Surge or Blaze for runners?

It might be a little early to ask this since the Blaze is so new, but I'd like opinions about which of these would be better for running/working out: the Surge or Blaze. I like the look of the color screen of the Blaze and feel like it might work best for me because I do run early in the morning when it's still a bit dark. Does the Surge have a backlight? I like that the Surge has GPS on it's own and doesn't need my phone; however, I always take my phone with me for safety reasons anyway, so I don't know why I would really care about that! Anyway, just looking for opinions! I plan to wear the Alta for everyday and then one of these two devices for running/working out! I have been wearing my Garmin for running, but I don't use all the fancy schmancy features it provides and I really would like to wear only one thing on my wrist while working out, so I would like to replace Garmin with another Fitbit. Thanks in advance!!

I'm very happy running with my Fitbit Charge HR and the phone app.
The phone app has GPS (iPhone 6) and announces your distance, time and average pace every km.
Because it has a HR monitor, the Fitbit Charge HR gives accurate calorie burns.0 -
Thank you! I do like the Charge HR, but for running, I really prefer something with a display, at least of my mileage, on my wrist.0

I've enjoyed my Blaze so far, works well with mapmyrun and I looked at it the same way you do, I always have my phone on me so no need for GPS. The blaze also as a slimmer profile which I liked over the surge. Display is nice and easy to see but you sometimes have to tap the face to wake it up if it doesn't recognize the turn of the wrist to bring up the display.0

Thanks, Azercord! Do you find the screen hard to read outside at all or is it okay? I haven't considered using mapmyrun with it...what is the advantage of adding mapmyrun with Blaze, if you don't mind my asking?0

I've got the light setting maxed out and I can see it just fine out side (in the AZ sun) with my sunglasses on. No real advantage in using mapmyrun over any of the other running programs (including the one in fitbit) other than the fact that I already used it before my fitbit and it is all setup and going. Now it just feeds distance and maps to my fitbit to keep it on track while tracking my yearly progress and distances that I've intentionally run (versus the daily total distance thing that fitbit does)0

Given that phones seem to keep getting bigger and bigger, I do think the on-board GPS is something worth considering in the long-term. You may not mind running with your phone now, but you might feel differently in a year or two when it's the size of a dinner plate. (Heh.) I quit running with my phone on the last upgrade - my phone is officially wider than my arm, now. DH got the iPhone 6+ and hasn't even tried running with it - so he has mad love for the Fitbit Surge and will sing its praises to anyone who will listen.
If I may piggyback on this thread - is it even POSSIBLE to use two fitbits with the same account and switch back and forth? Like, I use the One now, but if I bought the Alta and wanted to just pick one or the other at any given time, like an accessory (ooh, the Alta looks good with my outfit today!) does that work? How does the fitbit app know how to do that?0 -

Can anybody recommend me if Alta would be good for me? I run three times a week and walk the dog almost every day. I like how it looks, but not sure if any other fitbits would be a better option?0

I have the Surge and yes, it has a backlight. When I'm in bed, I can usually get the backlight to turn on automatically when I move my arm to look at it (it must know from the arm movement that I'm trying to see the time). Sometimes I have to tap the face to turn on the backlight, though.0

I loved my surge, then got a blaze for my birthday and haven't had the surge on since. However I'm fairly gym based at the moment. I have just entered a 10k so need to get back running outside and I know I'll default to the surge for that to preserve my phone battery.0
