Does your school require any additional tests on top of the actual martial arts evaluations?

Other?

We have an oral component to every belt test, primarily testing their knowledge of Korean culture and history - as the student progresses in rank, their knowledge is also expected to progress. If a student is borderline in passing to the next rank, often the answers to the oral quiz may be the deciding factor for the judges.

In the instructor certification process, there is a written quiz, as well as an essay requirement.

We have recently added a physical fitness test for black belt testing. It consists of 14 exercises across several disciplines of fitness: Upper body strength, lower body strength, flexibility, speed, and endurance. To pass, each exercise must be completed to a minimum score, and there is a cumulative total which also must be passed. In this way, if you are weak in one area, but strong in another, you can still pass, assuming that you achieve the minimum requirements in all exercises.

Our TKD colored belt tests are pretty much just physical: An extended warm up. Paddle targets. Poomsae. Sparring.

Our Black Belt testing is four tests, plus a running endurance test, plus there is a work book/binder. There is a written test at the end as well. The binder involves hitting check marks for healthy eating, korean and TKD culture/language, etc. For a small additional fee our school offers registration with kukkiwon.

(Our intramural this fall will be associated with WTF which is the first time afaik)

From what I have heard, the KKW fees can get expensive when talking about Dan certificates.

First Dan registration cost my friend 140 dollars roughly 3 years ago. Our school is registered as a testing facility on the kukkiwon website, not sure if that makes a difference.

Not bad. I looked up the cost in Korea and it isn't as bad as I thought. I think the horror story is probably from a few schools with big mark ups. I havr heard some charge as much as 1k per degree.

We don't have any kind of formal test in general. The Coach promotes based on when he deems you ready so you never know when it is happening and you never know when you are just sparring with him or actually being evaluated.
