I went to competition today - first time competing in 25 years, actually!
Took first in forms and free sparing, men's open black belt division.
Will try and post some pictures later.

Awesome!! Congrats. I've done 2 tournaments, and at one, was the only one in my division. I had to fight someone 2 belt ranks above me, but I won.1

First? Awesome! Tell us more, particularly about the sparring!1

Belts are misleading. You can't tell someone's skill by their belt rank. A lot of times it comes down to conditioning.1 -
Congrats! Awesome work! It feels good to compete even better to win!1

Very true. I'm fairly fit, so had an advantage there. I'd probably do even better with free sparring, rather than point.1 -
super awesome. looking forward to seeing the pics!1

As promissed - some pictures..
I am wearing the all-white dobok.
Here's a few pics from one of the sparring matches. This 2nd dan - although a bit up there in years was very fast with his hands- was a good challenge! I ended up beating him 9 to 4. Both of the kicks (unfortunately didn't catch the timing right to get the connect) connected.
Still waiting for my daughter to upload her pics - I think she has some from the other match.

Tournament director decided to break up the black belt men 2 groups - I guess to give more people a chance to earn qualifying points for a large upcoming tournament... which was a bummer - less competition.
I had two matches. First one was against a 1st dan that I train with regularly - I think that he was a bit intimidated, as he usually puts up a better fight, but to be fair, he's never fought me for points before - everything up before this was just friendly matches. I beat him 14-5.
My 2nd match was against an older 2nd dan - his kicks did not pose much challenge, but his hands were very fast and very powerful, and he had very good defense. I beat him 9-4.
Forms was a closer match up - that was men/women combined - there was one competitor (black belt candidate) who was very talented, but did not command enough power in her technique to get top marks... I think in a year or so, she will be a fierce competitor.1 -
My experience with tournaments is similar, they favor making smaller brackets. Not sure if it's a time issue, or a courtesy issue. Largest bracket I've been in has only been 5. They'll split us up first by rank, and then by size.
So, awesome pictures, but they did not answer my one burning question...
is bwmalone korean?

I've been in large and small alike - they have their ups and down.. Small - more likely to get a trophy, you can put more effort into each match, it's not so much of an endurance-fest... but you also don't get as much competition.
Large divs - exact opposite.
My favorite division size is 8 - no by's, enough people to give you a real sense of climbing to the top if you win.
Korean... Here you go:
(though with a name like malone it seems unlikely I would be. LOL)2 -
Congrats on both BW! And that was your first time too, even more impressive!!1
