As martial artists who are also members of a WL and fitness website, it can be helpful for us to remain accountable to each other, and share training ideas.

Any time you participate in class, or practice out side of class, post here and let everyone know. You can write something as simple as "Went to sparring class... got my licks in", or get into as much detail on the practice as you'd like.

This post gets rebuilt every week, to remind us to approach each practice/training/class with a fresh perspective:

- It doesn't matter how hard you worked yesterday... what matters is what you do today.

Light practice last night... I'm dealing with a pretty severe case of DOMS in my legs, especially my left leg.. and when that leg is weakened, it gives me an added bonus of knee instability, so I had to take it pretty easy.

Worked on relaxation and breath control during technique, and kept everything to ~50% power level... Ran through all colored belt forms, and did some conditioning with static kicks to work on my hip strength and try to work out some of the soreness, then did a lot of stretching.

Trained last night. Was hoping to make it to class tonight, as I'm pretty pepped about getting stuck into a new form, but sadly 'twas not to be. Messed around with some side-kick practice while making dinner and realised I still drop my knee a little while chambering, and then try to regain the height I've lost on the extension.

I'm cautiously hoping that fixing that will get my side-kicks up to the standard I want.

Oh boy, in my Monday night class...I was in rare form in a bad way. I could not concentrate to save my life. I couldn't even remember the name of or how many moves were in my form when my instructor randomly asked me. That really bothered me.

Thankfully I was back to normal in last night's class. We ended both classes with sparring. Last night I was able to do a roundhouse to my opponents head (didn't touch her head, I stopped just short of making contact). I was surprised! I've not kicked that high before without using some kind of support or tumbling out of balance. We are still not using any kind of sparring gear since he wants us newbies to continue focusing on control and technique.

Last night was sparring night so that the dan grades could get some refereeing practise. I surprised myself with a few good wins, and upset a couple of teenage girls (same grade as me right now but due to grade to 1st dan in the next month) by beating them both - one was particularly satisfying because she told me before the fight that she "wouldn't be going easy on me", and then stormed out of the room after my son beat her too ;)

I'm not sure how I feel about sparring right now, I feel like I'm getting slow but that may be because I'm expected to fight black belts now rather than lower grades, and my height/weight disadvantage is more obvious at this level. I suspect that what I'm needing is more sparring practise, but because I don't know whether I like sparring I'm not going to do that voluntarily!

Last Wednesday I was the only one who showed up for adult class, so I got to work on advanced techniques that are more appropriate for my belt level. Made me happy, and gives me new things to try when sparring.

    We went over:

body body body body head combos

    Lead leg head kicks

    Spin hook head kicks

    Lead leg hook head kicks

And a cut kick spin back kick combo that I plan on working on more

I had a great sparring class last night. There were several people there that usually come to class at a different time, so all of my matches with with people I've never sparred before. I'm still new enough at sparring that most of my partners dial it back for me and transition to teaching mode. I learn something different from each person.

I did take a kick to the center of my thigh and it's still uncomfortable today. Luckily it was at the very end of the last match...and luckily it isn't shorts weather so nobody will see my bruise. :p

Three hours of jiu jitsu this morning!!! So awesome.

Got to uki for Fundamentals class with my favourite black belt who is visiting (Coach knows I adore this boy, who just happens to be the top grappler in South Africa!!!). Open mat was spent training with one of the other girls who is competing in early December. I got her to practice starting standing to work on take downs (Which is a big thing for me as I am still nervous of take downs after my concussions. Definitely improving on that aspect.) I love comp prep, even when I am not competing. It pushes me harder and makes me want to get back to competition. Ended off the morning watching the previously mentioned favourite rolling with coach, so much fun to watch and learn from them. I love how my club is really a big family (especially with the number of toddlers we were dodging all morning, but its a happy and safe place for all the family!)

Got to class 4 times Mon-Thu which was awesome and have been consistent in journalling what I am learning. Getting better at applying it all as well.

on sunday I did a 2 hr class with a bunch of kids. it was hard and fun. my legs are so sore today. My first 3 forms are getting a lot better and more comfortable. But as a beginner - what I wish I looked like vs what i actually do is totally different lol! I also started on a poster design for my coach for trade of extra classes and he seemed pretty excited about what I have so far :)
