G'day UAC'ers. It's mid month and how are you tracking?
(I'm still in my target weight range and doing fine on maintenance).
Had another topic prepared too, it's "Food for thought - What bad advice have you seen?"
Modern media bombards you with ABC are good foods, XYZ are bad foods, etc. Even the news here has a "health and medical" reporter that often gets nutrition information badly wrong (at least against what my research has turned up).
Probably the WORST advice I have seen is the classic food pyramid. (The following is aimed at kids and is a DISASTER in the making).
The end result will be:
Excess processed carbohydrate consumption seems to be the root cause of the Western obesity epidemic. Sugar, and most flours (wheat, corn, etc..) are highly processed carbohydrate (most fibre stripped out). These are easy to over eat, calorie heavy, long shelf life, highly profitable and heavily subsidised (ever wonder where the push for the food pyramid comes from ).
Fibre is the antidote to the harmful effects of carbohydrate. Every natural carbohydrate occurs with fibre. Take fibre without carbohydrate, no problems, to taking fibre with carbohydrate (Whole fruits and vegetables), no problem. Take carbohydrate with reduced or no fibre, big problems (satiety not triggered, blood sugar spikes, longer lasting elevated blood sugar, ect...)
For *most* people, if you substantially reduce processed carbohydrate consumption (ie. put breads, cereals and potato on the top of the pyramid with sugar and soda), then weight will just fall off till you get into the healthy BMI category.
One of the effective methods for controlling Type II diabetes is no GPS (grains, potatoes or sugars). Tip: Anything that is reduced fat is usually higher in processed carbohydrate which you do not want.
Fat (except trans fat) seems to have been given a bad wrap too. Trans fat (hydrogenation of oil - fat from frying) sabotages the bodies ability to manage LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). Fat does not metabolise directly into fats in the blood. It is broken down into fatty acids and glycerol. So eating natural fats does not seem to cause out of balance LDL cholesterol (and fatty deposits in the blood stream).
(I'll stop here, I could go on for weeks. I researched this for months reading hundreds of pub-med articles and trying to disprove my own assumptions).
What other bad advice have you seen?

@craigo3154 I couldn't agree more. Since I've ditched the empty carbs and focused on quality meat, fish, veg and legumes, plus a little Greek yogurt and some cheese (this is France after all!) I feel and look much better. Plus I'm losing weight. What's not to like!5

Exercised?: Yes. Walked 5 Km in 38 mins (hills).
Calories?: Yes. (Long way under today)
Tracked?: Yes.
Early walk (before the forecast afternoon rain).
Hopefully more later (in a late meeting).3 -
Exercise done hopefully more at lunchtime.
Myth buster I have to eat before a certain time or else it will all go to my hips. As long as I am in my calorie intake I can wait till I get home for dinner even if it means eating late.3 -

Pass Day 1
Allthough I was below calories if I count my excercise calories I like to stay below my allowance without counting the burn. Hence, the pass day.
Everything logged
Walk for 30 minutes and static bike 20 minutes.
As this is my first month in the UAC I'm not sure if this means I have failed?
Hope you have a good day/ evening all1 -
@dejavuohlala, there ain't no such thing as failure. Winners circle is the goal, er, one of the goals. But how about if we just keep patching our dietary behaviors until we keep getting better and better?
Tracking, tracking, tracking, that is how we do it. Middle of the month and only one pass. Hey, that is better than me.
There is people that been here for way longer than a month. They, we, don't make winners circle every month. Hey, nobody laughs and points at us and we keep on coming back. That is how that is.
But really I just wanted to put a picture of an Indian ruin. I like going outside to play. That is how I am.

Exercise - Yes, over 1hr walking inc. hills, into village and back.
Calories - Yes, including a glass of vin chaud at the local cafe.
Tracked - Yes
@dejavuohlala You have not failed (no such thing), you are still here posting and in fact are doing great! It's my first month here too, and I am finding the support and accountability very motivating. Look forward to reading of your successes in the coming days.

Still in a funk, but slightly better than yesterday. I'm strongly suspecting it's TOM related. I've been on mirena now for almost 5 years but it's clearly wearing off. I think maybe I've just forgotten how bad some of these symptoms can be. I've been really struggling with fatigue and low motivation for several months now, and I'm wishing I had better tracked it to see if there's a cyclical pattern. Regardless, might be time to see the doctor again.
No exercise yet today, but I have a kickboxing class at 7pm. My trainer is the instructor, so not even a chance that I'll blow it off.
Haven't logged today, but so far eating what was preplanned.5 -

Zumba in the morning. Tracking and I was not hungry at all today. More under than usual. I may eat more before bed. I agree that it doesn't matter when I eat. Even before bedtime is fine. Maybe because I workout first thing?
Tomorrow we leave the house at 5:30am for the my husband's procedure at the Cleveland Clinic. I won't workout first, but since he is staying over I can use their fitness center. If not, I usually stair climb and walk. He will be in surgery 5-8 hours.
My personal Pyramid has a big layer of fruits and vegs on the bottom, Then three equal layers of breads/cereals, dairy, and fish and meats, with a small layer of fats and sweets on top. It works for me, but I'm sure it is not for most people.1 -

Sheesh. I had written a response to @craigo3154's great question but not sure what happened.
Quick recap. My husband and I did the low fat diet for years. It started in 1994 when my mom had bypass surgery and we certainly did not want to get heart disease. Fast forward today. I have lost heart with all the claims of what the best diet is. Very overwhelming and confusing. Our diet is to eat everything but in moderation.2 -
It's Wednesday and I got 10,000 steps in today. My Garmin let me know this morning that my past Wednesdays show a pattern of low activity. I was so stunned. Yikes. I got on the treadmill and did almost 80 minutes of walking. My Garmin should have good things to report back to me next Wednesday. Yay!!1

There was an article in the NY Times this week saying that counting calories is bad for weight loss. Geez, it's the only thing that worked for me. When I don't log calories, my weight just keeps creeps up and up. Since I've been logging on UAC I've been losing since July, and now am at maintenance for the last month. So far so good.
Yes x 3 today. I didn't want to exercise after work, but figured I'd better for this challenge, and ended up walking 45 min. I feel better as a result.0 -
@120maggie Sending all good wishes to you and your husband, and fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.0
