Fitness Challenge....

I was wondering whether or not any of you guys would be up for a fitness challenge?

Back on one of the old fitness boards I used to post on we had a running competition based on the US army fitness test. The challenge covers three events:

A timed two-mile run
Maximum sit-ups in 2 minutes
Maximum push-ups in 2 minutes

Further information and scoring can be found here: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/a/afpt.htm

Anyone up for the challenge?

When were you thinking of doing this? I'm certainly not up to scratch at the moment, but I'd be interested in getting myself fit for it.
  • I was thinking of doing my benchmark stats either this weekend or next weekend.

What we did before was once everyone had recorded their benchmark we agreed to do updates at the end of each month.

I didn't do anything this weekend, so how about we aim to start this weekend? I can certainly set myself some benchmarks, and hope to see improvement shortly.

Definitely sounds a good Idea, and I would be up for it..
The only problem I have got, is that I cannot run due to injury to my back
    Shame I cannot join in..

How frustrating Andy - I'm currently recovering from a back injury, so I feel your pain.

Just went for a "run", out of interest to see what my baseline is going to be like. 2 miles in 19 minutes (admittedly alternating walking and jogging) isn't the most amazing time I could have hoped for, but given that I've been on honeymoon and not going to the gym I don't think it's awful. I'll set my baseline on Friday at the gym, hopefully it'll be a little better.
  • So shall we have a weekend of benchmarking?

Sure, why the heck not? It'll motivate me to try harder to 2 miles in under 19 minutes! I'll post up my benchmarks by the end of Sunday.

Just been on honeymoon :blushing: You should have lost loads by now

Yes walking is a very hard task for me, so can I use the Air Walker??

    David
At the mo I am currently doing 35mins on Air Walker.. which equals around 500cals.
I will benchmark this weekend and go for a faster burn if I can..
    Might up it to 40mins

The idea behind this is to have a bit of fun; set personal bests and kick them to the kerb month after month!

    Go for it sir!

I managed to slice a minute off my 2 mile time at the gym today, so I'm feeling pretty psyched for this challenge.
  • I'm trying to find a local running track to do my two miler on and it's not looking good!

If I don't find one it looks like I'll be running twice round this one mile circuit I mapped out around my house. The problem......

Well it's 1 mile up a pretty steep incline and then 1 mile down the other side!

Ah well dig deep and as we used to say in the army 'thumb up bum, mind in neutral and go for it!'

I would love to get involved but I already do daily challenges which is killing me and my insomnia is actually making my body worse as it's not repairing quick enough.

Good luck to you all, oooh I do love a challenge.

    :drinker:

OMG I am so totally Knackered..

Can hardly type but here goes...

Wish I did my sit ups and push ups before the Air Walker..
Because I cannot run, I did 20min Air Walker at my fastest speed.... burnt 300cal..
The Sit up's, I managed to do 15 in total...In the 2 min aloted time... (Back was killing me)
The Press up's Was a little easier.... (Yes they were all proper ones... With wifey holding fist near floor and my shoulders touching on the way down) managed 20 in the 2 min...

Can't wait to see what I do next weekend...

Right, did the benchmarking this morning as I was too busy all over the weekend:
2 miles - 17.52 minutes (alternating walking fast and jogging)
    2 mins pressups - 40 (girly style)
    2 mins situps - 55

Previously I managed the 2 miles in 18 minutes, so I'm getting there. I'm building up to being able to run/jog the entire distance.

That is good going, well done....
    I used to manage 1.5 miles in 7 - 9 mins when I was 33..
Would not be able to do that now though, more like 7hrs

I cannot find the times for older people on that web site..
As we both know, when you are 18, you have to pass a BFT in under 9mins. Then you get time added on for age..
When I left the Army, I had 12mins 30secs within to do it... Obviously I smashed that time...

I would imagine that a person out in civvy street would have around 15 to 20 mins for a 2mile run..
    Not quite sure..

Next week, I am going to see how many calories I can burn in 20mins on Saturday.
    Then 15mins on Sunday..
    Seeing as I cannot run...

If you could find the BFT time for an over 40yr old, that would be great. I will keep looking too.
I will also ask a few of my Army buddies..

2 miles in 16 minutes 50 seconds today. I was quite angry when I arrived at the gym, and quite serene (and exhausted) when I left.

No idea how fast I did it in today, I was watching Lorraine on the telly at the gym instead. Much better time on my C25K, and I accidentally kept running through one of my walk intervals, so I feel pretty good about myself.

    Woop woop

    Situps 30
    Pushups 35
20mins on cross trainer fast speed 700cals..

Could hardly walk after, but loved every minute of it..

I wasn't able to complete 2 miles today, an old ache reappeared in the glute, and I know the warning signs well enough to not ignore it. Likewise I didn't do any situps or press ups this time. I'll see how the glute pain goes, and pick up again when it's gone.
  • Due to circumstances beyond my control (or was it??) I wasn't able to/didn't do the December benchmark. The plan is to have a bash on the same circuit this weekend!

This is a brilliant idea! I will have to do the same as Andylee63 though and do my 2 miles on the cross trainer.
