Anyone used the Wahoo RPM Cadence Sensor ?

I'm talking about the little blue one, that can either stick to the inside of a crank, or can be mounted on your shoe-straps... Little ANT+ and BT4 gizmo.

Here's why I'm asking. My 2 main bikes now have powermeters on them... so, I've no need for the previous Garmin GSC10's. Which is good, because I've never really liked the look of them strapped to the chainstay. Like a big black Wart.

Now, for the "retro build" things are a little different. There's no powermeter (strangely enough Campag weren't offering them with the Victory Groupset...) so all I've got for feedback is GPS tracking speed and my HR belt. Really don't want to start fitting magnets and GSC10's on the stays - even the garmin is on the rubber-band QR rather than my customary out-front mount, in case I need to remove the mount for a photo-call...

So, I was thinking, if the Wahoo Gizmo works okay, just to get one and hide it under the "lace cover flap" of my old-school cycling shoes... that way I get the look, and the data... but there's no point if the Wahoo RPM doesn't work well...

    I have one. Yes.

I use it on my Fixed Gear, and my Mountain Bike. That's why I bought it. My Road Bike has Garmin Speed sensor on the hub, and the cadence sensor is in the crank. So i wanted something I could swap between the two other bikes.

I do find it works well. IT will come with a little clip that you place under your laces/velcro straps law the sensor on it, the twist lock it into place. And it will come with a rubberized housing you can zip-strap to the weak side/left of the crank.

I would be more than willing to take pictures and/or video if you would like.

    sounds good...

attaching to the back of the crank won't work - the Classic old Campag. cranks are much narrower in profile than modern ones, and the back of the (heavily sculpted) crank is actually narrower than a bare CR2032 battery-so the "pod" would be wider than the overall crank width - that's why I was thinking of something I can stick on the shoe instead...

You can probably see how narrow the back of the cranks are on this shot...

I'll admit it, with that particular bike, function definitely follows form... it's all about it "looking right" if I'm honest - and it's really only an occasional "sunny sunday afternoon special" - but I do like at least basic stats, so if I can have everything "body-wearable" instead of strapped onto the bike it'll not spoil the "retro vibe" look.

You take your computer mount off for photos?

I've never heard a bad word about Wahoo's sensors, and your plan is logical. Do you have a pair of C&V shoes, maybe you can just leave the rpm in the shoe and not have to do anything special to ride this bike.

If you could see the bars, and the non-1989 or prior hunk of black plastic and rubber on there, then, yes... I might have a go and re-wire the Avocet 20 for a proper "period correct" computer, and just throw the garmin in my back-pocket. Yep, I'm a bit obsessive. I'm not on about "happy snap" photo's BTW, i'm talking about proper staged pictures of the bike (my other money-pit of a hobby is photography...)

that was the idea, my old shoes are lace-up, with a flap over the laces, so the idea was to hide the RPM under that flap, nothing visible...

Here are a few other ideas. Not that you asked, but talking about bikes is fun.

I got a Garmin watch a year and a half ago. It talks to my power meters and other sensors. I wear it on my wrist when I ride, so it's not part of the bike for photos. Way less convenient to look at anything, but more convenient in other ways. And pricey, of course.

And here's a GPS computer that does ride tracking and other things. I think the gauge display is silly, my speed as a % of what it can display doesn't make sense to me. But it's probably closer to what you have in mind.

I understand the OCD around photos. I think OCD comes with road bikes. I might have to replace my bike, there's one I'm interested in, it pretty much checks all my boxes, but it's kind of fugly, and I'm not sure I can get past that. Even the last time I bought a climbing rope, color (to show up in photos) was a big part of it. I guess I think of my Garmin as part of my bike, so I leave it in pictures. For sure, it's no uglier than my hydraulic brifters.

found this in the "big box of old bike bits" - at least it's the proper period... (ish... The '20 that I also found is Dead as a doornail sadly, but the 50 works fine!)

I take the point about just wearing a GPS watch, but, for the "smiles not miles" rides I'm likely to do on that particular bike, the 520 in my back pocket works fine, for £250 less...

Makes sense. You should post a pic when it's done, show us how it came together.

I have the wahoo sensor wich has worked well but mine has been attached to the crank. Never tried in in the shoes so I can't speak for how well that method works. They claim it should and don't see why it wouldn't.
