Archilles issue - from DU's

So a month or so ago I did Annie 2 days in a row and hurt my archilles to the point where I can't run and definately can't skip. I haven't torn or anything, it just really hurts when I run/skip. Normal walking and other CF excersises are fine.
I've iced, seen a physio who strapped and rested but it's still playing up. Has anyone had this?
If so, is it just time & rest that heals?

Could it be from tight calves? I have to roll my calves constantly with a pvc pipe or rumble roller to keep my achilles and/or plantar fasciitis for acting up. As well, a soft tissue injury can take 6 to 12 weeks to heal.

I don't mess with my Achilles. I'd get it checked out and if necessary shut things down until its better.

Ugh. I've been dealing with achilles tendinopathy for the last year now (after being a bit too vigorous with DU's and rebounding box jumps). It really sucks, I hope you can nip it in the bud early. I don't know how old you are, but from what I've read/discussed with my doctors, this is a particularly tough area to heal because there isn't a lot of blood flow to the area (especially for the 40 plus crowd). Rest until you are pain free, then slowly come back to impact stuff. Stretch achilles, calves, work on ankle mobility. If it doesn't go away in a couple weeks or comes back, see your doctor. For me, ankle mobility, glute isolation exercises and eating really, really cleanly helped. But it keeps coming back when I get lax. If it becomes another other than just a short term thing, ask your doc for a referral to physical therapy, they may be able to determine if you have weaknesses or alignment issues that contribute to the problem.

Thanks all - I'm cancelling all training this week. Feeling fatigued and burnt out after training/competing for the past 3 months anyway, not feeling the love. Hopefully it will give it the rest I need and will be back next week ready to hit it again.

This is a wise idea, IMO. I tend to do it every three months or so. I will just do some light cardio and mobility work and that's about it.

Though I don't want to believe it, I'm 44 going on 45 and my body can't do what it could do when I was in my 20s.

Hello Mummyadams, I know exactly what you are going through. It got so bad for me last summer I could barely run! I did all the icing and stretching I could but it just wouldn't go away. Then I told the instructors at my Box about this issue and that I was going to substitute any exercises that would irritate my Achilles. I stopped doing rebounding from box jumps and did step up and step downs. I replaced rowing for running and I replaced KB squats for DU. Focused on stretching my calves daily and in about a month I was able to do the above without pain. One thing that I have noticed is the instructors rarely have us doing Box Jump Rebounds and instead have us do Box Jump step downs. I think this is a good decision... less stress on Achilles and knees.

^I never jump down from my box jumps. I am beyond paranoid about blowing out my Achilles.

Yeah our head coach doesn't even let us. We're allowed to every so often in skill practice but no jumping down from boxes in WODs ever

No jump downs here either, just not worth the risk for an extra .001 seconds.

I’ve always stepped down, but recently read an article that jumping down would overtime increase posterior muscular power and speed. Speed is an modality I struggle with. I was thinking I might try it a few times once I’m really warm and am comfortable with the WOD. I might drop to a 20 inch the first time I try it.

Hello AllanMisner, are you talking about just jumping down from the box or rebounding back up to the box? Rebounding is what originally made my Achilles sore however I do them once in a while in case I will need to do them in a competition.

Yes, basically rebounding. Currently, I set my feet and jump up. Step down and repeat. I have been researching, coming off the box with both feet and rebounding back up. I know it will only cut a fraction of a second off each jump. I’m more looking to increase speed and power to benefit the OLY lifts and maybe double unders.

Yep - never jump down from box either - always step.
I went to a pole dancing hens night on the weekend and while I managed to hang upside on the pole I have blown out my hip - FML - when will I learn I am NOT in my 20's or 30's anymore!

You’re not going to see me trying pole dancing any time soon. ;-)
