Hey girls,

I was put on Metformin last year at this time, It did improve my A1C and testosterone, as evidenced by my August and December blood draws. However, at my most recent appt my A1C and fasting glucose were pretty close to diabetic ranges, so my doc decided to get aggressive and put me on Victoza. She said "insurance is sometimes pretty slow to approve, so here are some samples to get you through", well when I went to pick it up, its $680!!! For 30 days... I asked what I could do to lower the cost and they suggested a discount card from the manufacturer. Got that, it only knocks off $100. So I'm still stuck with a $580 med every month. I can't afford it! Is anyone here on Victoza?? How do you afford it??

Could you talk to your doctor about it? Some doctors offices carry a free Rx card that you can use. I don't know if that would help, but it seems like anything is worth a shot! (for the record, I haven't taken this).

I would tell your doctor that the plain and simple truth is that if he wants you to be on this medication, he needs to talk to your insurance and convince them.

That being said, it is still possible to move the numbers on the right direction by going lower carb while on Metformin... Doing a lower carb, higher fat, and more moderate protein can boost the effects of meds like Metformin and such.

And no, I've never had this problem with a medication. Any medication I've gone to take that was too expensive, I refused to pick it up and made my provider call in something I can afford.

I have the discount card, that's how I can get $100 off. To get free meds I have to have a combined household income of $26K/yr and we make more than that.

    PS This is WITH insurance

Try Canadian suppliers. Sometimes you can get a medication for fat cheaper there. My mom does this for my stepdad's COPD meds.

I agree with Knit, too. Try a low carb, high fat diet and see if that improves things.

Thanks Dragon. I'm currently not eating, errr well close to it. I eat what I can stomach which today was coffee, chicken, celery w/ pb and pineapple. All in very small quantities. If I get an appetite back I'll be doing LCHF. I've been low carb for about a year though, around 75g a day
