So wait "there is a declutter notebook?!!!!!!!

I know!!! Why haven’t I thought about this!?? What a great way to see how far you’ve come and what’s next on the decluttering agenda! Thanks, @texasgardnr!

Yesterday I was almost halfway up the stairs when I decided to turn around and do another pantry shelf. I think some of those spices may be beyond being old and are close to being ancient, but how do you know? I have started to write the date on any new spices I buy, must have started that in 2016. That’s one way to know how long I’ve had them.

I’m done going through videos and will now make folders to sort them into categories for easier finding.
    Step one complete✅

@nebslp oh I hear you on the spices. My Dad turned me on to Pensys spices a long time ago and I love all their varieties. But I fear some of mine are way too old also. But a good declutter effort on that for sure!

My effort today focused on one of my dresser drawers. it was random and unplanned. #1 I have a lot of winter jogging leggings in there and I keep forgetting I have them. One benefit of no longer just buying out of mind on Amazon is that I have discovered I already have what I need. Kind of like someone unnamed and the iron situation. >:)

I was actually looking for a different bathing suit top to sunbathe in and came across this gem which fits SO well and is so comfy. So killed two birds with one stone.

All Points Bulletin still out for Missing Iron!

However, my previous winnowing organization of sewing notions/supplies Is paying off SO WELL!

Was about to place an order for some supplies, and found I owned several of them already - Happy Maddie!

@SummerSkier Your top is very cute and you look great in it! Enjoy the new finds.

Today another random stop by the pantry led me to clean up the top two shelves. There's not much there because I can only reach the lower one with a stepstool and the top one is almost impossible. But I got it done and it took no time at all. I do have about 200 brown sandwich bags that I have no idea what to do with. It was fun making luminarias with them in New Mexico a couple of years ago, but now what???? Then something spoke to me about my silverware drawer. I didn't think it would be bad but wow!!! it was a mess. The front always looks fine but behind the silverware caddy is about 8 inches of stuff. I did put a lot of it back but now there are about 50 twist ties where they belong...in the garbage, and I washed out the caddy so the silverware stains have all disappeared. So a good declutter day in the kitchen :)

A preschool or kindergarten teacher would love the brown bags for puppet making and/or bags for students to decorate for Valentines card exchanges. They could also use them to “wrap” any holiday gifts they have students make for parents (stamped with a design the create out of half a potato & paint)!!

    Gosh I miss teaching... ❣️

@MadisonMolly2017 What a great idea! I have 3 grandkids in elementary school so I'm sure one of their teachers would claim the bags if I asked. Thanks for the suggestion.

.... But over the week I managed to clear it out and pull all the grass runners out. Unfortunately the Red Barn nursery down the street from me moved so I have not yet figured out what will be planted there. In the spring I always get chives which were seeded in the 80s! (I have lived here since 91 and get them every year by the rose bush.
    pmfj9rdrwopi.png

Well I finally figured out what to put here and this weekend is the time. I received my Iris bulbs from White Flower Farm and I am excited to prepare this bed a little more and put them in. They are not leafless either so I have hopes that the squirrels will leave them alone. Last night I started aerating the bed a little and will do some more before I plant. I do have some chicken wire square which I will also put around it "just in case". Now I am already looking forward to spring and the beautiful blooms we will have. This area gets good sun and I have grown glads here before so I am sure the iris will like it.

    L'shanah tovah u'metukah.
Please, may this be a sweeter year.

So I thought I would put 2 notes here. One for @nebslp and one for the group in general.

Here is a series of photos of the "white" flowers. Angel trumpet, Devil's trumpet top left and right then my moonflower which is actually a white morning glory which blooms at night and the "moon" flower which is a brother to the devil's trumpet and which blooms at night but is not like the white morning glories I have had in the past.

    6gcuaijwiflj.png

and then the before and after of the Iris planting.

    Quick update
Continuing to organize sewing supplies now that I am incorporating that into my art practice more. Working up a plan to have all the things I use for that in one area.

I have successfully set up an ironing/cutting area. I do need to get a new ironing mat (leaning towards that) or board. Seems the mats are not waterproof though...

I began moving the contents of my art filing cabinet downstairs today (this was a 3-step process) that I won’t bore you with. Deciding on location for filing cabinet before we bring it down!

Keeping my art table & other work areas neat is quickly done now & definitely encourages me to use them the next day!

I hope you all are doing well! I use the trick of “just 5 minutes...” - works well - as does listening to upbeat music!!

Lovely update... I have an extra ironing board somewhere in my junk room I think... LOL.. I rarely iron anymore either but I am guessing you use it for your sewing and art endeavors.

The just 5 minutes thing is how I managed my run today. A bit grumpy for some reason (no sun for a few days maybe and wilting like a flower) I tell myself just do 30 minutes. And then when I get to that I say why not do 3 miles.... etc etc etc... It's funny I did not have these mental issues when I could NOT run due to my knee but now every single excuse in the world seems to float in my head. hahahaha..

I haven't done any decluttering really the past few days/weeks but eventually the worm will turn and I will be back at it a little.

@SummerSkier Flowerbeds are looking good. I have so much I want to move around but with the surprise poison ivy attack, I'm a little bit nervous to venture back in. It's been there all summer but I will definitely be hunting it down and removing whatever I find.

@MadisonMolly2017 I have a cutting mat/ironing board that I got at Joann's Fabrics that doesn't take up much space and is really handy. I use the ironing board ALL the time and a different cutting mat but I take it with me when I travel. I'll try to post a picture of it in a bit.

Today I spent at least 4-6 hours going through my daily planner for the year (since July 2019). I wanted to remember some things so I wrote out the meaningful events and it took 4 sheets of paper on both sides. That was quite a reduction from the 100+ papers that went into recycling. I like looking back to see when I was making certain things and visiting or babysitting or whatever so I couldn't just toss them. It's like a diary of sorts. I also have a section called "Grateful For" and one for "On My Brain" that are part of the daily plan sheets. Those were really fun and insightful. Now I can start filling my notebook again with new ones.

today's declutterfest runner style was me getting a wild hair and deciding to clear up the pile of shoes and socks and shorts and shirts etc in getting ready for the season change. I have several pairs of shoes which I rotate and oddly enough all of them right now are nikes. I kept only finding LEFT socks to wear so that really needed some attention. Here is the current stable on top of 2 bins which have things like scissors, molex, bandaids, shoe inserts, and will have the socks (once they come out of the washing machine!)

For some reason I seem to be able to attack house work and declutter the last week of the month like a mad women vs staying at a steady rate thru out. But it is what it is and I will accept all motivation and wild hairs without looking back... LOL. B)

My notebook is just a simple spiral bound notebook that is sold at bargain prices when it is back to school time. I scotch taped small Post-it notes through out the notebook on the top corner of various pages and labeled them for rooms/ areas/ or kinds of clutter as I continued decluttering during the spring of 2019 declutterfest and beyond. And I have continued to use it and add new areas since then. I write only general notes to help me know what section or drawer for instance, that I worked on so I can revisit later and know that it had a first or second pass through already, or know where I stopped during that session. I definitely do not list everything that is given away, donated, or trashed. Those are history!!

@MadisonMolly2017 wrote: "decluttering ebbs & flows for most of us! I’m finding shifting from that to cleaning to organizing & back keeps it fresh! "

    So true and well said!

I never knew there were combination cutting. pressing mats! Somebody was resourceful and came up with a solution to reduce stuff in a sewing or multi use creative room or space!

Thank you to everyone who recently shared photos!! Loved them, especially the flowers!!

Are we still looking for the missing socks? Or iron?

or perhaps... Waldo? 😲 (do you know Waldo has been looked for over and over again for over 30 years! I learned this from a book blurb on Amazon when I wanted to make sure I spelled his name correctly. A 30th Anniversary book was published in May of 2017!

@nebslp I Googled answers to your question: "I think some of those spices may be beyond being old and are close to being ancient, but how do you know? I have started to write the date on any new spices I buy, must have started that in 2016. That’s one way to know how long I’ve had them."

I found some interesting as well as informative answers to your spice question. Enough that I'm leaving it up to each one to research the question if anyone is currently wanting answers when decluttering their spice cabinets.

However, I wanted to share this tidbit of trivia (or information 🤦‍♀️) that I came across

    "Do Spices Expire?

The brand states that if you see "Baltimore, MD" printed on your McCormick spice label, that spice is at least 25 years old. Now that's some old spice in your spice cabinet. Current McCormick spices will read "Hunt Valley, MD" because that's where they are currently manufactured. Additionally, McCormick hasn't used rectangular tins for herbs and spices in 25 years, so if you have any of those lying around, go ahead and toss 'em because yes, spices do expire."

    from https://wideopeneats.com/mccormick-spices-expire/

Note: This page has some other information about spices further down, that some may be interested in. It is dated March 2020 so at least it is a newer page.

    This is SO fun!!!

@texasgardnr Now I will be making another pass through my spice box hunting for Hunt Valley :D Thanks, great info to remember. I started putting dates on some of my spices awhile back but only sporadically...lot of good that does! I have also started putting dates on my thread when I buy it, too. I know I have some that may be 40ish years old???!! I will be using questionable threads on my practice pieces. Keeping a notebook update is a great idea for documenting decluttering. That is one of the few notebooks I never started! I have about 30 post it notes scattered all over my table right now, so I do like them, maybe a little too much :#

BTW I may have an stray black or white or gray sock to share if "someone" is still looking for one.

    September 15

This day I focused on what I called in my notebook 'general paper'. That is my nebulous term for paper that just seems to collect, and creep around, and hang out in random places, especially where my buddy P. Tiger hunkers down and becomes quite invisible for the most part (🌿🐯🌳). I have no other notes for it so I'm certain it means that I went about looking on flat surfaces or in my 'basket' and other other places in my home that attracts paper. I also listed mail, periodicals, and miscellaneous papers and shredding. Mail would only be 3 days at most, if even that, since I noted nothing paper wise on Monday and we just had a weekend. Thankfully mail has not been a real issue for me since I learned how to deal with it in my early FlyLady days.
On Tuesday/Friday mornings I often go around looking quickly for anything that I can put into my bag for recycling paper. Those days are my area's trash pickup days and I use that fact to remind me to check for stray paper or flyers etc of any kind. It is easy to surmise that I captured said papers and shredded some also.

    September 16

Notes say first pass through "saved important papers" in the banker box, which would be beside the file cabinet where I put files or mini piles of paper that I had been uncertain as what to do with them at that time, or just not ready to work through them yet. Or they are files removed from the cabinet that need a second look through before declaring a first pass completed and ready to be returned. Sometimes I need to create some distance, and in doing so I often achieve some clarity of mind the second time I look through them. Notes said that I put aside about 1/2 of them to be shredded, tomorrow, while doing a quick recheck of my decision to shred at that time. Again, I gave myself space to make certain that I made good decisions to shred these papers. Often times when I do this I will peek back through the paper that went back into the file and sometimes rethink a few of them... and off to the shredder they go (just when they thought they were safely hidden in the file 😆😱)

    September 17

    Notes: "Lots of shredding"

    September 18

Notes: Bills, mail, paperwork, purge & shred

    September 19

Notes: Miscellaneous paper decluttered, and shredded

    September 23

I had watched on YouTube recently where the woman said that when decluttering a lot of paper she had several categories planned, with spaces devoted to each category, such as creating a dedicated pile, a box, a bin etc, where she would place each paper into its own category.

I made that concept work for me by writing with a bold black marker on pieces of white notebook paper 😁 📄 my categories, and then spreading them the width of my empty table that I can now use as my workspace. Thus, instead of taking each individual paper to completion, I would now separate the whole pile/ folder into my categories. Then I would deal with each category as a unit! Like an assembly line worker working on one piece of the car. I'd be focused on only that category after sorting.

My categories were 1. 'Keep for filing' (wherever it is supposed be filed), 2. 'Keep for filing: 'insurance related', (this paper will have various names of the file as time goes on- cross out the current word insurance and then write new file name. (This category is only for whenever I might be focusing on one sort of paper to file). 3. Action needed (phone call, mail etc). 4. Recycle. 5. Shred.

    September 24

    Sort, save, shred (Medical papers)

    September 26 and 28th

These were the days when I was going over those old files that needed both my husband and I to go through together, and when the unexpected 'part two' of my mid month NSV happened.

    Digital decluttering.

    September 29

Shred and act on miscellaneous paper

    October 2

Sorted neighborhood newspapers, inserts & coupons, mail and various papers from the past several days and my Friday hunt for any loose (🌿🐯🌳). (maintenance paper (declutter) day).

Fantastic @texasgardnr !! I love so many of your strategies!!

Today, I had a fun experience. My husband & I decluttered & organized our kitchen Dec 2015. We’ve been doing some more in there (mostly pantry) recently.

This morning, I walked into the kitchen with no intention of working on it, and by the time I’d finished making my breakfast, I’d pulled all “cold cooking utensils & my food scale, etc) out of an overcrowded large drawer, vacuumed the debris & washed & sanitized it twice.

After breakfast, I tossed one old brush For brushing with oil (we have a new one) & places some duplicate items in a lower drawer. Got a bunch of old cardboard low boxes (from cat food cases) & organized the items with No overcrowding, by category.
And here’s the best time, the next 3-4 times I was weighing my food today, I’d smile SO WIDE when I opened that drawer. Everything easily located & returned.

    Extremely rewarding.

In addition, Last night, I couldn’t find a colored pencil I needed. I was pretty upset as I take good care of them. So after the drawer, I got out a box of overflow colored pencils...and I had an e tea of the one I needed!! I’m not consolidating all of them in one place!

    I tell you...this is addictive 🤣😀

WOW Maddy and Mary!!! You are both decluttering fiends!! So impressed.

Yes we are still looking for a missing black running sock and the iron. of course. We can add Waldo if need be. ;)

Today's decluttering took on a "do it yourself" theme for me. I am terrified of heights. Always have been. But... I also refuse to pay hundreds of $$$ for someone to trim a limb or two off the roof for me. So it was really bugging me scrapping against the roof and gutter so I pulled out my ladder and did it. I don't have a chain saw so it was a stop gap measure but trimming the smaller limbs off of the one hitting the roof and gutter took enough weight off I hope that there will be some reprieve in the next storm. I also have had some dry wall failure in my garage and there were 2 hanging chads which were right over my car. Because I did not know when they might fall I had been throwing an old blanket over the hood and windshield to protect the car for the past couple weeks. Today I clambored onto the hood of the car (I finally realized I could probably reach it like that. duh) and pulled the chads down and now tada. 2 miserable things I have been just living with are done.

Now if someone could send a plumbing fairy..... ;)

And I am not sure but I think the spices were in this thread. That whole McCormick Spice rectangular Balto Md thing rang such a bell that I had to get up in the middle of the night to check. WHEW! None of those. But I know I threw some of them away probably as recently as last year. LOL... I lived in Baltimore for a long long time so I think I even remember the spice factory or passing by it as least in the 60's or 70's. It also reminds me of the Mrs Bairds factory in Dallas near Love Field so I could be confusing those 2 in my addled brain.

@SummerSkier Oh wow!!! You are a brave, gutsy woman :) You needed something done and just went ahead and did it in spite of your fear :) I bet you could spin a wrench if you had to!

@texasgardnr You have such an organized system for decluttering. Me, not so much! I'm kinda like @MadisonMolly2017 with her kitchen drawer where sometimes it happens because it just strikes my fancy to do it. Like Friday night, I had 10 minutes of decluttering on my list and thought now what!? So I took everything out of the upstairs closet and let it sit there over night. I spent most of yesterday going through blankets, sheets, a memory box, tons of small travel bags and plastic bags and now at least 1/2 of those things are in or on their way to my car trunk for Good Will. My daughter might take a set of sheets and a sleeping bag so I'm excited about that. It's a good feeling. If that 10 min wouldn't have been on my list, I know it wouldn't have gotten cleaned out for a long time. I have peeked in it a couple of times as my pat on the back and it's made me feel happy :)
