Since we mentioned this in the Introduction thread...

What are you doing this winter?

I have a gym on campus that I will be staying warm in. I'm such a baby, but I'm not gonna let the cold keep me from going there!

    hope to snowshoe

will walk the stairs at work (been doing that for a while.........really a good workout!)

Have a few videos and things at home that I do from time to time.............

and I'll walk..............I like walking in the cold (but not the freeze-your-nosehair kind of cold ;)
  • I suffer from Raynauds Syndrome in my feet so if they get even a little cold it is bad. Once it gets below 40 degrees I stay inside and use my treadmill.
  • I have intentions to run, ski, and snowshoe when the weather is warmer than 10 degrees and the wind is blowing less than 10 MPH or so. In addition to that, I really need to redevelop the habit of going to the gym (<<<uninspiring) when the weather gets really cold. We'll see if that really happens....

Speaking of the gym, they offer Zumba classes. I'm interested, but maybe this isn't for the hopelessly uncoordinated.

I am still out riding my bike. Even rode in the dark last night once I figured out we weren't getting snow. I have ridden as low as 22 degrees. This year I have my old Mountain bike fixed up and I plan on riding through the winter with it. I am sure my long rides will be curtailed to some shorter 15 to 20 mile rides.

In the cities you can bike all winter long. The bike paths are kept clear. I worked with a teacher in Minneapolis who biked 3 miles every day to work.

Ahhhh I have it too! No one ever seems to understand how painful it can be and how easily the numbing occurs. It's nice to hear others can relate even though I wish no one had it.

Nope, I went to Zumba for the first time today and it was pretty fun! I am in the totally uncoordinated crowd: step classes were ALWAYS complete he** for me, but this has a lot more moves that are like the aerobics classes of old. Grapevine, that kind of stuff. And everybody's all over the place so it doesn't matter. 573 calories is worth it regardless!

I always want to x-c ski but rarely seem to get around to it. Once snow hits maybe we can get an x-c topic going to get motivated!

Question for the snow shoers: do you have to buy your own shoes, or can you rent? I'd love to try it, but I wouldn't know where to go.

Sarahthecamper, you have inspired me to try it out. There's a class at my gym tomorrow morning, so I think I'll show up and see if I don't end up stepping on my own feet, or worse, someone else's feet. Ha! Wish me luck. I'll need it.
  • FYI - I have just posted a list of indoor running tracks in MN. Most are in the Mpls./St. Paul area, but there are a few located in other cities.

I'd like to hibernate this winter! But since I can't I'm going to do my best to do my at home workout DVDs. I really hope to get a treadmill or elliptical soon! I know I would be so much better about exercising if I had one.

    Where where?!?!

Oh, sorry. :embarassed: It was a really lengthy list, so I started a new thread in this group. Forgot to mention that. I think I titled it Indoor Running Tracks for Not-So-Hardy Minnesotans, or something like that.

This winter, I'll be running, showshoeing, hitting up some community ed exercise classes, riding my horse (thank goodness for indoor arenas!!) and maybe even using some of the DVD's in the 3-foot-tall stack of exercise DVDs I own.

Tippytoesk8er: Thanks for the list of indoor tracks!

I joined Snap Fitness so I'll have access to treadmills. I use resistance bands at home for strength training. I also take occasional yoga and zumba classes at my community center.

I am sad, though, that the cold will prevent me from running outside. I had the most beautiful outdoor run yesterday...I hope it won't be my last until spring!

Where do you live? Around here, in Duluth, there are snowshoe 'clubs', and some of the parks have shoes to rent for walks. I'd research your Parks & Recreation Dept and see what they have available :) Shoes aren't that expensive.............and with the lightweight and easier on/off, it's a really fun thing to do! Believe me, I am NOT an outdoorsy girl, and for ME to try it last year and LIKE it was amazing!!!

    Regarding snowshoeing:

The Minnesota State Parks are the BEST resource! (Thanks for posting the link, woggy3939).

I used to HATE winter, but that all changed when I found snowshoeing two years ago. I now own two pair and snowshoe at least every other weekend when we have enough snow.

The MN State Parks rent snowshoes for $5 per day, though not all parks offer them. Some offer the traditional wooden snowshoes and others offer the modern metal snowshoes. Calling the parks ahead of time for availability is your best option. REI also rents, but they're more expensive (I think $20 per day?). The MN State Parks offer cross country ski equipment, which includes skis, poles and bindings for $15 a day as well, but again, call ahead for availability.

I have visited all MN State Parks in the southern half of Minnesota, with a few more northern (Banning, Jay Cooke, Moose Lake, St. Croix) and have gone snowshoeing in the majority of them, so feel free to message me if you have questions or want recommendations.

The boyfriend and I are in the Passport Club through the State Parks ($20 to join, I believe), where you get a passport book and collect stamps at each park you visit. You also get a journal to record your visits. Along the way, you can earn patches and free nights of camping at the parks. At the end, once you visit all 72 parks, you'll receive a plaque stating you've visited them all. It's been great because it gives us a destination for weekend trips and a reason to go hiking/snowshoeing. I highly recommend it! We're more than half way through the parks and are hoping to visit more this winter via snowshoe or snowmobile!

I recently joined Lifetime (again) so that I can play racquetball (700+ calories an hour, people), tennis and do masters swimming. I finally came to grips with the fact that I don't have a lot of self-motivation on a machine and I need a little competition. So far, so good! (not that the pounds show)

Well, I was right about being too uncoordinated. The Zumba class was really just dancing, which I can't do. At times, after watching a few repetitions of a step routine, I would feel like I could get the rhythm, but then I'd "miss", and have to stop and concentrate again. By the time I'd get the steps, the instructor would move on to something else. And, I found it impossible to add arm motions without feeling like I was going to inadvertently engage in a game of Twister. So, I ended up spending most of the hour standing around awkwardly, and didn't get a workout. A few miles of running on the treadmill took care of that, though.

But, I'm not giving up on Zumba without giving it a fair chance, so I'm going back to try again this Saturday.
