Two stupid questions related to running

1. I have been working on building my aerobic base by building up my mileage. I have been averaging 30-35 mpw for the last couple of months and should average about 40 mpw for the next 2 weeks. On April 22, I am having my wisdom teeth out and was told not to exercise for 2 weeks. This is not a super long lay-off, so can I jump right back into it or do I need to build back up to 40 mpw over a period of a few weeks?

2. In terms of aerobic conditioning, does 3 two mile runs have the same effect as one 6 mile run?

Like I said, pretty stupid questions, but inquiring minds want to know what you experts think.

    1. If these are easy base building miles, I'd go right back to 40, but allow myself more variance concerning pace.

    2. No as duration increases heart rate drifts upward. Training for longer distances allows you to condition yourself to become more comfortable as the distance increases.

    I concur with both responses.

    Agreeing with dalhectar re: #2.

As for wisdom teeth, I think you can basically jump back in where you left off if the removal isn't too invasive. I remember when I got mine out while 1/2 training in HS, and they had to get cut up and dug out (yay for tiny jaws!), and the first week or so that I was back running, the air hitting those healing sockets was really uncomfortable. So if it's going to be chilly, maybe run on a treadmill where the air will be warmer. And just to be safe, plan to run your miles nice and slow your first week back :)

I know it's different for each person depending on what they have to do to remove them, but two weeks with no exercise kind of surprises me. I had no exercise restrictions after I had all 4 removed, including 2 that were partially impacted. I went for an hour hike the afternoon after the surgery with gauze still in my mouth

Rally, you're younger than Lori and she also has some medical conditions which is why I would assume the 2 week break. I got to keep my wisdom teeth since they fit in my mouth well lol.

I think jumpin back into 40mpw and going a tad slower would work. If time is a problem, it might end up 35mpw instead lol

When I got mine out, they told me to take 2 weeks off or else I could make the blood flow through my mouth too much and I would either a) move blood clots and DIE or b) my sockets would bleed and I could choke and DIE.

In hindsight, they were probably giving me overcautious advice. But since all 4 were impacted and I didn't want to die, I followed them to a T. ;)

Yeah, I probably should have qualified that I am 43 and am on immunosuppressant therapy. My doctor told me to forget what others may say about their experiences with wisdom teeth and plan on taking at least a week off from work and not resuming my normal activity for 2 weeks. As I am already somewhat terrified about this procedure, I plan to follow that advice, regardless of how I am feeling. The question is not really about whether I need to take 2 weeks off, it's more about how I should come back. Thanks for all of your responses!

Good call. Listen to your doctor!
