chance to go again I'm going to try skijoring.

Kim, that is so cool that you are close to a trail. Try it, its fun and yes its a workout but it doesn't feel like one. Plus it makes traveling over snow so much easier and faster.

I had a NSV. (kinda) All of my winter gear including the tight ones are now loose. Which is yay for me but boo for my pocket. I can still manage with what I have now but next season I will definitely have to buy smaller stuff. Good winter gear are just very expensive. But I have to admit they are worth the price. I am very rough with my clothes and they are all still in great shape.

Kris, its nice to hear from you and I'm sorry that you are not feeling well. I hope your prognosis will be good.
  • Kris, I do hope everything is ok and it is just fatigue. You have to not let work get to you. We all know how stress can impact our health. Congratulations on reaching 30 miles AND staying Diet Coke free. I'm very proud of you, my fellow jaunter. :)

Heron, I'll have to find someone to teach this old girl new tricks. :) Heck, probably have to go to Kim country to do any skiing. We just have corn and soybean fields here.

Been VERY busy this week at work, no time for much other than work....

What is yall's opinion on proteins in general? What I mean is do you see a difference in how your body reacts to fish, chicken, beef or pork? Just curious what everyone's experiences are, I much prefer to eat deer or fish and get my fats from butter and other things I eat. Seems like if I eat very much pork or beef it sort of stalls me out on my weight loss.

Kevin, interesting... I see a family experiment coming up lol.
By the way I was listening to my morning radio show and it appears that the new food trends in New York and probably soon to SF is bone broth. Huh..

  • Good morning everybody.

    It's Wednesday. That is all....

    Oops, not yet.

Kevin, I have reduced my meat intake quite a bit (yes, still have some bacon for breakfast at work). I stick to fish now. Interesting about how meat is affecting your weight loss.

Kris, I'd been thinking about you last couple of days, wondering what was up. Get well soon. Take care of yourself. I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, but sleep and stress mgmt are vital to health and so so hard to do when work and life pushes us hard in a million ways. Prioritize rest and sleep over everything else right now, let your body recover.

Jen. C'Mon...too old. I started mountain biking at 50. Took up downhill skiing after a 30 year break at 51. Scuba same year. I still need to tackle cross country skiing. Not too old. Not enough snow could be a valid reason......

Heron, hear you in the expense of winter warm! My NSV. Had a pair of ski pants I'd bought in sale 3 years ago that id never worn ( Neptune them I guess as inspiration and they were quite a deal). Were a bit too small, I'm wearing them now. Yay me!

Kevin, I have no difference between the types. I stall, feel like crap if I don't eat enough meat - animal protein, could be beef, pork, fish etc. But type doesn't affect. I have taste preferences but not health affect.

But as AJ pointed out in my monthly check in, I do have weight loss affects of calories (and potentially processed food). She wants me to try harder to stay at 1700, than inching up closer to 1900. And stop my liquid (fat laden coffee) only breakfasts. Thinks fat only no protein in am leads to muscle breakdown and serotonin production (or lack of). Otherwise she's happy with my progress, despite last week's tick up.

Oh and if I get calories on line, I can add a HIIT session in the 1-3 days after CarbNite.

Happy Wednesday Folks! Been a high speed sort of morning for me, been a very busy Fitbit sort o Bee. Keep up if you can.

Kris good to hear from you. Hang in there kiddo.

Jen - I'm with Kim on the too old stuff, don't even begin to go down that trail. Nothing you can't do.

Kim - Earn the HIIT! Rock it lass!

Kevin I don't find a difference in protein source either. Just taste preference. (not a big fan of Fish)

Rollin in to day 12 of TF. Still fightin with the dragon, but still standing no tobacco, no substitutes, haven't hurt anybody yet, but feel a mental health day coming.
  • Thanks Kim & John. I'm hoping to get some good long hikes done this year, so that will be my challenge. Well that and some race thing in October. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Kim you rock! Way to try new things and yay for smaller pants! Speaking of snow pants I buy men's pants because they have more pockets. And interesting hypothesis about the fat coffee.

John. Hang in there! I smoked for 15 years and quit 6 years ago. Non smoking Life is so much better!

I am at a weight loss funk right now. Granted I haven't been following the protocol as strict. Last Sunday was my first carb Nite after a good induction. But I overdo my carb nite AND I had some carbs the next day so starting all over again. Argggg!! I have yet mastered the ULC on vacation. It's almost Febuary and I'm still carrying that 7lb I gained from the holidays.

Full on fasted today. Not on purpose, but I got busy and didn't take a lunch.

Today's workout was supposed to be 7:00 on and 4:00 off. I thought that was boring so instead I did 5 rounds of 11:00 minutes. Run 1 mile within 11:00 minutes and use the rest of the time as a rest. At the 11:00 minute mark restart the timer and repeat. My times were:

    6:38
    7:25
    7:36
    7:46
    8:23

I got a stitch in the 3rd lap of the last mile. It was a brutal finish...

    Heron, I will try that!

    THAT WEBSITE HAS SO MUCH!

I just sort of glanced through it, and I can't wait to delve in (after I eat...). I've been taking a thick rubber band and using my five fingers to stretch out and do isometric holds and just kind of work it out. If nothing else it's a great fidgety thing I can do while in meetings and at my desk. Also a racquetball I squeeze to get a forearm pump.

Chris and Heron, I love all the rock climbing and the ski picture! What fun! You are scared of heights Chris??? That IS a fun fact considering your Tough Mudder and other adventures. Well, just keep on jammin!

Kim - analytical?? you?? No! Just kidding - I aspire to have a fraction of your data on strength, HRV, macros...all of it! Keep being inspiring.

Kevin - I'm with Heron: trying new meals is a great idea. Need to get some variety on my plate.

Jen... who are you kidding? You belonged here all along. You just finally found your way home. ;)

Also Heron: One more way for me to obsess about fitness. Love the fitbit and the social aspect around it. Just fun. :)
  • Thursday morning (well, MY Friday morning - hehehe). Last day of week 4 of the FB challenge. I feel like it's been a good week for me. Lost out on some points because of not exercising and also having 'fast food' (I consider one of my lunches this week to be 'fast food'. No big deal, not doing the challenge to win anyway. Just get to have another group of people to provide motivation and accountability.

I've been Fitbitting (is that a word - hehehe) like crazy, but nothing like John. Does he even sleep or just walk all night? Hehehe... Go John! Tomorrow is the last day of the January Jaunt (since it was 30 miles in 30 days, although you can count the 31st if you want). I'll hit my 45 mile goal for the month, which makes me SUPER happy. I'm not including my Fitbit steps/miles in as I have no idea how accurate those are and I'm walking at a much slower pace (so it's not really exercise to me).

Not sure if I mentioned it here or not but I'm throwing out another challenge. This one is easier than January's. February is 4 weeks long so I though I would suggest trying one new thing each week that pertains to your weight loss. It's that easy! It can be a new food, recipe or exercise, do a blog or vlog, etc. It can also be something that maybe you haven't done for a long time (one of my 'new' things will be to start back doing Pilates, after about 2 years away, so it will be like new to me). I haven't thought up a catchy name for the challenge though. Any ideas?

Well Happy Thursday Folks! Not a lot of news going on here though Still TF can't say it's any easier yet. But mind has been made up (at least one side of it) that not going back; so the other side is using all its tools but failing to change the mind of the other side. Not sure that makes any sense but seems brutally clear to me. Change is hard, but things worth doing usually are. so pay the dues.

Chris - Great run session. Like your methodology.

Heron - No worries, You got the tools and you are a master craftswoman, take joy in the new shape you create.

Jen - Yep just a little stroll through Vegas in October, should be EZ PZ by then.

Carol - The Fitbit Challenge for this week is a real opportunity to excel, that was a good idea.

Have Fun everybody a great day awaits.

Finally going home tonight, while I love my team this being stuck in a meeting room all day is getting old. Productive days, some great networking dinners but long and sedentary. I did make them walk to lunch each day, beautiful weather in Dallas and there's a great entertainment shopping area a half mile or so from office. Ate on patio both days so a change from Wisconsin. And yeah those pitiful step counts include a mile walk at lunch. Pitiful.

Heron, that stew looks great. I make a weird chicken dish in the crockpot with peanut butter (12 - 1 cup) and a can of diced tomatoes with jalapeno (or salsa). It tastes great but no one believes me.

Yesterday was my family birthday celebration, a few weeks late, and I fell for chips and three chocolate chip cookies. Not a good thing. Better eating today. The pants that were lose in November aren't falling down anymore! Oh, winter!!!

But, the pushup gong is going full steam ahead, and mine have definitely gotten better in terms of form. Feet together, arms in tight, chest getting lower to the ground. That is what I wanted!

John what is TF? I missed something and can't find it looking back.

Happy Friday Folks! Hope all is well with all of you. My squat rack is supposed to get delivered today, so this week heavy lift will be putting it together and getting my home gym sorted out. Have to work Sunday so will see bout a lift session before in the AM, but don't have all the weights I need to lift 'Heavy' . But may just deload a week early. See how it goes.

Cynthia - Good job on the pushups!

    Kevin - Hey.

Kim - Sometimes be happy with what you can do. You've still gone farther and faster than most.

All righty then, Don't forget Operation RED TOP and Have a Funtastic kinda Day.
  • FRIDAY!!!!!! Errands with mom this morning (some good walking) and the last jaunt of the month (need to get those last 4 miles in) are on the schedule for today. Tomorrow I"m heading up to the Chicago area for a weapons retention class and some range time with a friend of mine (who is also taking the class) after. I'll have cameras in tow, so there might be some video showing me getting disarmed in numerous ways. The whole purpose is to learn, so I'm looking forward to it.

Did my weigh in for the FB challenge and Jen is one happy girl!!!! I didn't do very well on the points side but that's ok. I just missed two of the bonuses. This week will be better. :)

    Have a great day everyone.

TGIF! Good to be home, got in late, so yawning this morning ( and fitbit says I got 6hours 18mins of actual sleep, seriously how can getting a mere 6 hours of sleep be worthy of points, not nearly enough). Anywho.....

Scale back down, but just below where I was two weeks ago. However scale BF took a decent drop which is unusual, lowest of that number I've seen so I'll take it. Points were good on challenge. Glad I worked yoga back into rotation...tho wonder how regular it would be. There was no strength training well I was gone. Time swap, and I'll always prioritize strength and slow walks over other things, esp as I do 15 min of regular morning mobility work.

    Great job Jen!

Good morning everyone! Happy Friday. I submitted a paper yesterday to a conference - it is a "big deal" conference, so cross your fingers. That is surely a burden lifted to have it in, so I can be a little less focused sitting at my desk for a few days. Less sitting, more motion!

I did a basal metabolic rate calculation yesterday, just to see if I can figure out why weight loss is so hard. My BMR came in at 1266 calories per day! That is so very low, dang it! If you buy into the calories in/out calcs that explains why 1200 calories per day doesn't really budge the scale. I'm pretty active in terms of walking and lifting, and when the weather warms up and I can run safely, I'll hit the streets. In the meantime, I'm wondering if the HFLC is right for me. Would I be better off with a more slow carb approach and eating some fruit as a snack. Thinking, thinking...

The reality is that a peanut butter cup isn't good no matter what else I do. ;)

Friday is here! Stressed out a few days this week and ate too much. Still Paleo, just too much of it. Weight was up 3 pounds this morning.. probably the 1/2 pound of bacon yesterday LOL!! Being stressed I did not do my hikes, which is like a double bad thing to do. Feeling much better today. Perhaps I should dance around the house more?

John, contgrats on the TF days. Something that I need to do since I started up again a few months ago...

Jen.. jealous!! Waiting for pictures and video. I did start my dry fire pistol routines this week, and yes, that can be a workout!

As for trying one new thing each week, I am already doing a new meal each week so I will have to find something else, and quick. Hmmmm

    Have a great weekend everyone!!!!!

Kim, congrats on your loss. When are you doing the DEXA again?

Jen, woop woop on your loss!

John, yay for squat racks! Home gyms are great.

Cynthia, your BMR is 1266 but that's if you are just lying in bed and not doing anything. BMR calculators can be iffy. Did the one you use ask for your bodyfat? If you are interested in the HFLC here's a calculator that is pretty good. http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ I am a believer in Carb Nite. I have been the leanest I've been in years. Its not just the scale, its how I look and feel. And peanut butter cups can be a good thing on Carb nites ;)

Mark, yeah too much protein can have the same effect as too much carbs.. Plus you are stressed, so all that have an effect on your body. But we are know that this is not real gain and its just temporarily right? ;)
LOL yes you should dance around the house more and feel free to post a video of that as well ;):p
Nooooo put that cigarette down! Don't be "cigarette's *kitten*" Its hard I know but fight it! Fight the craving and tell yourself "this too shall pass"

Here's a recipe that is really easy and yummy. If you can't find lemongrass that's fine you can either do without or use lemon zest or lemon balm. I like to put in on a bed of spinach while its piping hot. Or wrap it with a cabbage or lettuce leaf. I always just pour the whole can of coconut milk in. No big deal, you'll just end up with more yummy sauce

Slow Cooker Paleo/Keto Coconut Lemongrass Pulled Pork

    Author: Cookie
    Recipe type: Entree
    Cuisine: Asian
    Prep time: 10 mins
    Cook time: 8 hours
Total time: 8 hours 10 mins
    Serves: 6-8

    Ingredients

2-3 lb Pork Loin or Butt Roast
    2 inch ginger
    2-3 cloves garlic
    2 tsp kosher salt
    3 TB olive oil
    3 TB minced lemongrass
    1 TB apple cider vinegar
    1 tsp ground pepper
    1 onion
    ½ can coconut milk

    Instructions

Trim the excess fat from the roast, leaving just a little bit, and slice a crisscross patter into that top fatty layer of the pork. Helps with rendering the fat.
Mince the garlic, peel and slice the ginger into ¼ inch thick rounds, peel & slice the onion into ¼ inch rounds
Place the onion rounds on the bottom of the slow cooker
In a small bowl, combine olive oil, salt, minced garlic, minced lemongrass, apple cider vinegar, ground pepper until it forms a loose paste.
Rub mixture all over the pork butt and place it in the slow cooker
    Cover and marinate over night
In the morning, place the slow cooker in the pot, add ½ can of coconut milk and cook on low for 8 hours.
Pork should be falling apart when it is done. Shred with 2 forks and serve!

I'm still not back to my pre holiday weight But..... I lost inches. yipee! Lost an inch on my hips, 0.25 on my arms and an inch off my thigh, plus 0.5 inch off my chest, which is the one part I don't want to lose lol. My waist is holding on to the inches for dear life so no loss. Overall I'm happy with my measurements 38-31-39 but I want to be smaller lol
So it seems that I'm still making progress, its just not showing on the scale. Does anybody else track measurements?
