Class and Practice Check in - Week of 1/29/2018

As martial artists who are also members of a WL and fitness website, it can be helpful for us to remain accountable to each other, and share training ideas.

Any time you participate in class, or practice out side of class, post here and let everyone know. You can write something as simple as "Went to sparring class... got my licks in", or get into as much detail on the practice as you'd like.

This post gets rebuilt every week, to remind us to approach each practice/training/class with a fresh perspective:

- Do today what others won't, tomorrow do what others can't.

Attended class tonight. Still trying to take it easy, so only did a medium length class. I'm aiming to attend three nights in total this week.

One hour class last night at karate, I got to lead the warmup as the highest ranked member in the class. All the new kids I've been helping to teach for the last couple of months turned up in gis for the first time this week, it's lovely seeing how much more confident they all look when they put the suit on for the first time (I still feel like that every time I put my gi on!).

No weapons class tomorrow so I won't be training now until Thursday. I may test my calf on a small jog at the gym tonight.

    Tuesday
    I instructed class.
    Worked with white belt
    We broke boards.

Many were gone because of sickness. Need to work on increasing class size. Made goals with other black belt to set test date in June to test for 4th degree black belt.

Attended session last night, helped teach the kids' class because the Master had some precancerous stuff removed from his face and apparently looked like Rocky Balboa. Adult class was a little frustrating because the instructor decided to concentrate more on a physical workout than karate. Having a test on Sat, I would have rather focused on forms and techniques...

Went to third class of the week and had my first sparring class of the year. It was amazing to spar without feeling my foot throbbing with every step.

I'm pretty hyped up and excited by all this so obviously I desperately want to attend tomorrow. Sadly, I know I mustn't risk overdoing it. Argh. Rest days are so hard to abide by when you feel less injured.

I was in DC for work and just getting over a cold but Wednesday morning I attended a class in Washington. Trained Thursday but my cough came back with a vengeance. Taught kids class yesterday and about to head out to teach kids class and get a few rolls in if my cough stays away. I am post viral so not contagious but still struggling with symptoms.

I did a pretty good job sticking to calorie counts on the road but less so once I got home. A big thing for me is going to bed early because it prevents late night binges. I am also on a social media hiatus which makes me more likely to go to sleep early since I am not up all night online.

Yesterday was a circuit training session. 2 minutes at each station using various equipment - both traditional and modern. It was hectic! I could barely move after that! I discovered that I am still useless at hoola hoops and pull-ups; and not to skip under a clip in light fitting with a low ceiling. I think I bring something down every time I use a jump rope in the dojo. They never learn!

Pretested for 2nd degree yesterday. Good test, and only a few notes from the Master judging me re: technique improvement. Only downside is a gnarly bruise/ possible break on my middle finger from holding a board for a fellow tester. Spinning hook kick that would have shattered the board if he hadn't missed low! Shouldn't be too bad to recover, it's in s good spot. Turning fun colors!

@kellypence Congrats on a good pretest - and YOUCH. BTDT - mine was a nasty break, might want to get an x-ray, as compression breaks may have to be splinted (mine had to be splinted for 6 weeks) to prevent loss of range of motion.

Black belt class yesterday - spent a portion of the class discussing the recent physical test, which recently changed standards, discussing training strategies, and pros/cons of the new test, then on to self defense, where we worked on a knife scenario, where I reinforced to myself yet again that knife defense will always end up with cuts.. just sometimes you get to pick where they happen.

Then on to some great sparring. Always good times!

Thanks @bwmalone. Luckily I'm a physical therapist and I work with some hand specialists. Keeping an eye on it.

Sometimes we train Knife scenarios with Sidewalk Chalk as a knife, it leaves actual marks where you got hit. It opens a lot eyes about knife defense

@trackercasey76 I think any knife training without marker/chalk training is questionable at best - as you said, it really opens eyes.
