I have been waiting for a group like this to pop up on MFP and since it has not yet, I decided to create one!

As far as politics go, I live in a pretty boring state, Oregon. But I think I got my passion from my home state of Wisconsin!

I am pretty progresive in my politics, although probably would not consider myself far left and I love to chat with other liberals. :D

Hello fellow lefty, good to see a group for this on a site that I'm absolutely certain won't put up with any trolling nonsense from random posters. (Most of the sites I've posted on over the years are infested, and liberals are a favorite target!)

Hi, I'm a liberal Dem in Texas. You can imagine how popular I am. This should get interesting as the election season gets going!

Hi, moderate Dem lucky enough to live in "blue" Northern Virginia. I am glad that there is a group here for us nutjob, Commie libs :-) I consider myself to be pretty open-minded and can't stand the hypocrisy that is spewed by the majority of today's right wing nutjobs. Telling the government to get out of our lives while trying to dictate morality via laws just doesn't jive with me.

I like the message built into your tracker. Wish more people would follow it!

Oh no, I am sure this wouldn't attract anyone from the far right to argue with us! :P Glad you found this group!!

I have a liberal friend who lives in Texas, she said she lives in Austin so it doesn't count though. She told me that a comedian once described Austin as the, bright blue *kitten* on the red baboon butt that is Texas. :P
  • Hello comrades! I'm from primarily blue NJ, but pardon us for our recent lapse in judgement for governor. I may live in a blue state, but a very red/independent county, so my political discussions are pretty well limited in my neck of the woods.

Thankfully I have a very progressive nephew who is occupying Wall Street from time to time.

You sound like me! I live just outside a very progressive part of my state, even my county is usually blue. But I live in a very rural area. My son was even slammed up against the lockers for voting in the high school (mock) elections for Obama. My family is split in half as far as politics go. At least my parents are progressive lol

    Glad you found the group!
  • I am also a liberal Texan. So how do you translate an interest in healthy politics into a healthy lifestyle?

I think they go together quite naturally. When I first started caring about my health and about fitness, I was just out of high school. To me, the idea was as simple as "sound mind, sound body". I was spending time in college pursuing my "intellectual" development, such as it was, and it seemed only natural to do the same thing with diet and exercise. This period also coincided with my becoming more aware of political issues, social issues, etc. To me, it was all wrapped up in one big metaphysical package.

40+ years later, I still feel the same way in general. To me the same core of empathy, caring about the general welfare of everyone, focusing on fact-based solutions, trying to improve society as a whole--these ideals apply as much to my political views as they do my lifestyle.

BTW, I am from the Chicago area. I live in the western suburbs, in DuPage county. I have always considered DuPage kind of a mirror image of the larger Cook County that includes Chicago. Instead of a monolithic, often corrupt Democratic political structure, we have a monolithic, often corrupt Republican political structure. The demographics are changing a little--in 2008, the county actually went 56%44% for Obama. But I think that was an anomaly because by then even republicans hated bush so much. The county govt is still 100% republican as has been for decades, all the congressional seats are held by repubs, so unless there has been an even greater influx of Latinos in the last four years, I suspect DuPage will go back to being red in 2012.

I see with 10 members, this is still going to be a "niche" group, but I going to hang in there and support everyone. Who knows, maybe we'll grow as the election draws closer.
  • I'm impressed. I was in great shape in college but it was not due to deep thought. It was an accident of being young and active. Even though I studied philosophy and thought about the mind body duality, I tended to take health and agility for granted.

I must tell my dad this one! I am originally from Fort Worth but my parents luckily moved us to Colorado when I was 13 and they raised me to be a proper outspoken liberal.

Ya, it cracked me up! Colorado is awesome! What a trade up as far as states are concerned lol

Speaking of the elections, is Newt just there to make the other candidates look slightly less icky by comparison?

Speaking of the elections, is Newt just there to make the other candidates look slightly less icky by comparison?

Didn't you know? God told Newt to run so Obama would win! Haha!

Anyway, i guess I should introduce myself too. I'm Amanda, originally from Indiana but I moved to Ohio. I'm from a very Conservative family who just about flipped their **** when I told them I was pro gay marriage. To this day, they don't believe that I'm a Democrat, they're argument being "All of your family is Republican, so you are too." And that affected me about as much as their argument that "Your grandma has blue eyes and I (my mom) have blue eyes, so do you!" No, I have hazel eyes and I'm a Democrat, dammit!

Anyway, I am Christian, well, more of a Deist, I would say. I believe that there's a higher power, but I don't believe that said higher power really has a lot of control over our lives. And, really, I don't think said higher power would agree with anything Republicans say, despite their being "the Christian party."

Currently, I'm in college majoring in Social Science Education and minoring in Political Science. I want to be a government teacher because I know too many people (my mom included) who say that they are either Democrat or Republican (or anywhere in the middle) but when I actually talk to them about their beliefs, they don't know why they hold those certain beliefs. Most times, they don't really agree with the party they identify with, but they stick with that party because that's what their family does (like my mom.)
I want to change that in at least somebody. Regardless of what party you vote for, please, for the sake of chocolate covered kittens, know why you are voting for that person!

My mom, like I had mentioned a lot in this, and I realize that it's become quite a long post, but it's ok, I think it's interesting enough to read the whole thing, but that may be because I'm full of myself... -ahem-
anyway. My mom. She is currently on Disability and she cannot work at all and her only source on income is from Disability. She always complains because the government keeps cutting the income that she receives and she says that she doesn't make enough money to cover living expenses (she really doesn't.) However, because all of her family is Conservative, she refuses to vote for a Democrat, who would give her more money or at least try to help people like her more. It's pretty sad, really.

Anyway, I think that's all. I even got a little rant in there! Glad to be part of the group!

Great! Thanks for letting us know so much about you. I am kind of a black sheep too with my family as a whole. My parents are too. We have a huge extended family and they are super conservative. They're exhausing to talk politics with.

    Welcome to the group!!

Hi all - a belated reply. Very liberal here in Texas (Houston, which is pretty liberal, thankfully).
