BJJ Newbie Question

I have a newbie question. My son in law is so excited that I am going to classes because BJJ is pretty much his life. He is sponsored by AP and is sending me some gis. I feel like if I wear them during my classes when I am literally just learning the very basics, I will look ridiculous. If and it's a big if I ever do a competition, I would wear them then but not now. Am I overthinking this? I haven't even live grappled yet.

The general advice in this kind of situation is probably not to worry what other people are thinking and all that, but I'm not going to say that, because it's never, ever made me feel less self-conscious when I've had a concern like this.

So... while you wait for more specialised advice from someone who actually does BJJ, I'd say to consider the culture of your class. Take a look around you- what are the people on a similar level to you wearing? Do the more senior students prefer to practise with people in Gis or otherwise?

I know where you're coming from, tbh. At the martial arts school I go to, all students have to wear uniform through the club. Students are given a free white wraparound gi when they sign up, and you have the option of buying additional uniforms: perhaps another white gi or the more expensive slip-over-head V-necked uniform in the club colours. I angsted over whether I could buy one of those for absolute months, because I felt it just wasn't appropriate to buy and wear the same uniform all the senior students at my level.

@HeliumIsNoble That's how I feel - like I really need to earn that right.

It's a worry, no doubt about it.

You should probably ask your son-in-law, you know. He sounds like a good egg, and successful martial arts instructors are generally people who want to know about worries like this. He'll be able to talk to you about this.

Two final things though; firstly, your son-in-law's going to have to have the best insight into what's socially appropriate in BJJ and what's not, because he's lived and loved BJJ long enough as a student in someone else's school to get to his current level, and now he runs his own school, with his own beginners. And HE sent you some gis to welcome you into BJJ.

Secondly, these days I'm an upper grade myself at my school, and it has just occurred to me that I spend zero time judging newbies for buying the more expensive, more practical uniform straight away.

In our club we really don't judge the newbies who aren't in a gi but our class is a gi class and that means that some moves can't be done without a gi. If I have a friend visiting I will actually lend them one of my gi's so they find it easier to feel like they belong. We also love celebrating with people who get their first gi, whether it is a fancy expensive one or a hand me down. You learn gi Jiu Jitsu best in a gi, so I would wear it! The belts and stripes denote your rank and those are earned.
But it is also about your clubs style. If you are unsure, ask one of the senior belts at the club what is appropriate for you.

I don't think anyone would care honestly. I take a beginner class and there has never been more than 5 people there. It is a BRAND NEW gym, only three weeks old. The instructor came to this gym from a different one and people just don't know it exists yet. It's nice because I get almost one on one instruction. I wanted to take classes before but they were so far away from me that I couldn't make it work. This is five minutes door to door from my house. Plus, it's a full service MMA gym complete with a boxing ring, MMA cage, crossfit (they don't call it cross fit but it really is) box...they have regular gym equipment too, yoga, cycling and all classes are included in the cost of membership. I can go to unlimited grappling, BJJ, cardio kickboxing, yoga, boxing - all for the cost of the gym membership. My son goes to the powerlifting classes.

I doubt anyone would care. As long as your Gi is clean, in my experience no one cares what brand Gi you are wearing. Most folks are worried about their own training to be judging folks on their attire. Wear the Gi with pride and go have fun!
