53 with a knee of 100

I feel like I'm getting old before my time - or to be more precise - my knee's are letting me down.:grumble:
I dislocated my knee when i was a teenager and it's never been as strong as it should be. Just before Christmas it started playing up - subluxing (nearly but not quite dislocating) and locking. Now I've got to go for physio once a week for range of movement and quadriceps strengthening exercises (which is fine), trouble is the exercises are making my knee ping, pop and lock even more. Next weeks physio, so I've been told involves moving my knee cap and taping it into the correct position and learning to exercise and walk etc with it in the right place. Sounds lovely - not !. :noway: If the physio doesnt work then I will need an arthroscopy - only good thing about that is I work for an orthopaedic consultant so I know what I'm letting myself in for. To make matters worse because I'm over compensating on my other leg - thats started playing up too!!!
Anyway - as I said before it all makes me feel that my knee is about 100 and it really pees me off that I cant trust my knee anymore and cant run, jump or do any physical exercise where my knee may be compromised.
Anyway rant over... I know there are lots of people out there with far far worse problems. Just gets me down at times thats all.:ohwell:

Oh, I really sympathise, you are really going through a bad time. I am so aware that with the extra weight I have carried for most of my life has abused my joints, and especially my hips, knees and ankles. So all I can do now is try my best to reduce my weight - but I fear it is rather like shutting the stable door, though, and I may be going through what you're going through in the next few years.
My thoughts are with you!0 -
Thank you.0

I can fully empathise with you. I used to be a postie and in 2008 I slipped on someone's path (because Royal Mail shoes are cr*p) and landed like a sack of spuds on my left hand side. I'm only 30 now, but I still have problems with my left hip getting sore if I walk long distances, and I needed physio after the fall because I was compensating etc afterwards as I'd damaged soft tissues and tendons.
In July 2010 I suddenly started suffering from debilitating headaches, which were finally diagnosed as Chronic Migraines. So I went from being a very active 29 year old to being barely able to move due to the pain. I lost my job, can't find another because no one's interested as soon as I mention why I left my last one, and I'm in pain on an almost daily basis. But I look OK on the outside so people don't realise.
But all we can do is keep plodding on, take each day as it comes, and do as the vets (as I call the Drs) tell us Chin up, chuck!0 -
I ripped my right quad off at the patella tendon last March, so I do feel for you - I too was getting a lot of knee pain before that and had dropped 6.5st, which made them much better. Pressure off, I gained 3st and then fell, causing the rupture. An op, a 10" scar and 11 months later I walk well but there are some things I may never be able to do again - though losing weight is not one of those. I'm a bit over 4st down since the hospital visit and am now looking for further exercises I can give the knee in the hope of getting more of the full range of activity back. Good luck with any work and the rehab - feel free to add me if you like and think I might be able to help.0
