Figuring out the pouch

Hi there,
Had bypass 8 days ago. My 2nd week I am able to advance to full liquids and puréed foods. I am using recipes I have found in bariatric blogs, as well as blended chicken salad.
Does anyone have anything they recommend, and how long did it take to figure out how much to eat and how fast/slow to eat? Last night Inhad dumping syndrome. My food was not blended but was very soft and I chewed 20 times each small bite (it was Eggface's crock pot pot roast) and I had 5-6 bites or so and got sick as a dog. I have no desire to eat right now and will probably have shakes today. Finding myself frustrated right now and I know eventually I will resume some sense of normalcy but right now I just don't know what to do. Thanks!

You may have been advanced too quickly for your stomach. Or, meat may be too much. I was on clear liquids for seven days, all liquids for 14 days, purees for 14 days, then soft foods for a minimum of 14 days. My surgeon preferred to do it that way because it gave our stomach plenty of time to get used to new foods and consistencies.
I know when I was on clear liquids, I was able to take down about a cup in a sitting. When I moved to all liquids, I poured a cup and only took in half. Purees were about the same.
It definitely takes trial and error. I got to the point where I would under pour/puree, eat, and if still hungry I'd pour more. Even now, there are times I make a plate, then end up with leftovers.
I'd avoid non-ground meats right now. Even though pot roast is cooked soft, it is still fibrous in that form. You want things like ground chicken, turkey, beef (although some have issues with beef for a while), canned tuna and chicken. Pork is the one meat most people seem to complain about.0 -
Ok that's good to know! I can't eat yet (too sick) but I plan to have some shakes made with milk when I am able to eat again and see how it goes. As always, appreciate your help!0

Since you had RNY and most of us had VSG, there's a little difference in things that are different for us.
For example, with VSG, the great curvature portion of the stomach is removed. That happens to be the primary area of the stomach that produces gherlin, the hunger hormone. Many of us are lucky enough to not feel hunger for months. I'm at almost 6 1/2 months and still nada. My pancreas isn't picking up the slack. To be honest, I hope it never does. With RNY, the Vagus nerve is severed to split the stomach. This causes the hunger sensation to be interrupted temporarily. How long depends on how quickly your stomach heals.
Now, I assume, since you are still early out you don't feel hungry. Because you are not hungry, try to slow down your eating. Pick up your spoon, fork, whatever, put food in your mouth and put the utensil down. Chew until it's nearly liquefied. Obviously, that won't take long with pureed and liquids, but the habit is forming. Don't take another bite right away. As our foods become more dense it will take longer to chew and swallow, so get used to that time now.
Another thing about swallowing. Many of us have developed the habit, horrible habit, over the years of shoveling, partially chewing, shoveling more, chewing, swallowing. Swallow small. Big swallows can hurt. Small bites, masticate fully, small swallow.1 -
That's great advice and I have been trying to focus on small bites and chewing them like crazy0
