Last week, we started discussing all of our long and short-term goals for the New Year! This week is similar, but weird and wonderful...let's discuss 3 weird and wonderful goals for the year. It can be anything, EXCEPT the standard work on nutrition, walk more, etc.
For you Crafters out there...think bold. For you Readers out there...think big. Let's read and discuss...and bonus points if you follow up with a Meme, Picture, Video, etc.
See you in the Chat Thread!

- I'm hoping to read 50 books this year!
- I'm looking to get back into word puzzles, both on app and in print!
- I'm hoping to discover something new about myself this year!
- I think I'm going to begin getting more organized around the house...you know, cleaning out drawers, throwing away things just sitting with no purpose, etc.

I volunteer garden at the church to which I belong and this corner is a nightmare.
Under that thin layer of earth there is more pipework and manhole covers than you can imagine. It’s impossible to weed with a spade because of these and the tree roots, but weeds have no problem growing. Additionally, the cross is hardly visible from the street.
My weird goal for this year is to get the elders to agree to my temporarily remove the cross, cover the area with weed impeding sheeting, return the cross and fill in the rest of the area with white/grey marled stone chips, making the cross more prominent and reducing the need to weed
Biggest problem with this is getting the elders to agree to any change. Note they can’t help in the garden because of knee, hip and leg issues.

@nansbones7708 The landscape fabric will impede nothing and you'll have weeds growing on top of and through a plastic that will be a nightmare to remove. Plant thyme. It will choke out the weeds, grow to only three inches high or so, and give you nice tiny white flowers that will handle light foot traffic and give a nice fragrance. Before the heat "bakes" the soil, take the side of a trowel and simply scrape over the weeds with the side of your trowel. Sprinkle thyme seeds generously and let them take off and choke the weeds. No idea what your zone is but you want to do this when the ground is no longer frozen. Good luck! (and no need to remove the cross to do this).2

Last year I did an Adventure every week. Things that are outside of my comfort zone. There were indoor adventures, outdoor adventures, and chores. I wrote them up on little slips of paper, and put them in 3 separate jars. Every Tuesday, I pick one thing from each jar. I can then choose to do either the outdoor adventure (if the weather is suitable), or the indoor adventure. If I don't want to do either adventure, then I have to do the chore. It's amazing how drawing "clean the oven" from the chore jar can make me suddenly more adventurous! When I make my choice, the one that I've chosen stays out; the remaining 2 go back in the jars for future Tuesdays. I had a lot of fun with it, so I'm doing it again.
Another weird goal for this year is to finally tackle a challenging crochet project: crocheting a coleus. I bought the pattern last year, and bought supplies, but chickened out. This year, I'm doing it. Sorry, but I think this image is going to be really LARGE.
I don't know if this one is weird, but I'm also doing homemade vegetarian recipes for our evening meals for all of 2025. Mostly simple meals prepared with fresh ingredients. It's our year to eat green!

@micaroo4 that jar idea sounds great, and who knew you could crochet a coleus? 🤷♀️😂 Great goals2

I love this weeks challenge.
My weird and wonderful goal is to create 100 designs for my Etsy shops. This is the adventure that I started last year to give my creativity an air.

Second one is to regrow and strengthen my hairs. I am consistent on Biotin now. Minixdile didn’t Suit me so castor oiling it.
Last one is to read 20 books this year. I joined a book club. We are starting anxious generation.
Mica, loved your three jar idea.3 -
I'm going to give up Reddit, unless I'm looking for a specific answer to something. No more mindlessly scrolling the sum of human despair and stupidity that graces the front page, lol. I've already uninstalled the app. This is part of my greater goal to stop doom scrolling. These forums will be an exception because they inspire me and keep me focused on my goals.
I'm going to learn to Crochet. I have the equipment, I just need to apply myself to the learning!
And I'm going to get back into Duolingo, as much as the passive aggressive little bird irks me!!

@AnAbsoluteDiva I've used the weed impeding sheets before under the bird table at home where bird seeds get dropped all the time yet I rarely have to weed the area and only an odd weed
Like the three jars, I’d be left with all the yukky chores at the end3 -
@Alatariel75 I know exactly what you mean about doom scrolling. I have set timers on apps I don't completely want to get rid of and while there are work-arounds, this tends to limit my time.
I am going to have to think about my weird/non-weight related goals. I have not given this any thought.3 -
I like this idea a lot!
My three that come to mind right now are -
1. I’d love to finish the front yard landscaping, my office, and either the third bedroom or the bathroom this year.
- That means for the front yard, completely pulling up all the crabgrass and weeds, replanting grass seed with hay, and all new plants.
- For my office and the 3rd bedroom, that means finally unpacking after 2-ish years, sanding the walls down, getting lead abatement work done on the window trim, all new plaster and paint.
- For the bathroom, that would mean removing all the mud tiles, lead abatement, a new tiled floor, new plumbing (toilet and sink). I’d even want to exploring switching the toilet and sink positions because we enclosed the bath/shower when we had a new one installed this spring, and it is a little tight getting into the bathroom with the shower wall and sink right by the door.
2. Read 3 books, buy 1 book.
- I have a tendency to collect books and buy multiple books when I am at a bookstore. I need to finish reading before I buy more, so this incentivizes me to actually read the books I bought before I buy more.
3. Play more board games.
- We bought a few new board games and I want to make time to play them with my family and friends, and not just let them sit on shelves or tucked away in cabinets.3 -

I’m right there with you @DaffyGirl88!! 🤣1

This challenge sounds fun, loving all the ideas.
I'm constantly trying to decllutter & organise my full & disorganised house.
There are 4 of us in a 2 bedroom house so it's full but I would love to have a place for everything & everything in its place.Wish me luck it may take me a year 😂
This summer I wanted to explore some places in the UK that I haven't visited before.I have a senior railcard & I like travelling on trains especially at a third off the fare.I only went to about 3 new places & that was with friends in cars.I don't mind travelling on my own so I'm planning to try again.Even if I do 1 place a month I will be happy.
I also spend for too much time scrolling on my mobile phone.I drive my hubby mad when I'm doing it in bed ! I'm sure it's not doing my eyes any good either.
I would like to print some of my photos onto posters or canvas.I have loads of wonderful photos from my regular holidays to Greece.I also have bare walls that need pictures so the list goes on.
Watch this space 🤔

This is going to be a year of no excuses! I plan on taking an instructor class "Refuse to be a victim" and then I plan on teaching the class to others. My last weird and wonderful goal is to do a deeper study of the Bible than I normally do.2
-
I love all of your great ideas! The adventure/chore jar was shared with our group last year. Nice to meet its originator.
My weird goal is to use up stuff that I’ve saved in my home. Half tube of lotion - focus on using that only till gone. Stickers - use them before there’s no more sticky. Burn those candles down. Use up those thank you notes and cards you’ve been saving. Separate and possibly get rid of Christmas ornaments and decorations I don’t actually use anymore. I’m only 60 and in good health, but if something should happen to me or my husband, my children would not be happy with all that we have collected.1 -
1. I want to unpack my house. We moved in last March and only have one usable bedroom and just a small walking path through the garage.
2. I want to camp more than once this year
3. I want to explore more than I did in 2024 with at least one trip out of the country
I love reading, but I have an adventurer's soul that has been hiding out the last few years as my husband, my adventure buddy, glues himself more and more in front of the TV.0 -
@micki48 I love your goal of using up stuff, I may adopt it. When my daughter moved out (many years ago now) she left many partial bottles of shampoo and conditioner in her bathroom. It took me over a year to use them all up. 😯0
-
@micki48 you remind me of a similar challenge I have done, and need to do again - the pantry cleaner! Year before last (before we moved), I spent a few weeks where I only bought fresh veg and meat, and essentials I didn't have, but everything else needed to come from the pantry. It led to some odd meals, but it cleaned the pantry out so I could start fresh and get rid of stuff that had been lingering. Thanks for the remonder!1
