Weight has always been a bit of a struggle for me (runs in the family). Some years I mastered it better than others. The last 5yrs were pretty tough on my body & was diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome (very similar to fybromialgia). I was already overweight and I ended up adding on about 60lbs during that time.
So I've decided to make this year about getting my health back!! I'm making it a top priority. Back in the day I used to love to work out & want to feel that way about it again too!

G'day Friends! My name is Stacey and Im really just here to show you that if you want to loose 100lbs then you totally can! But you have to really want it, like more than anything else. You also have to be prepared and know that the road to success is not straight up, it has twists, backflips and u-turns. You will fall off the wagon, gain back some weight and then feel like crap and go eat more cause you did. Just see it this way, when you do fall off the wagon you have to get back on. Its like going on vacation and taking a wrong turn, do you just turn go home and not go on vacation? No, you get back on track until you reach your destination. If you get a flat tire, do you just puncture the other three tires and stay where you are? No, you fix that one and move on.
I was obese my entire life, and by that I mean through primary school, high school and then as an adult until about 7 years ago ( I was 29), I was fat at 315lbs, with two kids going down the same track I had. So I changed my life, not all at once but very slowly to include healthy habits that I could live with. I stress that I COULD LIVE WITH! Cause my life is not your life! We have our own struggles, our own things we deal with. In no way is my life harder or easier than yours, just different.
I hope that I can be of some help to any or all of you. Add me if you like, I myself have had a set back with a dislocation in my right shoulder so yes, Ive gained back some weight with my feeling sorry for myself and not being able to deadlift and bench and squat with the guys at my gym. But that said, I wont let that stop me from being a badass and doing what each and everyone of you is capable of, picking myself up, pulling on my big girl knickers and getting on with it.

Hey everyone,
My name is James, and my weight has steadily gotten worse since college. Just after Christmas, I joined a gym and stepped on the scale... 270lbs... ouch. At 5'4" that is a scary number, I was literally carrying around a second person with me.
Now after two months I am sitting here at 233.1lbs, and ready to drop some more. I'm sick of being tired when chasing my 2 and 3 year old children, and frankly I want to live long enough to enjoy any future grandchildren they have.
What has worked for me so far:
1. No sodas, period
2. Hit the gym 3 days a week for 30min weights, 15min cardio
3. 30min walk every night before bedtime
4. Track everything i eat
5. Everytime I think about having a snack, I drink a glass of water, and then ask myself if i want to gain XX calories, or do I want to lose xx calories. I pick "lose" more than I would have expected
6. Recognize that one mistake does not equal a ruined day, week, or month. No more revenge binge.

Hi all!
I'm 27 years old, have been overweight for as long as I can remember, but things really got out of control when I moved away from home 7 years ago. Since then I've been trying to do something about it several times but haven't been able to really go the distance. I just started again this monday after a long hiatus, and I have every intention to make it to the finish line this time. Have about 130lbs to lose, give or take a few. It's not going to be easy, but with hard work, a positive attitude and good support i'm sure it can be done. So let's do this!

Ola, I'm a middle-aged woman, and like many of the folks who have posted here, I have been overweight since I was in pre-school. I have done the same yo-yo diet thing that so many people have done, but with the help of a medical weight-loss firm and MFP, I am making real progress. I am 5'5" and needed to lose about 140 lbs total.

I've been doing this since early December of 2015, and I've lost 80 lbs so far, mostly with calorie restriction alone. My current challenge is exercise, I'm really struggling to do it consistently, but I knew that I had to make one change at a time, and food was the far more important change to make first. I have PTSD from childhood trauma, and it took a lot of time to figure out how to deal with the PTSD triggers without food. I'm happy to be a part of this group, and I'm looking forward to talking with all of you. I love to read, and write, and loved LOTR, but haven't gotten into the online portions (yet).8 -

I'm a bit LOTR fan as well. Loved the books, then many years later I bought the audio CDs for cross country trips between Washington and Wyoming, then the well made movies came out.0

Who doesn't love LOTR (OK! I'm sure some people don't but I like to pretend that's not so ) I read the books in my teenage years and thought the movies were really well done!1

I absolutely loved both the books and the movies. I kinda wish they might do a movie on The Silmarillion. The Hobbit movies were good, but I feel like they were too unnecessarily "stretched out" over three films.1

Its amazing, though, how strict some of the hardcore Tolkien fans can be - I was on a forum for the MMORPG a few years back, and there was a very intense debate that raged for a long time over those movies versus the books versus even the game we were all playing. It actually had folks say they wish Jackson could be tried and sent to jail for the abomination that the movies were, and that they'd love to tar and feather him! And there seems to be a lot of passion even today over those movies.
The Hobbit movies I liked, I really did, but I told my mother after the 2nd one that while I defend the 1st 3 movies based on the trilogy as I felt Jackson did a good job of keeping the spirit of the books (yes, there were things he changed that I didn't see as necessary, but on the whole, they were a lot closer to the source material than many other novels-turned-to-movies!), I couldn't truly defend the Hobbit movies. I liked them, yes, but jackson really did a number on that series. I told my mother, who has never read the book, that jackson pretty much just through the book in a garbage can, set it on fire, and roasted marshmallows over the flames while deciding what he thought "should have" happened. lol I personally saw those 3 movies as a very elaborate, very expensive fan fiction piece, complete with their own Mary Sue!
But hey, I don't care - I liked them for what they were, and the books for what they were; there were things in the books I liked better, but some things in the movies I liked better - especially the characterizations. I re-read the Hobbit after the movies came out and realized that I didn't really like the characters in the book; I much preferred the movie versions. Though I agree with you, Anna4anna - 3 movies for the Hobbit story was a bit overmuch.
@Theo: are we talking the audio books or the audio dramatizations? There are 2 dramatizations - one done by the BBC, and the other by some American company. Neither one was great, in my own opinion, but the American was by far and large the worst *shudders at the memory of the "cow bell" accompaniment for the eagles singing to Minis Tirith - yes, a cow bell - I kid you not!*
I have the unabridged Silmarillion as an audio book. Sadly, Anna4anna, as much as I'd like to see some of the stuff in the Silmarillion be made, I don't look for it for a very long time. The Tolkien Estate owns the rights to it since it was published by Christopher Tolkien after his father's deaths, and he detested the movies and any and all fan-made products or merchandise. He wanted to stop the movies, but couldn't since his father had sold the movie rights to the trilogy, the Hobbit, and the information contained in their appendices. Anything that isn't contained in any of those, however, are still held by Christopher.

My name is Kate. I'm 35 and started out this journey a week ago at 284.2 and in the first week I'm down 1.6lbs to 282.6. I've been overweight pretty much my whole life. I've lost weight a few times but gained it back with both of my pregnancies. The last time I lost about 40lbs using MFP but when I got pregnant with my laat kiddo I gained it all back. Now that she is 1 and not nursing anymore I decided it's time to do this for good.6

I'm Chelsi, I'm 28 kind of big geek a mom of 2. I've lost 38 pounds since Ive started my path to a new life style.
I been over weight basically my entire life. I realized in second grade when another girl pointed out I had chubby fingers. In highschool I was about 180 and 5'3" and my senior year I was put on some medication that caused 60 pound weight gain in a few weeks. I never lost that weight. Then I just kept slightly tacking on a little over the years then I got pregnant with my son and I had some post partum and was put on something for that and gained back the weight I lost after having him. During the pregnancy with my daughter 2 years later I was 280 and found out I was diabetic. After she was born the diabetes stayed. I decided I needed to actually do something about my health and I continued a similar diet plan that I had for my pregnancy. But nothing was happening and I got discouraged and I just kind of gave up again. My diabetes was managed with medication at that point. In June 2016 something (I really dont know what exactly. I think it was a conversation with my doctor in combination with a manic episode starting, i suffer from bi-polar disorder) kicked me in gear and I started working my butt off. Double stroller walks, strict diet's where I religiously tracked everything I ate. And by October I'd dropped about 40 pounds but then I got complacent again and have been gaining and loosing the same 5lbs. So now I'm kicking myself again to get going because I still have 90 pounds to my goal weight of 150.
Food has always been a crutch and a way to comfort me. I have a hard time controlling cravings, mostly sugar related ones. I've been known to binge. And as far as exercise goes... well I'm not a fan.6 -

Hey there everyone! I am going to keep this a little short and sweet because I am sure we will get to know each other quite well over the coming weeks. I tried this whole weight loss thing before and failed time and time again and then always ended up bigger than when I started. I was always a thicker person but never obese until I got pregnant with my first child 11 years ago and never bounced back.
Now I can not stand myself. I am a food addict. I am a foodie. I am a food junkie. Whatever you want to call it. I love food, and when I say that I mean all food. healthy food, non healthy, the kind you find on food trucks, the kind in any restaurant. I love it all.
I started this journey to a better me a couple of weeks ago and have lost 8.4 pounds so far.

I have a very, very, very, long way to go. I want to be there for my children. I want to grow old with my husband. I want to be a better role model. I want so much out of life and I can not do it at the weight that I am at right now. My husband has severe heart issues that he was born with and has allowed himself to become morbidly obese, and is scares me that one day he will be gone because of his choices. He tries to commit to weight loss then gives up on himself. If I can show him it is possible with my goals and my changes for myself it might motivate him to want to set his own goals and to become healthy.

Hi all! I'm Jess. I've decided to really dig in and get healthy! I'm 29, married with 2 kiddos from his first marriage. They're my babies and I love them but it's awful that in out of shape enough that I can't keep up with them! I'm tired of always being tired and never having enough energy to do the things I want.
Currently working on changing my eating habits and getting that under my belt, also need to pick up some sneakers before I can actually start excersing...
I guess I struggle with not eating the snack foods... I'm a sucker for fruit snacks as silly as it sounds... and chocolate bars... and when we settle for the night and just relax thats when I start eating... I do better throughout the day until like 7, then we chill and I wanna snack...
I'm looking for others who may have the same issue who can help me along with not feeling like it's just me!3 -
I tend to want to eat most of my calories in the evening, too, so I simply keep breakfast and lunch leaner, don't snack in between, and save my calories for the day for the evening. I keep berries to snack on, or yogurt - they help with the sweet tooth. I"ve got some plain popcorn too - the kind you have to pop yourself on the stove - but I don't make it very often. Still, that kind has something like 2 or 3 cups as a serving; it might work for you as a snack. Other people have mentioned pickles. I've also found recipes for black bean brownies that I make with stevia or stevia blend to reduce calories and sugar content.
Keeping fruit around that you like - such as raspberries, strawberries, apples, whatever - might help with the cravings of an evening. Even dried fruit mixed with a little seeds or nuts - as long as you keep the portion size down - might help fill in the void of the fruit snacks. Best of luck!1 -

Im 53, married to the love of my life, and have one son, age 22, who lives in another state right now. I'm going to call my start weight, as of March 7, 2017 - 305. Not my all time high but close. I'm 5'10"...so big is relative. I want to weigh 200. 199 would be awesome.
I originally started MFP in January 2015, after being referred to a dietician because my A1c was 6. For those not in the know, 6.5 is considered diabetic (by my Dr. at least). After a year, I managed to GAIN weight. Not sure where I went wrong…except I just didn’t do anything right. Poor dietician. She tried. I’d lose a lb and gain 2. Not really paying attention. So...I quit posting eventually.
This is NOT my first rodeo. I've always been overweight...even as a little kid. My mom was a great country cook. She died at 60. Heart attack. Dad too...but in his 70's. I already take Lipitor and 3 blood pressure meds. You have to wonder why I let this happen, huh? The last time I remember being under 200 was about age 22. 10 years or so ago I lost 100 lbs on WW. Kept it off for a couple years, but it slowly came back on. I had only been 28 lbs from my goal. I have a realty stressful, very sedentary job. I don’t like exercise and love food. Not a good combination. Anyway, in December 2016 my a1c was up to 6.4 and my fasting blood sugar like 140 and I started on Metformin. My husband’s a1c is even higher than mine. In late February he got the news his has gone up to 7. His father and sister are diabetic and he kind of freaked out and really started getting serious - Me too. We’re watching what we eat, tracking every bit, and we both got a Fitbit on March 5 and started seriously walking. On the up side – my blood tests in March were WAY better – I’m back down to 6 and the fasting is high-normal. Most everything was better.
My weight was down to 305 as of that appointment. I haven't been able to weigh since, but plan on doing that at the Y on Sunday, which we joined so we have no weekend excuses. That will have to become my "official" scale until I can weigh at home...my scale at home only goes to 300. I'm too fat for it.

I don't think you have. I have been working with a registered dietician who is employed by an endocrinologist. For what it's worth, she told me that she sees great success with people who are in the 6 to 7ish A1C range - when they lose weight their numbers go down. She also told me that diabetes is as much a "disorder of non-movement" as it is of excess weight. It sounds like you're doing all the right things to deal with both of those causes, and you've already seen some results.

Hi! My name is Christina. I'm 35 years old and have struggled with my weight most of my life.
A year ago I had surgery to remove a bone spur that had grown into my Achilles' tendon and had a series of complications following that surgery, all the way up to a few days ago when I learned I have a small tear in the Achilles' tendon. I am now in a walking cast/boot, but must use a knee walker for longer distances.
I was creeping up towards 300 lbs and just couldn't let myself get there. I need to lose at least 100 lbs. I don't need to get to a super low weight or be crazy-toned, I just want to be healthier than I am now, and be able to do things I previously really enjoyed, such as horseback riding. I was involved in the horse community for many years and miss it very much.6 -
welcome, Christina! I've always wanted to take horseback riding lessons, but I never had opportunities growing up, and I've been way to heavy the rest of the time. That is one of my dreams - lose enough weight so I can take it up!1

Hello everyone, my name is Ty. First I liked to thank all of you for sharing your story. It helps to see that "wow I'm not the only feeling this way."
Second I'm not gonna lie I'm not much of a talker. I'm a very closed person so I'm going to try my best to share my story. But thank you to the person who shared this group with me.
So here it goes, I'm 22 years old 5'6 and about 300 lbs. I think my biggest problem is portion control and ( the contradictions) remembering to eat. I get so busy during the day and I forget to eat then all of a sudden I'm eating a meal meant for 3 people. My original max weight was 230 and I dropped down to about 180 and I was so proud of myself for losing the weight and being healthy. I loved the way I looked and felt. Then I started a new relationship and BOOM my weight skyrocketed to 300. I was so devastated. I don't blame the relationship I obviously had a choice in what I consumed. But nevertheless the weight gain happened. And now I was that to change. I want to get back to who I was or who I know I could be.
And yeah that's me.6 -

my ex-roommate has the same problem. She usually will only eat 1 meal a day, especially when she's working - she will not take a break while working (and she typically worked in fast food), and then, when her shift is over, she'd be ravenous, and would buy dinner most days before she left work - so she'd be getting a triple burger with super-size fries and an extra large soda, and would buy chips or candies on the way home, which she'd consume mindlessly that evening. She could never understand why she was so heavy when she was only eating 1 meal a day, never stopping to consider the sheer number of calories she was taking in, not to mention the horrible diet it was.

Hi! Frankie here and I just started last week. I'm a 31 year old mother of two beautiful boys. I had a difficult time recovering from my last c-section. I didn't gain weight during my second pregnancy but ended up putting on after I had him (breastfeeding makes me hungry and I've had a hard time exercising). I decided last week to stop making excuses for myself and figure out how to be heathy. I'm addicted to sugar and am a manager at a coffee shop = free sugary coffee and pastries all day long. That right there is my biggest struggle. I've just recently started going to the gym and I'm excited about how great I already feel! I want to be a good example to my boys but more importantly I want to live long enough to see them have families! I've never tried to loose this much weight before, but I've never been this big before. I've been slowly puttting on weight for about 10 years. My ultimate goal? To be as skinny as I was when I thought I was fat.

Hi Ty! I used to skip meals a lot, I know exactly what you're talking about. My pattern was to eat a little breakfast -- coffee and [an energy bar, maybe], then skip lunch entirely, or perhaps eat a couple handfuls of nuts from my drawer, and then want to eat everything after I got off work and went home. And the food I wanted was always high calorie and high salt/fat/sugar -- often fast food. Then I had some medical news that scared the hell out of me, and I knew I *had* to change things, but I didn't know what to do, yo-yo dieting was not the answer.
I went to a medical weight-loss specialist for help, and they gave me some great advice. And one really important thing was not to skip meals. Part of my problem is that I really don't notice I'm hungry until I am really, REALLY hungry, and by then I am hangry and crazy and it is really easy to make bad food decisions. They helped me figure out how to plan my food in advance a little. So now I eat oatmeal often for breakfast, with yogurt or peanut butter in it to up the protein and help me stay full. I know what it is and where everything is, so no big decisions to make there. If I need to eat on the run, I eat protein bars now, not energy bars (I didn't realize there was a difference for a long time). They aren't ideal, but they work well enough. I also plan my lunch and get it ready, or close to ready, the night before, so I'm not rushing. And if the lunch thing doesn't work for some reason (like the day I forgot and left something perishable out in the sun for 4 hours) I have a plan B - Subway 6 inch turkey with deluxe meat and lots of veggies. It's filling and meets my calorie and protein needs. I am still sometimes hungry before I get home for dinner, but I usually eat a small snack (a serving of beef jerky is my current go-to) and that helps. What I really had to do, though, was choose to put myself first. I have to be important enough to myself to eat lunch, no matter how crazy my job is. I have to be important enough to myself to plan my lunches, etc. I still occasionally skip a meal, usually breakfast, but only if I've planned a morning off for myself on a weekend, and I am just planning to sleep in. If I'm really hungry, I eat. Otherwise, I eat a bigger lunch or dinner.1 -

I'm really trying to get my meals in and plan ahead. But I think it'll take time before it becomes a habit.2 -
My go-to lunch is chicken, broccoli and brown rice with a little lemon juice. But I love broccoli and wouldn't say I'm a particularly picky eater. Even over a month of having it almost every day feels like treating myself when I used to life off of canned and frozen foods. It's also really easy to make and doesn't taste bad at room temperature. I pack it on days I won't be home before 3.
Try it out sometime! You can cook the broccoli and chicken in a pan together, or throw a handful of breasts in the oven to last the week and microwave the broccoli if you wanted. (Don't forget to season the chicken though. Makes all the difference.)
It's a super easy meal to plan because every ingredient is so basic that it's easy to adjust the amounts to what you need. Also chicken is pretty much 100% protein. I've been messing around with cutting on the chicken and rice and increasing the broccoli for something with a little less calories.
Good luck Ty! I was in your same situation a month ago when I started and now it's starting to become natural to me! Also get a food scale and use measurement cups! It makes portioning so much easier. (I had no idea how much one person was supposed to eat, so I would just consume all at dinner haha.)1 -
