The First Heart Transplant
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them." Ezekiel 36:26, 27
Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the 44-year-old son of a minister, and a team of 30 associates performed the first human heart transplant at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Capetown, South Africa back in 1967. It made world-wide headlines and now, all these years later, heart transplants have become common place! And many people are able to extend their lives for decades because of this amazing operation.
But while Dr. Barnard performed the first transplant on the human body, the Lord performed the first most important heart transplant 2000 years ago! Because of Jesus millions of men, women and children receive heart transplants that don't allow us to live only a few more years or even decades. The transplant He gives us allows us to live forever!
Unlike Dr. Barnard's operation which is now performed by thousands of physicians around the world, Jesus is still the only One who can take our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh. And with our new heart, we gain eternal life . . . the life of God!
The Apostle Paul puts it this way, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation." 2 Corinthians 5:17, 18
The life we receive is the same life Adam gave away. In Genesis 3:24 we see what happened: "So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the Garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life." Adam lost access to the tree of life for all mankind. Jesus gives anyone who believes in Him access to it once again!
He is the Life! And we have a new heart that gives us an abundant life now and an even greater life forevermore.
