Des Moines Area- Activities/Exercise Ideas

Options
I'm pretty new to the area and I was hoping people in the Des Moines area had some suggestions for activities or places to go to exercise. Are there any recommended gyms, trails, clubs, etc? Any input would be helpful!

Farrell's Extreme Bodyshaping has a bunch of gyms around the metro/Ankeny/Ames.

I actually did Farrell's 10 week program last Jan-March. I ended up gaining weight and inches which wasn't what I was going for! I did improve my running time, sit ups and push ups though!

Wow, that is quite strange. I followed the nutrition plan to a T and missed only 2 work outs. My Before and After pic is my avatar pic.

I know, I'm a bit of a freak. I know about 5 people that have done it and got fantastic results. Two even won the $1000 prize. I was thinking of maybe trying it again sometime next year and see if I can get different results. I really do miss the kickboxing!

I am a Gold's Gym member (off 22nd St, in West DM), If you want cardio, weight lifting, classes (zumba, pilates) etc, this is a great gym. Although Golds is known for body building, they have a great staff of trainers that can get you started on good fitness routines. The best part of the membership is the cost - very low compared to many of the other fitness choices in DSM.

I am a Kosama fan. They have locations all around Des Moines area and starting to expand to other states. Group fitness/class is the style 6-1hr classes a week with each day being unique to that week. (plyo, upper, kickboxing, kettlebell, lower, yoga)

Fitness sports in Windsor Heights has a scary website :) but they list all the upcoming races in iowa: http://www.fitnesssports.com/ - great running store too.

I run/walk the Dorian trail north of the river at lunch - just look for the girl with her head down and a determined stride.

If you really want great shoes, and you are willing to fork over some serious money, Fittness Sports is the place to go. This is the only place I have purchased workout shoes in the past three years. They are more expensive, but they know their stuff.

If you enjoy canoeing or kayaking you can check out this site for river launch locations and trails.

My personal favorite is the Dragoon (not dragon - dragoon) trail from Waterworks boat ramp north of Boone to the E57 boat Ramp in Luther, IA. One of the best stretches of river in Iowa. Also as someone already mentioned (and linked) there are a ton of amazing trails in the area.

Scary doesn't begin to cover it. I thought for a moment I had gone back in time. Windows 3.1 and a 28K modem.

Any of you like to stroll around Grey's Lake - I was there last week and it's such a nice trail around the lake - plus you feel ilke you are in another country with all the international people walking. Kind of the melting pot of des moines
