How do you all feel about the possibility of DOMA being repealed in the very near future? Has DOMA affected you personally?

I hope it's repealed! It's an issue I've never been able to wrap my head around. I don't understand how two men, or two women, getting married affects this country so much. If I'm allowed to marry the person I love, why, in a land where all are supposed to be equal, is my neighbor not allowed to marry the person she loves? That's insane to me. Because I marry a man that grants me special tax breaks, insurance breaks and tons of other benefits. It's not equal if all cannot, by law, participate. I think Congress needs to pull their heads out and finally give all Americans the same rights. I don't remember the part in the Constitution where it said 'all men are created equal, unless you're gay or lesbian'. I must have missed that day in school.
I'm also excited that DADT got repealed!! Another major step in the right direction!0 -

To be fair, it's not totally Congress' fault, we (as a nation/states) continue to put these people in power. The change needs to happen in our communities, towns, and churches.0 -
Yes, we do.0

Thanks for posting the link!
I'd love to see DOMA repealed, and I'd prefer Congress to do it, instead of a court challenge, where people will debate endlessly that judges are overstepping their bounds. :grumble: I don't believe Congress will do it any time soon. Congress is rarely at the forefront of civil rights.
If it wasn't for DOMA and similar writing being in my state's constitution, I'd have married my longtime partner long ago. Guess I'd now be divorced, though! :laugh:0 -
It really makes you see what a farce "separation of church and state is". Church/religion is what determined and still determines marriage to be between man and woman only, yet the entire country (except for a few states) is bound by it.0

I've always thought of it like this:
Marriage is NOT:
1]. Solely a religious institution.
2]. Solely a Christian institution.
3]. Solely a right-wing Christian institution
So why do we allow?:
1]. A religion
2]. One particular religion in general (at least in the U.S.)
3]. One branch of this particular religion
to dictate the LEGAL definition of an institution that EVERYONE can, or rather should, have the ability to take part in.0 -

I do not know if this will even affect me (I'm not the marriage sort of person), but either way I signed.0

The whole issue is kept alive by Republicans so they can get higher turnout at elections. They time the anti-gay ballot issues to get their otherwise apathetic voters out to the polls when they need the boost.0

It is very frustrating. We are getting married in January. Of course, we can't legally marry in this state (and can actually go to jail for getting married). However, we plan on marrying in Iowa (legally), then a domestic partnership in our state, and then a ceremony for ourselves and friends in our state. It is unfortunate that we have to get so many pieces of paper from so many places -- just to prove that we are, in fact, a married couple.0

You can go to JAIL for getting married but a domestic partnership is ok? What the heck? I mean first of all what the heck, you can go to JAIL for getting married? But second of all - does no one in your state see that it makes no sense?
I hope it is repealed but I don't have very HIGH hopes at the moment. Maybe in another 5 -10 years. I also want domestic partnerships for non-gay couples. I'd be in a domestic partnership right now if I could, but I hate all the social and religious rigmarole around marriage. Just call everything a domestic partnership and call "marriage" that special religious or cultural ceremony that people have.0 -
DOMA is dead already. Our politics is just a little slow to catch on. It's end game and any social conservative who doesn't admit that they lost this one is stupid, lying, or trying to get a campaign donation. Possibly all three.0
