Tips on staying hydrated.

How do I consume 8 cups of water a day?

Tip 1: Still and sparkling water both hydrate you, so vary the type of water, to make things interesting.

Tip 2: Carry a bottle of water with you at all times.

Tip 3: There are a number of sports bottle designs: SIS bottles get 5* reviews and are cheap. The insulated Camelbak Podium Chill is the rolls-royce of bottles, but worth it if you want your water chilled.

Tip 4: Keep a 2 litre bottle of still/sparkling water in the fridge and frozen slices of lime/lemon in the freezer to add a zing.

Tip 5: When you go to pub order a glass of still/sparkling water "out of the tap" add ice lime/lemon and you have a refreshing drink for 50p, in the pubs I go to.

If you have any other tips, please continue the string.

When I am at work, I always try to get a glass of water at the same time as making a cup of tea. Normally drink it whilst I wait for the kettle to boil, and leave my glass there as a reminder!

Great stuff. It is the constant reminder to hydrate, which is so important.

I have still water at the gym and try and have a couple of glasses during the day at my desk at work, in meetings I'll have the sparkling (if provided) and in the evenings I like sparkling with a slice of fresh lemon.... I try to make it feel a bit different so I don't get bored with it!

My 94 year old mother drinks a glass of hot water first thing in the morning and last thing at night. She can walk nearly as fast as me, and I'm a gym bunny! Must be something in hot hydration that is beneficial. Can someone explain why?

I like flavoured water but rarely buy so hope roobois tea, coffee and sugar-free fruit squash drinks count towards my daily water consumption; I drink lots of roobois tea in particular - only have plain water while exercising at home.

I used to drink loads of sugar free squash, but was advised by my dietician, that the chemical sweetners were more harmful than sugar. Sure enough, I started to feel below par, and when I cut out the squash I returned to rude health.

    I drink when I'm thirsty.
8 cups of (of fluid, not just water) a day isn't based on any science and would be far too little for me most days.

There's a huge variation on personal needs even in the same conditions and carrying out the same activities (my cycling buddy drinks a quarter of what I need on a long ride together for example). There is no set number or formula that is universal.

If people don't trust their thirst signals and actually have some signs of dehydration then you are better off monitoring the colour and frequency of urination rather than intake.

You are on the button. I worked as a surveyor in the Sahara and we each carried 2 x 5 gallon water coolers in our 4 wheel drives. We also had to take salt tablets regularly. Still less salt than is in some processed foods.
