@molly3210 your strategy sounds good - that is what I do and sometimes I bank a few exercise calories as well. So long as you are still exercising control you should do fine.2

exercise - yes lunch time walk
calories - yes just barely
logged - yes1 -
@trimi1104 You are always an inspiration to me!
@molly3210 it is NOT a slippery slope to wisely choose to spend a Pass Day for a holiday. Family relationships are important too. Cheat days are different in that they destroy discipline. Normal Big holidays are relatively infrequent: your birthday; wedding anniversary; Thanksgiving; Christmas...4 -
My first day back:
Calories: way under as I strive to regain my normal balance
Tracking: easy as I ate very little
Exercise: downtown Chicago city walking3 -
12/19
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? ✅ (Treadmill/Elliptical/Walk)
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? ✅
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? ✅4 -
@molly3210 Your plan sounds solid to me.
I look at Thanksgiving as an opportunity to practice something that will recur multiple times through the year ... and over the years to come, since this new health routine really doesn't have an "end point".
I need to learn to incorporate celebrations without having them become a launch pad to unhealthy choices after the special occasion is over.4 -
Did I exercise at least 20 minutes? Yes - 20 minutes on the mini-trampoline
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes

It's Monday, November 19, 2018. Today is the day that I crawl back up on the horse and get back in the UAC saddle.
I'm tired. I've definitely not had tracking of calories nor exercise on my mind since last week. But, today, it's time to look forward and regain my balance.
Let's ride!

Welcome back @RangerRickL - yes, I missed you, too, but was glad you were taking time. Hugs.
People who have lost weight with CICO and consistent dicipline...what did you do differently during holidays? Anything at all?
Let me know if this is a slippy slope: I'm thinking of adjusting my calories for holiday events, to TDEE maintenance amounts instead of eating at my standard daily deficit. Also eating exercise calories back on those days. There are so many meals planned with different sides of the family, we do everything twice, plus some milestone birthday parties this year... my goal would be to "do no harm" in those days, and continue to eat at a big deficit on the other majority of days.
Any advice is welcome!
Hi @molly3210!
Focusing on my loved ones, not the food. Will be at a buffet (best for relative with Alzheimer’s), so I can’t eat (germs). I will eat at home before & after.
I’m used to it; family is used to it. I’m the healthiest I’ve been. Food is fuel.
Do you remember what you had at Thanksgiving 6 years ago? Me neither. Food is transitory.
I have built a habit of really concentrating on my food when I eat. I have noticed that I can’t do that when I’m in a large gathering. So I don’t register what I’ve eaten and then I’m tempted to eat more. I know this is not for everyone else, but it’s a solution that works for me. I am so grateful to have had a living donor kidney transplant and I will do everything in my power to keep myself as healthy as possible. And in fact, my love ones want me to do this too!
Food is not love.
MFP has had a big hand in my decoupling food from celebrations...because as we all post, I saw trends & patterns...
Bear with me...
*Thanksgiving
* Stress & business of holidays
* Winter holiday parties, baking as gifts, Family dinners, problematic family relationships/grieving those who have passed/ill
* New Year’s Eve
* post holiday letdown
* cold weather-unable to exercise
* Valentine’s - candy
* Easter - candy, dinners
* Memorial Day weekend parties
* Summer vacations
* too hot to exercise
* Summer BBQ’s/beer
* 4th of July Parties
* really too hot to exercise
* Labor Day BBQ’s
* Back to School new routines/stress
* Halloween - candy
Whew!
And I saw people who really want to lose weight and did a good job, but with all of these events, even if you only eat 1000 cal more, you’re really disrupting your progress and then it’s easy to start thinking you’ll never do it and fall back into old habits. So I just decided to de-couple it.
I decide when I put in my mouth & do not let “Celebrations” disrupt my health goals AND HAPPINESS! I ♥️ being at ease in my body. I ♥️ that my clothes look better on me & I can easily (and more cheaply) find things that fit. I love being able to be active.
If this helps even one person, I’ll be happy.

I’m tempted to delete what I just posted. As I said, it’s not going to appeal to everyone. But I really don’t like feeling “full” anymore & I don’t like having to get “back in the groove” afterwards.
It’s all about trade-offs I suppose.4 -

No exercise. So that was a pass day, the 3rd :-(
No excuse on the exercise. Just didn't feel like moving. Sad.

I lucked out on the calories front. I had planned for a birthday cake slice for a cousin but he ended up not being in town.

I try to walk 5 miles on sundays. I am quite slow so really that's when I have the time.

No exercise
But OK on calories
Tracked everything.
My goal for december is to be more consistent in my exercise. I'll definitely need that extra boost during the holidays.5 -

Sooooo good with the advice, thank you!
"Don't derail progress by 'cheating' " and "don't allow celebrating to become a launch pad to unhealthy decisions" hit home big time. At the same time, use the pass days when it's worth it, just not as an excuse to go nuts.
Additional exercise is a great idea, I can certainly incorporate that!
I liked @MadisonMolly2017 suggestion of eating something beforehand, will definitely help! Its true that once you're at an event it's much harder to track and easier to overdo it without realizing. Even if I eat at maintenance, it can only take me so far because I'm short, lol. So it's not a pass to go crazy unless I'm willing to derail hard work.
The takeaway is that I'll need to be intentional with the choices at these gatherings. Absolutely cannot be mindless in the food part. I'll feel more confident even having a plan for the holidays. I've never done that before. Aiming for December NSV to be on track with weight loss due to my "holiday attack plan"!
Thanks everyone!!

Thank you @trimi1104
Over the past few years, I’ve slowly realized all the things I assigned to overeating & restaurant food - it’s been similar to peeling back layers of an onion...
Self-care
Relaxation
Reward
Comfort
Companionship
Love
Feeling Important (ego)
Feeling cared for
Way to get happy
