sick feeling when needing to eat

I'm only 2wks post opp, and despite taking an acid reducer (Prilosec) I get a sick stomach feeling every 3-4 hours if I haven't eaten. It's not so much a hunger, as it is an empty sick feeling that goes away when I eat. Anyone had this? Does it go away? I started taking the acid reducer because my dr said it might help, but it hasn't.

Call your Doc's office back and see what they have to say. They may need to up your dose, or check into something else.

I will do that. I see my surgeon on Tuesday, I'll mention it. Thank you!

I was told right at the beginning that a sleeved tummy is not happy completely empty. Sounds like that's what is happening with you. I don't have this issue, but I never pushed it. In the beginning I ate on a schedule, not because I was hungry. Really, I still do most of the time.

That makes sense. I think I'll need to do that. Set a timer and remind myself to eat before I start feeling sick. I'll bring it up to my Dr tomorrow and see what he says. Thank you for sharing

    This was me before surgery.
If Id get close to or get past a certain time Id feel very nauseous.
Sometimes Id have dry heaves because there was nothing in there to come out, those were times when I was past the point of no return.
If I could catch it before that came over me then it was just a sickly feeling that food would take care of.
I know, its no fun

My Dr had me eating 5 times a day, and don't worry about calories for the first 3 months. What I was told is water is my first priority and until I could meet the 48 - 64 oz a day. Then when I was getting enough water, my new goal was getting enough protein. My surgery was in July and I still have to make sure I get enough protein with a 1000 calorie diet.

So until lately I was drinking or eating all the time.

  • So my doctor said he doesn't know what's causing the sick stomach and to stop taking the prilosec because it isn't working. He said there's nothing else he can do for me and gave me no information on why it's happening or what I should do to help. He is skilled and did a good job on the surgery but his support post op has been less than stellar. They also found that I have a stomach bacteria called h-pylori for which I'm taking 16pills a day for 14 days but didn't really explain anything about what that even is. I had to go back in to the dr's office after my appointment to ask him about it because he never even mentioned it in the appointment (I'd only gotten a call from a nurse at 4 days post opp telling me I had it and they had called in meds but didn't explain what it was....then cone to find out they prescribed meds I'm allergic to, despite me telling them my allergies). I asked him if they bacteria could be causing the sick stomach and he said hmmmmm...could be, I don't know. Then he walked off. So frustrated right now.

That's exactly how I feel, but it even walked me up out of a dead sleep dry heaving.

h-pylori is a bacteria that causes stomach ulcers. I'm surprised he didn't start by suggesting a wait-and-see approach to how you respond to the medicine for that.

Really sorry to hear how they have fallen apart on the post-op care. I'm lucky to be in a stellar program that has had great support throughout the entire process.

  • I'm surprised too. He's the only dr in the area. I believe the next closest dr would be 3-4hrs away. I've got an excellent general medical dr and I'm going to be working closely with him during this process, and I think I'll get some great support through him. He's worked with many WLS patients. I'll figure this out and make this work. I'm thankful that overall I really do feel great and everything I've tried had set well and I have no problem taking in liquids. I'm supposed to see my surgeon again in March to discuss exercise so we'll see how goes. I'm determined to use this tool to meet my goals and be successful no matter what obstacles lay in my path. I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity I've been given. I'm not going to let this dr get me down! And I'm thankful for all of you!

I'm sorry your Dr acted that way often good surgeons have 0 bedside manner. As a nurse I've had to counsel patients after the fact. h-pylori is a bacteria just like phill said the symptoms people report vary from nothing to nausea the problem is your surgery can cause the same symptoms. When Dr's don't know what to do they often just blow it off rather than admitting they don't know.
Nausea is caused by acid build up most of the time. Prilosec is a treatment for gastric reflux and works by reducing acid production. Other ant-acids work to bind the acid and change the strength to more mild form of acid.
I hope I have explained this well enough. Knowing what you now know you can try some over the counter medications, like Tums. Do be careful to follow the directions. Too much ant-acid can make you feel just as sick.

My stomach gets like that when it is empty. The morning is the biggest issue. Too eat 5-6 times a day and it is scheduled. The hpylori can be adding to the issue. How much prilosec were you on? If only once a day, I would suggest twice. If it doesn't help, try a different type. I use zantac 2x/day which works differently than a ppi. Both can be found over the counter. My doctor prescribed this since it worked for me prior to surgery. I did great on it for the 2 weeks that he recommended. After being off for a couple weeks, I would not only get the nausea feeling in the morning, but I felt ravenous in the afternoon, like I could just eat and eat. I went back on it and feel great now. I would also suggest consulting your PCP, they should be able to guide you if your surgeon isn't.

Randy thank you. That makes total sense. I agree about the dr having poor bedside manner and blowing it off of he doesn't know what's going on. Maybe I'll try a different acid reducer. I drank some baking soda water (that's what I did when pregnant) and it helped so much more than the prilosec had been helping. I told my surgeon that I did that and he didn't seem to care either way. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to do that, but it helped at 3am when I had nothing else to turn to.

I was on 20mg of prilosec once a day. I am definitely going to consult my PCP on this matter as soon as I can. Thanks for the suggestions. I may give zantac a try because I have also felt that same ravenous feeling.

Sorry to hear that you are not feeling up to par and that you have fallen through the loop holes at the doctors.
I am 4 years post and I had VSG and still to this day feel nauseas if I have gone to long without eating. Everyone is different just wanted to let you know my experience.
All the best with the H-pylori and your sensitive tummy. :)
  • Thank you asia1967  it's good to know it's normal and I'm not alone.

    Would something like Alka-Seltzer help?
Just wondering since you mentioned drinking the baking soda water
