Side group target goal

I just finished reading through all the introductions up to this point. A lot of us either do walking or running of some form. Or are want to get motivated to do more of some form of either.

Sara brought up the suggestion of a group goal. Like an overall target number for something as a group we can try to beat. Im thinking overall miles walked/ran during this challenge. What does everyone think? What do you think would be a good number? Or should we try and track something else?

Im going to be creating the new spreadsheet in the next few days so if we do I want to have that worked in. Just an extra column each week to enter your total miles thats completely optional if you want to do it.

I think that the overall miles walked/ran sounds great!

That's a great idea! How would it work--that we together try to hit a certain number per week?

I think committing to a certain number a week is good. I am aiming for 50 on my bike or elliptical since I rarely measure miles walked. I wonder if everyone who wishes to participate in this put in whatever miles per week was a suitable goal for her/himself, we could calculate our group's weekly combined goal. We could do special mini-challenges along the 7-week period to exceed that goal - for example, everyone go an extra mile for the week, or simply beat the previous week's total. That sort of thing just might get those of us needing to rev up our motivation just the kick we need. Another thought I had was if someone was having a tough week for whatever reason - illness, family needs, etcetera - the rest of us might just step up our game to do a few extra miles on that person's behalf and thereby help the group reach our goal for the week. Just some of my random thoughts on this. I am excited!

Oh, THIS is where all the cool kids are! I'm in for 15 miles/week. I'm so glad I climbed out of my hole and started logging and exercising again. Thanks for being so inspiring, guys.

Stephanie and Cumberland--I like what you both suggested. It would help breaking down the over all goal into weekly amounts. That would help keep us motivated to see how we are doing and what we need to step up to do better on the/a spreadsheet. I love spreadsheets. They are motivating and show data real well. I'm not sure how many miles I can do in a week. I've been doing the elliptical as my knee allows me, but, I've only been paying attention to the amount of time and calories burned. ....same thing with the stationary bike, which I just started doing and have done twice for about 18 min each time. I would like to shoot for 2 miles a day I think. That would be a great goal for me. LOL--that stationary bike is kicking me. But, that just shows how much I need to improve.

Im thinking set up an overall large number for a target group goal. Where all our totals will combine to try and beat the group's goal. As for each week there will be a column to enter your numbers you walked/ran/rode. Elliptical, treadmills and bikes are all welcome. But each person can set in there mind the total number they want to get to.

For the group total im thinking of using 5000miles. It sounds like a lot but that currently works out to about 20 miles a week per person in the group. Plus I know if I bike I hit more miles then if I walked or ran. If more join then then number per person will shrink. You don't have to hit that number each week if you don't want or cant. Just give yourself in your head a number that you want to hit each week and try and beat it.

I like Sara's idea of trying to beat our prior weeks numbers. We can do a weekly mini goal thread to check in and say what our mile goal for that coming week are.

My goal is to have the spreadsheet up tonight since its an off day at the rescue. I will actually get home at a decent time and be able to work on it while not falling asleep. Please let me know if you have a different idea for the groups total or a different way to see this done. Im open to suggestions.

Spreadsheet is now posted. Please let me know if I screwed anything on there up. I did it late last night and trying to juggle back and forth between 3 copies of the spreadsheet (Easter Google doc everyone can edit and I have everything originally on Excel so Easter and Memorial Day Excel) That then for some reason this time took me forever since I kept putting and linking the wrong tabs!

Super job with the spreadsheet! I did notice something when I logged in my info tonight. I put my daily miles in the 1st week's mile column and the over all miles column didn't add it in there. Maybe you're going to do that later. I want to learn how to do Google spreadsheets. I'm pretty good with Excel, but, I've never worked with Google spreadsheets yet. I've heard from others on MFP that Google spreadsheets are more difficult than using Excel.

Fixed it. I didn't pull the formula down column far enough. It should work now.
