As martial artists who are also members of a WL and fitness website, it can be helpful for us to remain accountable to each other, and share training ideas.
Any time you participate in class, or practice out side of class, post here and let everyone know. You can write something as simple as "Went to sparring class... got my licks in", or get into as much detail on the practice as you'd like.
This post gets rebuilt every week, to remind us to approach each practice/training/class with a fresh perspective:
- It doesn't matter how hard you worked yesterday... what matters is what you do today.

10/16 - 3 hrs of BJJ while visiting a school; likely not my new "home" - too far from where I will probably live but good people & so much better than hanging out in a hotel room.
Lots of drilling of shrimping, oopa escapes, head lock escapes & then 5min rolling rounds.3 -
So glad to be back in class today. 2 more new members so after doing line drills the class was split in two. I got tons of practice on my form and 1-step.
My earlier, lunch workout was a core routine.2 -
Lower forms practice and lots of stretching... Legs are really tight tonight.1
-
More kata last night (my club is big on kata if that's not obvious!). Swimming is cancelled tonight so I can get to the gym and work on some strength and core later, it's been over a week since I last went and I've really missed it!1

Kata class last night. We learned how to defend from being hit in the head with a club. And probably because I mentioned it in the dreaded conditioning thread, we did static kicks. Best of all, I’ve finally got all of the moves for my current kata and just need to sharpen them.
It’s funny, I came home and showed my husband my new self defense move and he showed me how he learned to defend that in kung fu. He studied Kung fu for 2 years about 25 years ago and it’s amazing how much is just muscle memory for him.3 -
Monday 5k run; kickboxing class; lifting
Yesterday: 23k on bike; missed class due to work
Today: 5k run; noon kickboxing; lift; 6pm kickboxing class; 7pm boxing/kickboxing sparring1 -
Monday - rolling with a mom during kids class
Tuesday - beautiful techniques! My friend went to a Buschecha (how do you spell that?) seminar while on holiday in France and shared what she learnt with class. Honestly, if you do it properly, there is no defense for that arm bar (which is why he wins with it so often!)
Today - kids class again but rolled with the mom and a couple of the older girls (as per the bosses instructions!)
Very happy to notice myself maintaining a nice control point while my partner fights hard. It gives me a rest and wastes their energy.
Oh, and yoga on Tuesday. At my age, I need that to keep up with daily rolling sessions!3 -
Forms practice tonight. Decided to take my hardest form, and find the part I suck most at, and tear it apart to figure out what I am doing wrong. Learned a little bit about it and hopefully don't suck quite as bad now.0

Was great to be back at karate last night, really concentrated on basic skills for a bulk of the class. Which I feel I'm making some progress in, but it was very noticeable how the strength and stability differs in the two sides of my body. Injured my hip (over training running) last year and it's obviously still far from right. Must do more physio exercises (it feels alright and then you don't bother so much) namely eleventy billion donkey kicks and looking like a dog with a lamppost. I will not be defeated by a silly thing like a hip!!2

Last night's class was drills before getting split in half. I like being split off like this. We all get a lot more time to practice our forms and work on basics. Our class is so lopsided, belt-wise, splitting it in two works wonders. Very high belts, very low belts and not much in-between.
During some of the punching drills the instructor noticed I was holding my arms tightly into my body between punches. I think this is new for me. He's never mentioned it before. I'll have to watch that and figure out how to stop myself from doing that. Any suggestions?1 -
Did my sprint triathlon simulation this morning. .25 mile swim, 20k bike, 5k run. Needless to say, I'm going to be sore tomorrow. I was going to do night kickboxing class, but something came up. I'm no really heart broken about it today though.1

acrobatics class yesterday was light but we practiced what the teacher called "backwards cartwheels" which are like cartwheels done along the line of a large circle with your body arched in a reverse banana. it looks really weird but fun. i may take the evening off tonight because i'm dogsitting. will double up classes on saturday.1

Karate/Muay Tai blend class with lots of sparring tonight.1

Is this causing your shoulders to tighten and even rise up? If so, it's a fairly common problem, and one that limits hip involvement in punches and slows them down quite a bit too.
(assuming yes)
- consciously try to keep your shoulders loose, as tight shoulders will cause your whole upper body to tighten as well.
You may even try practicing while imagining yourself as a ragdoll, using only enough muscle to move your limbs, keeping all others completely relaxed... alternate, 5 punches regular, 5 punches ragdoll style, until you learn which muscles should stay relaxed.0 -
I think so, about my shoulders tightening. I'll have to try that. I hadn't thought about my shoulders. Thanks BW!0

Sun - ran 4 miles for Puerto Rico relief fund (ran another mile & then walked another mile); spent 2 hours practicing patterns & helping students going to local competition
Mon - rest day (legs shot from running Sat & Sun)
Tues - taught 2 TKD classes (1-hour each)
Wed - boxing 1-on-1 workout w/ trainer; ran 6 miles; walked 1.2 mile
Thurs - ran 5 miles; walked 1 mile
Fri - 2-hour (black stripe/black belt) TKD class
Sat - Long run (hoping 10 miles... maybe 12)2 -
Yesterday and today, forms practice.. working hard on dialing in my tournament form for next weekend. Tonight was probably the best it's ever felt. I can definitely tell I'm making progress!1
-
I had to miss open mat on Saturday sitting in the doctors waiting room with a swollen gave thanks to an infection (probably caused by a bark chip inhaled while cleaning animal enclosures). Luckily antibiotics have worked well so I should be back on the mat today or tomorrow.0
-
No fun - glad you are on the mend though, @Dory_421
-
45 min practice tonight.. what was planned as 30 minutes of basics and lower forms turned into a new drill to fix a problem with my round kicks... I'm going to share the love next week's black belt class - I can hear their hips screaming already.
Then did some really deep stretching. I'm working on some new stretching methods based on Elastic Steel's videos - this is day 2, and I'm really still quite sore!0 -
yikes @dory_42 i hope you are feeling better today!
saturday was 2 hrs of class with a bunch of kids. the first hour actually had many children and was mostly drilling. (i pat myself on the back for keeping up with 12 year old boys LOL) the 2nd hour was just 2 kids and me. it was all forms and everyone was getting yelled at. i made notes so that tomorrow i won't make the same mistakes.1
