Dinner out with my sister

I was going to put this in one of the existing threads but I didn't want to break up the meal into separate threads. We don't see each other very often due to our busy schedule. It's been a year. She lives in Connecticut and I'm in NYC and even though it's only an hour apart we just lose track of time with life.
She wanted me to meet her new boyfriend which was nice. Glad to see her happy after getting divorced 2 years ago.
We went to a Puerto Rican restaurant in the city named Sofrito which people seem to love and I guess you end up paying for the name. The food was pretty good for sure but nothing I can't make myself. What I did not like was the $310 bill for dinner for 4 people. The place was directly next door to Mr. Chow and I would have switched to eat there just to say I ate there even though it would have been even more expensive. Manhattan is ridiculous sometimes. I'm sticking to Queens.
Dora on the left and my sister on the right:
Here's what we ate:
Drinks
Red and white Sangria
Appetizers
Ropa vieja quesadilla (Shredded beef quesadilla)
Alcapurria (Fried Taro root with beef picadillo)
Main course
Mine
Skirt steak with fries
Her's
Steak and onions with fried sweet plantains
Sister's
Paella
Her boyfriend
Pernil (Roast pork shoulder) with Arroz con guandules and fried sweet plantains
Dessert
Flan
Tres Leches Cake
Chocolate molten lava cake with vanilla ice cream

Although, not with a $300 bill. :noway:0 -
I agree about the $300 bill but considering that you had alcohol, apps, entrees and Dessert its really not that ludicrous, especially in NYC.
It all looks amazing, especially that quesadilla! I love ropa vieja!0 -
Oh YUM. That cake looks amazing. But yikes at the bill!0

Dinner looks good, but I would have had a heart attack when I got that bill!0

I don't think I'd ever spend $300 on a meal out... even for 4 people.
But it does look yummy! The Tres Leches cake and flan looks so good.0 -
I'm kind of with everyone. Food looks good, but not $300 good. And I'm surprised how much of us seem to love tres leches...0

I love love love Tres leches. It's my favorite. But last night I grabbed my spoon and cut into the moist cake getting all sorts of cream on the spoon, I was happy it looked so yummy as I put it in my mouth then suddenly got an overwhelming taste of................cinnamon.
Oh that's sad. I actually don't think I've ever had Tres leches anything. But I love cake.0 -

I can't really enjoy Tres Leches cake anymore, because of the wedding cake fiasco. My mother-in-law insisted on getting us our wedding cake, but then she wouldn't get what I wanted. She insisted on using this spanish bakery in my home town that only does tres leches. So we got that for the groom's cake, but I really wanted sugar flowers for mine, so she ordered a cupcake tree and some strawberry cupcakes for me, and then I got some sugar flowers from amazon to put on them. They were the worst cupcakes I've ever had. So. very. dry. Whipped cream instead of icing. The only thing I could think is that it must not matter if the cake is dry if you're going to tres leches it (yes, that's a verb now) so they didn't know how to make good regular cake. Since you all know me you ought to know what a big deal good cake is to me, although I didn't bake then or I would have made it myself.
Anyway the whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth (ha!) so I've never been a fan of tres leches since then.0 -
Yum both the steaks looked yummy!
Had to Google what Paella was lol.0 -
It all looks really delicious, the $300 bill doesn't surprise me, that's part of the reason I stay out of the city Hope you washed away that cinnamon taste with something good.
Amber that's horrible, bad cake is just a sad thing. You need to make yourself a good cake for one of your anniversaries, to try and replace that memory0 -
Oh wow, yum. But the price...0

3 of us spent $350 for 3 steaks, 3 sides, 1 water, 1 coffee, 1 beer, 1 shared-appetizer. At a non-descript, self-described uppity restaurant. Free dessert (for one), no dessert (for two). that price included a 20% tip. Was it worth it? Not.on.your.life.
Never again.0
