Not sure if this is normal or not (hoping it's not something i'll have to deal with forever now)...i'm getting terrible heartburn/acid reflux type stuff the last several days and nights. Prior to this i think i've only ever had it 1 or 2 times during my pregnancies many years ago. My surgeon has had me on Pantoprazole 40 mg x1 daily since my surgery, but it isnt even coming close to keeping it under control, and it's also making my stomach very queasy. is this normal after VsG? if you've had this happen what's working/worked for you? Any advice/tips would be much appreciated...this is horrible.

I had this right after surgery and I had never had it before so it was a very strange sensation/feeling for me. I was on prescriptions strength Ranitidine for the first 3 mos post-surgery. I would take 1 pill in the morning and 1 at night. I actually noticed no reflux/heartburn after about the first 2-3 weeks on the Rx. After 3 mos I stopped taking the Rx and I haven't had any problems since. Maybe you should check w/your surgeon about switching meds.

Mine was really, really bad for the first 12 weeks. I had to sleep sitting in a chair to avoid "throwing up" acid all night long. If I laid flat, I'd have to put towels under my head to catch the acid that would come up through my mouth and nose at night. That caused constant coughing from the acid irritation. Sorry if this is TMI, but it does explain how I ended up dehydrated week 3 post op.

My surgeon and NUT assured me it would get better. It finally started improving after 12 weeks and I rarely have reflux at night unless I eat something too late at night. I decreased my omeprazole from 2 per day to one per day with the hope of weaning off of it over the next few months.

I have heard that sleeves can get this though it usually goes away after a while. For me it didn't. I was sleeved on April 26, 2010. The reflux began at four months post-op and never stopped. I was even vomiting bile at random times, day or night. On January 20, 2015 I converted to RNY and feel so much better! I think mine is worst case scenario. I hope no one has to go through that, ever! Hope yours resolves quickly. BTW: I was on ranitidine and Prilosec the whole time and it made no difference for me.

I take protonix and ranatidine...protonix is the strongest they have...careful you aren't eating acidic foods...I drank some orange juice before bed and got bad heat burn/reflux...if I don't eat right before bed I don't get it...
