Hello, So I'm relatively new to this site. I was using livestrong but i love the community here. So i was thinking of becoming vegan, for a few diffrent reasons.
1.Cost of meat and dairy is crazy high.
2.Recently learned how we get all those eggs and other products. (horrible!)
3.Better my health over all.

But, i have a few questions.
1.Other than rice, beans, nuts, fruits and veggies what do you eat?
2.Whats your main source of protien?
3.What have you noticed about yourself since going vegan? weight? Body? Energy? skin? sleep? Has any of that changed good or bad for you?
4.Do you know where i can find some easy recipes? I don't have the space or time for anything complex.
5.Why did you become vegan? How long have you been vegan?

So glad to hear you are considering making this change! Going vegan was one of the best, if not the best, decision I've ever made in my young adult life. Here are my answers to your questions! (If you look at my diary, you'll notice that I include a lot of whey protein. I am currently living in China, and it is very difficult to eat a completely vegan diet here as I don't have access to a kitchen, hotplate, etc. I go back to the States in 25 days, when my diary will be much, much, much better. Beijing is pretty unfriendly for vegans if you don't have the money to go to vegan Buddhist restaurants every meal.)

    1. Tofu, tempeh, seitan, lentils, grain meats from companies like Field Roast and Tofurky, whole-grain breads, pasta, homemade soy or coconut yogurt, tastyass smoothies, tofu jerky, egg and dairy free baked goods, tortilla chips, whatever I want! :D

    2. At home, I eat a lot of tempeh and tofu, but I also supplement with vegan protein powder - 75% gemma pea and 25% brown rice makes a great profile, but I do work out 6 days a week - and hard. You should adjust your protein intake based on how active you are.

    3. I wouldn't base my weight loss off going vegan - it's easy to gain weight being vegan just as with any other lifestyle, as veganism is a lifestyle and not a diet. My weight loss is attributed to a consistent calorie deficit, but since going vegan, I feel better spiritually. It is incredibly satisfying and fulfilling knowing that my food choices are aligned with my morals.

    4. Oh god the internet is the greatest place for easy vegan recipes. My favorite sites are The Post-Punk Kitchen, Vegan YumYum, Oh She Glows and VegWeb, but there are literally thousands of vegan food blogs and recipe sites with quick, easy recipes.

    5. I was vegetarian for eight years before going vegan in 2010. I had started researching about the meat, dairy and egg industries, and I just realized that I couldn't support those industries anymore. I loved animals, and it didn't feel right to walk around telling people about what an animal lover I was, and then consuming their secretions and byproducts. For eight years I was one of those vegetarians who "just couldn't give up my cheese!" I used to laugh at vegans, until I "saw the light". I no longer view the idea of eating meat, eggs and dairy as a "personal choice", because it affects so many innocent lives. I act as an animal advocate, and love to talk about veganism and animal rights, but I do my best to contain myself until the topic is brought up in conversation.

Please don't hesitate to let me (or any of us!) know if you need help or advice during your transition!

I think I might have to do some shopping soon.

I am flattered to be added (and stalked!). My favorite stores are Trader Joe's and Whole Foods (they're expensive, but they do offer weekly coupons on their website!), but I've found many vegan staples at my regular grocery store in my smallish hometown in New Jersey.

I completely agree, but if you keep your eyes peeled here (http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/coupons/), they sometimes have great deals on plant milks, Earth Balance butters, and other vegan favorite things. My boyfriend and I eat at their hot bar a lot, so it's always nice to have these coupons on hand to pick up some necessities while we're there! I rarely pay full price there.

I eat a lot of vegetables and fruits typically my day will consist of fruit smoothie for breakfast, salad for lunch and dinner is vegies and I make some type of meat substitute such as a vegeburger or I also am loving risotto at the moment.

I get protein from Protein powder added to my breakfast smoothie and I eat a serve of legumes every day

There are some good and easy recipies on this site too.

I have found that I am a lot healthier and that is due to the removal of temptation when I go out for coffee with friends I can usually have fruit salad or nothing so it is easy to avoid the chocolate cake.

I too am a vegan for ethical reasons I am not ok with the egg or dairy industry and once you start to care its hard to stop. As a mother I cant imagine what it is like for a cow to have her children taken away so quickly after birth. I like baby chickens too and I wouldnt like to be the one feeding them into the mincer and if its not something I am comfortable doing then I dont think its OK to pay someone else to do it.

All in all I am healthier, happier and my food is cheaper so really whats not to love??

1.If you can think of it, there is a vegan version of it out there. The only trouble that I've run into is that if I want something usually non-vegan, like a doughnut, I often have to make it myself. Don't get me wrong though- that's not a difficult thing at all. Try vegweb.com. It's so full of vegan recipes that you'll never miss a thing.
    2. I go through like a block of tofu every week & I eat nuts every day. Whole-grain things are also chock-full of protein. 1 whole-wheat bagel has like 10 grams!
3.My metabolism sped up like crazy. When I was a vegetarian, I had to eat very little & very healthily to keep any extra weight off. Once I went vegan though, I suddenly got sooo hungry that I was eating like 4 meals a day with snacks in between, and it wasn't making me fat at all. I guess that the healthy-ness caused me to burn more calories throughout the day... ?
    4. vegweb.com like I said earlier. It's mana from heaven.
    5. It was mainly ethical reasons, like how cattle-raising has spread to the rain-forest and is one of the biggest contributors to global warming, and how 90% of the corn & grain grown in this country goes to feed cattle while little kids in other countries starve to death. Meat just makes me sick.

Post Punk kitchen or http://www.theppk.com/ has volumes of Vegan stuff for you, such as food guides, what staples you should buy for your kitchen, spices, etc. Also get the cookbooks: Vegan cupcakes take over the world, (cookbook $10 @ amazon) vegan cookies take over your cookie jar (another cookbook) Vegan pie in the sky and Vegan cake versions of those books as well, all of which give you fantastic goodies too eat, cause lets face it, our treats taste better than the ones made with animal products plus you didn't have to kill anything to eat them.

Another great resource if you are new to Veganism are te books: Becoming Vegan (nutritional science info) and Vegans daily companion (Spiritual and inspirational/ mental health info). Both have solid information for you when considering this lifestyle change. It grows on you quickly and is contagious.

Also Get "The Big Vegan cookbook" and the "Vegan Substitution guide" which help you to figure out how too cook the same old dishes you were used too without the animals.

Here are some links to the books on Amazon, of course you can find them anywhere you can buy books or check them out from your library. The links however will let you get an idea of prices and read some reviews excerpts, etc and see if you are interested.

If you're need simple, check out www.engine2.com for recipes and inspiration. I also use www.fatfreevegan.com, www.happyhervivore.com, and a host of other vegan sites (seems like I find more every few days). I also have a selection of cookbooks (Happy Herbivore is a great one to start with) and many more on my Amazon wish list.

Have fun. It feels great! And about a month into it, when you don't have to stand in front of the frig wondering what to eat, it gets a lot easier.

Now, about a practical matter, drink LOTS of water or take Beano until you system gets used to it or you may blush a lot in the beginning!

    Good luck!

1.Other than rice, beans, nuts, fruits and veggies what do you eat?

This is one of my biggest pet peeves (not you in particular, just in general) about people's idea of vegans. I eat whatever I damn well want! Feel free to friend me and look at my diary. I eat probably the same things you do -- cereals, oatmeals, bagels for breakfast. Sandwiches, soups, salads for lunch. Pasta, stir-fry, burritos, for dinner. You can eat ANYTHING. Last week I wanted ranch dressing - I goggled "vegan ranch dressing" and in 10 minutes had a container of yummy dressing to put on my salads and dip my fries into.

2.Whats your main source of protien?

Beans, I'd think. I eat lentils and beans every week. I also eat a pound of tofu a week (easy to chop up and add into stir-fries). I also drink fortified soy milk and eat lots of peanut butter. I LOVE peanut butter.

3.What have you noticed about yourself since going vegan? weight? Body? Energy? skin? sleep? Has any of that changed good or bad for you?

I love being vegan. I feel better all around. I am NEVER bloated (not even during "that time"), I have regular potty breaks (if you know what I mean) and my hair and nails have never been shinier or stronger. Thank you avocado!

4.Do you know where i can find some easy recipes? I don't have the space or time for anything complex.

Lots of good advice already posted. Oh She Glows is freaking fantastic. Fat Free Vegan. PPK (post punk kitchen). Vegan Yum Yum. Vegan Dad. Just google any of those phrases and you'll get the blogs.

5.Why did you become vegan? How long have you been vegan?

I became vegan because I do not believe in the exploitation of animals for the consumption of humans. It is not necessary and, as I'm still alive, you can see that people won't just shrivel up and die from not eating animal products. I have been a vegetarian for over 4 years and a vegan for almost 6 months.
