Newbie with a couple questions

I'm a newbie to both SL 5x5 and to weightlifting in general. New to anything but being a couch potato, really. I work nights in a hospital and flip back and forth to dayshift so I'm concerned about not being able to strictly lift MWF and might have to move my days a day ahead or back in order to fit in 3 a week. Is that a big deal? Also, what do I do if the bar alone is too heavy? I'm headed to the gym this morning for my first workout and I'm a little nervous but mostly I'm super excited to get going and make myself one of the success stories I've seen all over this group!

    I'm pretty consistent with my days, but if I have to miss for whatever reason I just fit it another time. I try not to stress myself out about it too much, but as a rule of thumb I make every effort to stay on schedule. I think if you get 3 in each 7 day period you're good. My schedule right now is T/TH/SA - sometimes I miss Saturday so I do it Sunday. If that doesn't work either then I just miss a lift that week and pick up the schedule the following week (or shift to MWF for a week.

    What Deena_Bean said, as long as you get 3 days in a 7 day period. My schedule is usually Tues-Fri-Sun my two days off being wed and thurs.

    If the bar is too heavy, I think you can do them with dumbbells. I think there is various alternative lifts with them, just do a quick google search.

    I work 2 days on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off. They're all day shifts, 12 hrs, but I find it hard to stay consistent with days. I just do my best to stick with the plan as close to possible, but I don't do MWF, just whatever days work best with my schedule, and no more than 3 days between lifting. Do the best you can, with adequate rest and not too many days off in a row. It's better than sitting on the couch. :)

    yeah, i kind of go with the no-more-than-two-days-off rule as well. plan b rule after that is 'twice a week if at all possible'. and plan c rule is 'don't care when the last time was you were in - just don't quit'. life happens and keeps happening, so too much militancy about 'if you were really dedicated . . . ' just doesn't jive with my life or my temperament.

    you'll make progress regardless, probably. you may not do it in strictly linear format, but imo nobody does anyway because life happens (see above). and who's keeping score on you anyway? no-one here will, i promise ;-)
