Ball of foot pain in left foot

Wondering if any of you have ever had this and if so how did you manage it? I just got new shoes - Mizuno Wave Catalyst - so have been breaking them in for a little while now. I went on a 6 mile run the other day and noticed the middle of the pad of my left foot became sore after I past the 4 mile marker. If I adjusted my stride by putting more pressure on my left toe it would lessen enough to not notice it. The same thing happened on a shorter run yesterday - just my left foot. The pain goes away when I stop running and I have no issue on shorter runs. Do you think it is just that I need to break in the shoes more? Or could it be I have the wrong shoes? I can return these within 90 days for a new pair. Thing is I had Mizunos before with no issues - even ran a half marathon and no foot pain.

Running shoes don't need to be broken in like a leather shoe.
How does the drop of these shoes compare to your previous Mizunos (or other running shoes)? What about pronation support? Shoe manufacturers make a wide variety of shoe types so while one model of Mizunos may be great, another model with different support or perhaps even a different drop could cause problems. See if you can find out how the build of your new shoes compare to shoes you've used in the past. Perhaps you need to go back to the old model.
Another thing to try is to shorten your stride. You want your foot to land underneath your hips, not out front. Depending on your stride, this could make a difference. It will certainly lessen the impact on your body.

Thanks 7lenny7, I guess I didn't do my research well when considering the newer shoe model because my new shoe has a 10mm drop and the old are 14.8mm. I didn't think that would make a difference. The stability of both shoes is the same but the main difference is the width around the toe, the new ones are a bit tighter but still roomy. I have to put arch supports in all my shoes, have never found any that have high enough supports built in.
I will focus on my stride the next few runs and adjust my arch support on the left side and see if it makes a difference. If not, I will return them and opt for a shoe model closer to my old pair. It just seems odd that only one of my feet has this weird pain when I run!0 -
Just an update in case anyone cares to know how this turned out. I returned my shoes and got another pair, this time for a neutral stride. The ball of foot pain disappeared after about two runs. However my right arch will get sore now at the beginning of my runs. So I went and got a gait analysis and discovered a couple of things. 1. I have been wearing a size 8 and need to wear a 8.5 and 2. I have high arches of which the right one is slightly higher than the left (ha!). They confirmed I have a very stable foot with a neutral gait. I was also told my feet are slightly narrow. Tried on some shoes but didn't buy any. They recommended Asics, Mizuno and Brooks. So looks like I have been buying the right brand of shoes at least!
I was so impressed I got my husband to get a gait analysis and he ended up with a brand new pair of Brooks Levitate. Currently I am happy with my Asics Gel-Venture 6s even if they are a half size too small.0
