As martial artists who are also members of a WL and fitness website, it can be helpful for us to remain accountable to each other, and share training ideas.

Any time you participate in class, or practice out side of class, post here and let everyone know. You can write something as simple as "Went to sparring class... got my licks in", or get into as much detail on the practice as you'd like.

    Didn't get on to post yesterday, so will update now.

    Weekly black belt class - I was sick but couldn't stay away.
    30 min sparring
    Sat out rest of class, as the main focus was on self defense this week, and I didn't want to be hands-on and get my training partners sick.

    This week we did 3 beat (low block, punch front kick) practiced low and high block techniques. I used a pool noodle cut in half as a weapon to strike them with to simulate an attack without any fear of being hurt. This work well with young kids to help them gain confidence.

    Cool drill, Casey - I use a similar drill when I'm teaching.
    I also do a "4 zone" blocking drill - dividing the body up into 4 blocking zones, using the blocking stick (noodle or what have you) to simulate strikes in that zone, naming the zone before strike, then phasing out naming, and increasing speed over time - to allow newer students to train out the "flinch reflex".

    I also use pool noodles, but I have 3 kinds...
    1 - pool noodle by itself (beginners and kids)
    2 - pool noodle stuffed with PVC (intermediate and older kids)
    3 - pool noodle stuffed with wooden dowel (advanced and adults only)

    Hit with #1... No pain, no risk of injury, no problem.
    Hit with #2 ... You'll feel it, but definitely no injury.
    Hit with #3 ... Ouch. It may leave a bruise. Good for toughening up.

    #2 and #3 tend to last a lot longer as well.
