Overweight Children

What's your first thought? Are you judgmental of the parents for having an overweight child? Are you the parent of an overweight child and if so, how did it happen and what are you trying to do about it?

I've noticed overweight children are more and more the "norm". We used to have a couple of "fat kids" (terrible, I know) when I was little, but now 1 in 3 kids are considered overweight. 1 in 3!! Why?

    Several things that come to mind;

    - better education (nutrition, fitness etc)
    - regulate the types of food people are exposed to, like cigarettes.
    - programs to facilitate sports and games where kids can interact with one another instead of playing video games all day long

    This is obv not a comprehensive list, just some ideas . Would like to see where everyone takes this talk

    I think that unless the child has some sort of medical condition that causes weight gain, that it is up to the parents to give the child healthy food. It disturbs me that people who feed their kids junk and fast food are setting up their children for a rough future of breaking habits, losing weight, having self-esteem issues, and more. Sad thing is, most of those parents don't even realize it or understand. :(

    I think we've all seen that one kid at Burger King or McDonalds stuff his/her face and is over 100lbs. Why do parents let their kids eat this crap?! The kid is already obese and they are just contributing to the problem.

    Even at my heaviest - I knew what I was feeding my body was wrong. I dont think people have an absolute grasp of calories and nutrition but we all fundamentally know a cheeseburger is worse than salad. So saying people dont know is kind of excusing it away. I think calories should be listed on ALL menus and fast food places should offer healthy alternatives as a requirement.

    It seems to come down to one thing... laziness. Too lazy to cook a proper meal - the drive thru is easier. Too lazy to go hiking or play outside - video games and tv are more appealing. Too lazy to tell your kid no to the sweets or soda. and on and on

    The bad stuff tastes good. Its natural for kids to want that stuff. Parents need to step up. Also... schools! Gym once a week for 20 minutes is NOT acceptable. My kids school menu is atrocious. There are two meal options a day and one is always fried and the other is cheese laden.

    I do blame the parents, for the most part, but I also blame the fact that in this country the cheapest and most convenient foods are the most calorie/fat laden and have little to no nutritional value. We aren't a culture that places importance on health and fitness anymore. However, now that the obesity rates have skyrocketed, I think that is slowly going to change.

    Thank you, Michelle Obama. :heart:
