A different sort of 4th this year for everyone I imagine. Town cancelled fireworks (usually a huge display with folks coming from surrounding towns) but a neighborhood cop apparently held his own 25 minute skyrocket show last night. Tired from hiking I had just settled into bed at 9 (been getting up at 5 every morning) when the booms started. Then the guy downstairs started playing his saxaphone on his balcony--the Start Spangled Banner, When the Saints, Fly Me to the Moon, on and on. I gave up and just got up and watched the show from my window...

Hike yesterday was fun, and no mosquitoes surprisingly. Nice forest and big lily ponds and the river. Went 3 miles; kids started to stall out near the end, but DD took them for milkshakes somewhere after.

Have a good 4th. Watch the portion sizes on the barbecue and smoker. God bless the USA.

    Happy 4th gents.

Iron Man Dave. Impressive mileage at any age.

Looks like the board walk needs a little TLC, Mike.

Homebody today. Hitting the salt with fishing buddy tomorrow.

    Be OP ;-)

    Good morning gentlemen.

    Two threads. Which to choose?

Happy Independence Day. Also, happy Philippine/American Friendship Day.

Staying home. It will be a quiet 4th for us. Could hear a lot of fireworks last night. Interesting, since it is illegal, here. Hope the police are out enforcing the law, tonight.

    Happy Independence Day, Gents!

The perched tents and protestors around our Government buildings here in DC, blocking major roads and intersections is quite ironic. What a crazy time we are living. This isn't protesting - this is anarchy rising. I digress.

Hot, sunny, and humid today. Perfect trifecta for pool time.

    Cheers,
    Skip

    Good Morning

Happy Independence Day. Quiet day with just the family. A little baking with DW in the morning and some grilling in the evening assuming we aren't in divorce court. I don't play nice in the kitchen. Beautiful day here. Fireworks are illegal here, but the police don't do squat.

    My rant today:
I'm afraid if protesters get their way our freedom will also go, cannot understand why so many believe socialism will be better than what has kept this nation going for so many years. Will go to local government meeting Monday where some from outside the county have filed complaints wanting some monuments taken down. Guess next they will want old antebellum homes torn down because they were built using slave labor.
It happened, it is part of our history we all need to live with it and learn from it.
Just as I am 50% Creek Indian, family driven off North Carolina land back in 1840's; went down into swamps of South Georgia to keep from being driven to OK. Captured and made to do slave labor till after the Northern Aggression where grandparents became sharecroppers on a black owned plantation. Much of this is no longer seen in history books. Just as so many believe the war was because of slavery; folks have died and passed away so guess folks believe they can say anything they want about what happened 155 years ago. I remember stories told by ancestors on both sides of families; each had a different view, mother English decent and father native American. Grandparents and great aunts and uncles had much wisdom. Most whites came to this country with nothing and became indentured servants to pay their way; after a period of time they were free to start their life; many blacks were treated the same. Per history professor, Dr. Kemp, according to census there were approximately 14 million blacks at time of civil war yet less than a million were enslaved. Emancipation came about as punishment from a Republican president to hurt the Southern States for trying to withdraw from the Union. One may ask why the southern states wanted to withdraw, one only needs to look at tax structure and tariffs passed back then. Northern Aggression, Civil War, North vs South what ever one wants to call it came about because of money and some states trying to one up another.
I know some have different opinions and that's what makes this country GREAT, but history is what it is unless someone tries to distort it for their benefit.
