I live in Seattle, in Washington state, in the US Pacific Northwest. If you've heard of this place, you probably think of it as a rainforest. And you're right to. But it's a lot more complicated than that. Our Cascade Mountains run down the center of our state, split the weather, and create a vast desert on the other side. Sometimes we rain people like to go visit the land of sunshine.
To the east, there are more mountains. During the ice ages, glaciers would form in the Rockies and they would create a dam, and a lake behind it in Montana. Occasionally the dam would break and unleash a flood of biblical proportions. Those recurring floods scoured central and eastern Washington, leaving behind a network of coulees and erratics. We call this place the channeled scablands.

Dry Falls
During the floods, this had 10 times the flow of all today's rivers.

Flat is rare here, and this was downright unnerving.
