ashleycarole86 wrote: Β»I am definitely a recovering celebratory eater The problem with my prior ways is that EVERYTHING was a celebration. I still feel these urges to enjoy every moment of life through food but I manage through this with the following general tactics:
-Have a plan before the celebration. If I know what the food will be, pre-log and pre-track. If I don't, go in at least knowing I'm going to mentally select portions that will fit within my remaining calories.
-Define what is a true celebration and set myself to just below maintenance calories on that day to give myself a bit of space to enjoy.
-Find other ways to enjoy life. I used to get SO much of my daily joy from food. I still love my moments I eat and find a lot of pleasure in it, but I have to keep that in check. Sometimes it just requires mental discipline when all else fails as it can be super tough but I've just gotten to the point where the outcome of making choices has become so motivating it trumps the joy I used to get from overeating.
That all is SO great @ashleycarole86
Especially the last been - remembering what you are doing this for, and that trumps the joy of overeating. That is what I really need to believe and focus on. Thanks.2 -

I cope with these days by remembering some basics that I have learned over the years: portion sizes, avoiding high fat/sugar food, majoring on veggies where possible.
But principally, try not to make food the main event. Enjoy time with others (may be difficult with your father-in-law @ideas2) and find activities to enjoy.
I like this a lot @lesdarts180 and makes me think about how I am arranging things. How I should really focus more on enjoying time with others and actives with others and just less on the food in general. Sounds like a very fun day at the theater and awesome to get in your steps!

Weds April 27
Exercise: 15 minutes MommaStrong and 40 minute walking - really good to get back to the MommaStrong
Tracking: Planned the day and mostly followed the plan, but estimated on the 2 treats we had in the house - Matza bark and birthday cake. Did have only half the amount of birthday cake that I'd had the two days before
Calories: Judging from the scale, definitely over
The only thing saving me is that the Matza bark is almost gone and the cake is starting to taste old. I think today might be the last day of those two things and then I can get back to normal I hope I hope!
Thank you all so much for your wisdom! Sorry to go crazy with quoting, but I feel like I just took a college course in exactly what I am struggling with and I just needed to highlight everything. I continue to learn SO MUCH from this group!2 -

I'm in Raleigh NC for the wedding! Yesterday was the rehearsal and for the rehearsal dinner they had pizza and salad at the soon-to-be newlyweds house. I was pretty "good" I only ate salad.... and some ice cream! Lol. But I'd also had a salad for lunch (traveling) at Arby's, so I was bummed that there wasn't any GF pizza.
Our hotel does have a small workout room, so I may head down to walk on treadmill while hubby sleeps in.6 -

I totally struggle with "celebratory" eating and "I deserve it" eating. Working on other ways to celebrate and reward/treat myself that is not the quick fix that food is. Also trying to keep fresh berries and other decadent healthy foods around for the sweet treats.. work in progress.4 -
Thanks for all the excellent suggestions. After 7 years on MFP most of them are in my toolbox of Solid Habits. I also have an upper weight that I absolutely will not go above. This ceiling has gradually lowered my weight range is now below my original UGW. It took a radical lifestyle reset, but itβs been worth it.Caroline_slowandsteady wrote: Β»@TerriRichardson112
So much wisdom there - indulging temporarily but then snapping out of it and getting back to healthy habits. Not indulging too much. Having a small treat every day so that you don't feel the need to go crazy. Listening to your body.
I really try to do all those things, but they are all out balance right now somehow! Thanks for confirming that is the path, though. I will keep trying.
I AM still learning, and joining the Building Healthy Habits group was a godsend last year when I was flagging a bit.5 -

Social gatherings and vacations are my downfall because I don't have my tools with me (food scale, knowledge of what is in each dish, etc.). Generally there is alcohol involved (not a lot, but my friends are all big wine drinkers) which lowers my decision-making about food. I enjoy hosting and I am known as a good cook, so I do tend to try to impress - which is generally not low-cal. With leftovers, it is usually a one to two day blip. I really have to remind myself that even if I go over calories or stop tracking for the day, that's not an excuse for an all-out binge. Just because I don't record it doesn't mean there aren't consequences. I'll admit to being hard on myself the next day or so, but with more and more knowledge about my body and the impact of calories and exercise, I'm getting better at buckling down for the next week.

I could have written your post. Iβm exactly the same & especially struggled this month & gained. I have tracked all, and still kept doing it.
This month especially bad with food for all the same reasons. Plus I havenβt been planning which is I know, a plan to fail.
Thank you for posting & to all the insights that others shared.
I love this group & even though Iβm not doing everything yet, I continue to feel supported & encouraged.
Thank you all for letting me stay part of it.

I hope we are welcoming to everyone, but especially those that are struggling. I have struggled over the years (most of my adult life yo-yoing around overweight with two periods of obesity). The whole point of the UAC is to encourage fellow team members.
Even those of us who have successfully lost weight can still remember what it was like. And even long-time maintainers can slip up!
Stick with us!5 -
Linda - @lesdarts180 said it so well and Iβll just add my support to hers. You are always welcome and there is no more important post than that of someone struggling who is still engaged and making the effort. We are all cheering for you and know that you are doing your best. Keep with us; keep at it. Hour by hour, knowing someone is always here is sometimes the lifeline we need. π @Elbee14

@jamcnewman I responded quickly yesterday but didn't have much time to explain so I will do so now - and thank you for asking! I've just started training to become a certified life coach. Part of being a great life coach is learning to self-coach and coach from a "clean slate" - everything I learn about how to coach clients is what I'll use to coach myself, too. I didn't know much about life coaching and hadn't interacted with a life coach personally until about a year ago when I stumbled upon a podcast that really changed everything for me (by Katrina Ubell, a physician and certified life coach). I started working on my mindset; working on the source of the issues not just the symptoms. From there I found other life coaches to learn from and it has made a huge difference for me. I've learned so much in my journey from these life coaches and one day it became clear that this is a gift I want to give to others. I will also be regularly coached one-on-one by other life coaches in this process which I know will accelerate my personal progress and growth.
Further along in the program I'll be offering free 20-30 minute Zoom call (audio only) coaching on any topic/issue the client chooses as part of my certification requirements. If you or anyone else here in UAC are interested in being on that list for free coaching, please add me as a friend and send me a direct message!
Regarding keeping up posting here, I start my seasonal job next week too so looking ahead I am not confident I'll be able to keep up with regular check-ins and don't want to pull my focus off the task ahead. I want to put all my efforts into self-coaching, working with my coaches on the areas of my life I want to improve, and learning the skills to be the best life coach I can possibly be for my future clients. I truly appreciate all of the wonderful people in this group and all the encouragement and support I've received while here. I hope you @jamcnewman and others will take me up on my offer to have a coaching session in the coming months!3 -
How absolutely marvellous Mak! You will be a wonderful coach because you are open to self
reflection and improvement yourself. So key to success in this area. Have sent you a private message as I would love a coaching session with you when that time comes in your training journey. Wishing you all the best @makattack220 π·π·π·0 -
