Hello, this is Jody from Western Washington (the state that is). I turned 40 in August and I'm a mother to one, but via my husband, I have two grown sons, and five grandchildren. The funny thing is that my daughter is only 12, so the grandma thing is still feeling new to me although I've played this role for four years.

My goal this year is to complete an Olympic distance triathlon and to finish my first marathon. I have 20 pounds to lose and my biggest goal is to find out what my blood panel numbers are and improve my eating habits and lose weight. I just lost a good friend last week, and we suspect a heart attack might have played a part (again, just an assumption), but nonetheless, want to take my heart health to a new level and make every gal I know aware that heart attacks are the number one killer of women in the US, so we need to take our personal health seriously. Sorry, my new soapbox, it's the color red by the way, my soapbox that is....lol.... :>)

Wishing everyone a great week, and will be back soon, Jody

Loving your soapbox!!! As moms we always put ourselves on the back burner!! But how can we properly take care of our families if we don't take care of us first!!!

Welcome Jody! I suffer with CAD so I know all to well about how scary heart disease can be! I am 43 and I must do all I can to be able to be around longer to enjoy my family! We are all in the same boat together!
  • I started training for my second 10k. Last year I walked it. This year my goal is to run half. We can do this.

Thank you for your words of support. I'm encouraging every woman I know, meet, and would like to meet to sign up with www.goredforwomen.org

Thus far I have made an appt for the annual preventative tests including bloodwork for cholesterol, blood sugars, and the whole shabang! I am also putting on a jewelry party at a local cafe the first Saturday of February to kick off Wear Red and Heart Awareness month. I will be wearing red everyday in the month of February. If you go to the above website you can receive a red dress lapel pin for free. Pretty cool!

So why am I going all out border line crazy on this you might be wondering?

Last week I lost a close friend/co-worker. We suspect she had a heart attack behind the wheel of her car. She lost her life in the incident, but fortunately no one else was hurt. What saddens me is that she was taking her health seriously and had lost 40 pounds in the last year. She was looking so wonderful and she was becoming the woman she had envisioned, little did we know that there remained some underlying issues.

I've decided that 2012 I will be doing everything I can to be a warrior to bring awareness to dangers of heart disease amongst women. Please feel free to join me.

I won't write about this every post I promise, just the occasional reminder.

Looking forward to sharing goals, dreams, and race results with you!!

With care, Your Fitness Pal, Jody

Great meeting you. I absolutely love your hair style (in the pic). I appreciate your understanding, it's funny, 40 just sneaks up on a person and it's easy to retain the habits of being in your 20's and 30's and not realize what is happening within our bodies. I'm a woman so I think it's natural to want to look good, but at the end of the day, I want to be healthy and see my bucket list goal of seeing a triple digit birthday come true. I hope my daughter is prepared for that....lol.

With CAD is there anything in particular you have to maintain dietary wise that is out of the norm for others? How can I best support you in this group? I always need verbal kicks in the pants to exercise when it's raining, and in the pacific northwest it's raining a lot!

My Dr. tells me eat low carb, exercise, and strength training. I have high cholesterol as well...thanks to my wonderful genetics (Maternal Grandfather). So, Lots of good carbs, protein and exercise. I have discovered George Stella's cookbooks and just love them!
