Canned Pumpkin, Pumkpin Puree...

I read quite a few healthy cooking blogs and I've noticed quite a few of them (the American ones) use canned or pureed pumpkin, especially in low fat dessert recipes.
I've never seen the stuff in the UK, I rarely even see pumpkins in the shops other than at Halloween, and I wondered if anyone knows of anywhere that sells the stuff? I've had a look on Sainsburys, Tescos and Asdas sites, as well as Holland and Barrett, and can't find anything.
Does anyone know where I could get it, or failing that, a substitute that I could use?
Also...I like pumpkin, but what is America's obsession with it?!

You can buy it online at places like American Soda, I think even Amazon have it now but it is quite expensive especially when you add on P&P0

They have the tinned stuff in Waitrose for about £1.40 which is way cheaper than on the internet. In my local store it is in the baking/tinned fruit aisle.0

Ooh great thank you!0

You can also get it at Whole Foods if there's one near you! As an American who moved over here 5 years ago, that store has LOTS of stuff that I've been missing0

You could use mashed/pureed butternut squash aka butternut pumpkin as we call it in Aust! I really miss having real pumpkin to have with roasts and such but for any baked stuff that needs mashed pumpkin I find the squash does just fine.0
