I am looking at getting a Surge. I like the idea that it recognises different exercises but how does it do it.

If I was to go to the gym and use the treadmill first do I need to start an activity then a treadmill run? Will it then know when I've finished my run and moved onto weights or do I start & stop the treadmill run then start & stop a weight session etc

As far as I can tell (and I'd be glad to be wrong), the Surge detects exercise with the GPS. So my indoor exercises aren't tracked the way I expected.
I no longer use 'Bike' because it starts looking for satellite confirmation.
But I do switch between 'Elliptical' and 'Strength' or 'Circuit training'.

Not sure whether I should ALSO log the exercise specifics in MyFitnessPal (which I use as my more robust food and activity tracker).

I have a surge and go to the gym. If I'm on Treadmill I set it to Tread mill mode. I then switch to Elliptical if I do that, or weights if I'm going round using the weights machines. For rowing I select workout mode, and then I update to Rowing on the fitbit app later. For classes I set to the specific class... if its more aerobic/cardio (like Zumba/Dancercise etc) I select workout, and again update on the app later. There is already Spinning, Yoga and Pilates under the Exercise category.
