" portion of the Sony Hack involving a list of the required and forbidden characteristics of Peter Parker — as contractually agreed upon within a licensing agreement — revealed that the studios have some extremely staunch characteristics for the character to abide.

Per Gawker, Peter Parker is required within the leaked Marvel-Sony docs to be male, straight, Caucasian, and middle class.

The issue of Peter’s sexuality is mentioned twice in the list — with one portion stating he should not be a homosexual “unless Marvel has portrayed that alter ego as a homosexual” — which appears to hand off the decision to the receiving studio. But then under the next section, the character is mandated to be “Caucasian and heterosexual.” Period. End of story. No qualifiers.

FWIW, Peter is also forbidden on this list from having sex before the age of 16, abusing alcohol, using any four letter werdy derds, and smoking tobacco."

I don't see a problem with any of that - all those qualities are central to his character, as he has always been written. As for him always being a white guy, again, not a problem... unless it really is a crime to be white, as a growing number of people seem to think it is.

I'm more concerned that no one has yet been able to make a decent Spidey film. Who knows, maybe MCU will.

Meh. Hollywood usually sees no problem in turning non-white characters of other original and/or popular properties white (or they just got a totally convincing tan), but of course precious cinnamon bun Peter Parker is off limits.

It states Peter Parker can't be anything but white. I wish MCU would have done Miles Morales personally and let Sony continue to ruin Peter Parker Spider-Man...

Keep in mind that they're trying to create a product that will appeal commercially to a mass market. And most average folk (aka non-geeks) only know Spiderman as Peter Parker. I can understand why they would want to hew to the familiar and mainstream to protect their investment. Which still leaves a fair amount of leeway in casting other characters that potential viewers may be less familiar with. And when your confidence flags, just remember that Samuel L. Jackson is the only Nick Fury that many people know.

On the other hand, I'm really curious about the new Fantastic Four movie that has deviated from the traditional casting in their characters.
