Fresh Meat

I've been interested in Roller derby for ages, I don't know anyone who does it, but I'd love to get involved with a team here in DC. I (luckily) have time before they have their next Fresh Meat Camp, what would you suggest for training so I'm a little more prepared when the time comes?

If you haven't been on skates in a while, I'd go to as many open skates at skating rinks as possible. But also work on getting your endurance up in anyway possible. Also be on the lookout for some cheap safety gear - helmet, pads etc. I know that in our league we have loaner gear you can borrow for a little bit, but its always more comfortable to wear your own as soon as you can.0

Thanks! I've been looking to buy but that's good to know.0

I am a fresh meat at charm city - and DC is a great league! Going to open skates is really important, and any cardio you can do will help, along with squats and situps. Your core is used way more than you'd think! Measure your feet carefully before you buy skates!
Here's some great info about where to skate: http://dcrollergirls.com/rollergirl-tryouts/

Skills you should work on:
crossovers, you know, picking your right foot over your left as you skate
balance - can you skate on one wheel for a whole straightaway, on either leg?
derby stance - imagine sitting in a chair while you skate. feet wide, knees over your ankles (not together) and chest up, not forward.
stops - t stops, plow stops, and turn around toe stops!
falls - one knee fall, two knee falls and four-point falls
pack skating - get used to skating near other people. often open skates with lots of kids are a great way to learn awareness
Also consider volunteering for DC for upcoming bouts and events, or becoming an NSO until tryouts begin. The earlier you get involved, the better.
This website has some interesting notes, despite being designed like a high schooler in 1997.

ahh! you're skating with charm city?! we're starting a derby league in columbus, ga right now, but in march i'm moving to maryland and was going to try out for the charm city roller girls!0 -
Awesome! CCRG is starting a boot camp style tryout beginning April 16 and running until June. We'll have an informational session on March 26. I hope you can make it!
I have been with the league in some capacity for about a year - and so glad to be with them now as a fresh meat. It's hard work but oh so worth it!0 -
