Exercising with back issues

Options
I had my sleeve surgery Dec 17th and I am finding it difficult to exercise. I have one herniated disc and spinal stenosis. I have a difficult time walking or standing for more than 20 minutes. I have been using a recumbent stationary bike for 15 minutes at a time. I'm looking for an exercise that will work with my back. My doctor used a single incision for my surgery so my incision is larger than the regular surgery. I still have trouble with the healing of the incision and don't to put pressure on it.

Any suggestions for exercises?

Look up chair exercises or check out your tv listing.
You don't have to do the exercises the same exact way theyre doing it, modify them to what works for you!

I do Deep water aerobic exercise two days a week for one hour. Water exercise is the best solution for back and joint pain. Swimming is also a good cardio exercise.

Prior to my Surgery I did water aerobics and swimming. I Plan on going back to that just as soon as my sutures heal.

Because of the damage to my lower spine and the arthritis in my lower spine, hips, knees, ankles, feet, I too am slightly limited in what I can and cannot do. In the beginning at 386 pounds, even walking was hard and like you I couldn't do more than 20 minutes at a time. So, once I hit 300 pounds I rewarded myself with a pilates machine. It's great strength training and works the core muscles. Since you have back issues, you know, the stronger the core muscles, the less back pain and problems. So along with the chair exercises (great idea 2BeHappy2!), see if you can try some pilates or yoga. There are moves and routines that don't require you to get down on the floor. I bought the platform for my Pilates machine just so I didn't have to use it on the floor. And let me tell you, now that I'm down 164 pounds, walking is no longer an issue. I can walk for hours/miles without pain. You have much to look forward to!

I have 4 bad discs and spinal stenosis. Exercise was near impossible for me in the months following my surgery. I;ve since had two steroid injections in my back and am mobilizing much better. I did water therapy during the bad pain times and that helped.

Move around as you are able. You don't want to upset those nerve endings. See if your primary doc can refer you to a pain specialist. Might help you a lot. Even a little movement helps weight loss. Just go up and down stairs.

I too have back issues and Pilates was my savings grace at the beginning. Started with Pilates and walking only for first 4 months. Now that I have lost weight I am now taking HIIT classes, Pilates, yoga, elliptical and stationary biking with out issues. Pilates was truely my savings grace to begin my exercises in my bag journey! Down 81lbs
